“Why did you do all this for me?’ he asked.’I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.’ ‘You have been my friend,’ replied Charlotte. ‘That in itself is a tremendous thing.’”

People don't change.
During their lives, they come across things that give them motivation to practice more self control or they learn things that assist them in making better decisions, but deep down, they don’t change.
Be careful fighting off monsters, lest ye become one.
Hate
Hate has never shown a single heart true comfort, its appearance only gives an illusion of protection. People are deceived into believing that if you embrace hate and wear its mask it will save you from the things that make you feel fear— it seems like a quick answer to your inner turmoil but it is a path that only leads to greater problems. Thoughts of hate create disharmony and knots of burden in your mind before an action even takes place. When hate grows, the pattern intensifies and fills the mind, pushing you into harmful actions that corrosively ripple outward into the world, leaving you and everyone affected farther away from the safety of inner peace. The way to heal hate is to not ignore it or the tension you experience in your mind. By healing the parts within you that are traumatized and empty you will no longer accept its alluring facade.

“We don’t know who we are, until we’re connected to someone else. We’re just better human beings, when we’re with the person we’re supposed to be with.”
