Thistle: Okay, it looks like we have everything, but…how do we put this thing together?
Group: …
Thistle: Anyone know anything about video editing?
Kika: Nope! Not me! ❌
Ayaki: Me neither.
Thistle: …Yeah, me neither…
Kika: Your dad does that stuff for his work, right?
Thistle: ...He does........
Kika: Then why don't you ask him? That'd be the fastest tutorial that I can think of!
*Later*
Thistle, peeking around a corner as Hidou works on his laptop: ..........Hey, Dad?
Hidou: Yes?
Thistle: How do you edit a video?
Hidou: *stops, then slowly turns his head towards her, confused and mortified*
Thistle: It's not what you're thinking so stop looking at me like that.
Emilia is a vampire, and the self-proclaimed rival of Thistle.
She is conceited and a bit hot-headed, which has gotten her in trouble a few times.
She is a popular actress that worked hard for her fame, and resents Thistle for being a "nepo baby".
She specifically ended up in the entertainment industry by order of her sire, who wanted her to be "useful", and it was the only thing she succeeded in.
She isn't proud of how she managed to rise to fame, and doesn't like to talk about it.
Emilia and Thistle will have a lot of back-and-forth, but Thistle tries to respect her once she realises that Emilia is struggling a lot with her home life.
They eventually form a more friendly rivalry until they become friends, after a series of Plot Things.
She develops a mostly-one-sided crush on Thistle.
.
Hitomi* is a faerie at the moment, but I have yet to finalise her design.
She is cute, confident, and soft-spoken, and is a popular up-and-coming actress due to her personality and looks.
She is very supportive of her co-stars, but can be a little competitive about getting the spotlight.
She fears the future of entertainment as they all reach adulthood, as non-violent and non-sexual media aren't nearly as popular in NnK (headcanon), and she prefers being in and consuming lighter content.
However, cute shows that star minors are popular with other kids and are forgiven by the populace for its lack of adult content (headcanon).
.
Kika is an oni.
She is a multi-talented girl who has tried her hand at several different things to get her foot in the door of the entertainment industry, including dance, acting, podcasting, and modelling.
There aren't a lot of oni in the entertainment industry in NnK (headcanon), nor any demand for them (headcanon), so she's working really hard to make a mark.
She is chipper and optimistic, willing to face any challenge head-on. She also gets excited about things easily.
Due to some of her modelling work, she's acquainted with Benihotaru. She said that he "just came up and spoke to her one day", and they've been in somewhat contact ever since. If she's struggling for work, Beni helps her find something.
.
Ayaki is a demon.
He is a solo idol (sort of a headcanon that a few of those exist in NnK, to go with "entrtainment industry hells") struggling to stay relevant, due to low popularity of idols.
He would be in a group if he could find people to join.
He is fairly quiet and reserved, and will sometimes take acting gigs to stay relevant and generally have work.
He develops a mostly-one-sided crush on Thistle.
He and Thistle fake-date for a while, but they still support each other even after the breakup.
A lot of people say he looks like a "bad boy" and find him appealing for that reason, so he somewhat built up his idol persona on that idea.
.
Eigen is a demon.
He is a model who had very little ties to Benihotaru until Beni saw Eigen and Kika acting together.
Kika recommended him for acting once since they needed another male actor, and Eigen is friendly with her. The two will sometimes get lunches or dinner together.
He is very confident, charming, and tends to be relaxed. He holds little ill will towards others and simply enjoys the work he manages to get.
He has made it into the industry pretty effortlessly, and isn't too worried about securing future work, but is willing to branch out.
You could say that modelling isn't exactly his dream job, but it's something he's good at and "has a face for".
.
They all generally aren't fond of "adult" media, and are connected by their desire to make the "tamer" media more widespread.
As they get older, Hidou doesn't approach them to offer work because they are Thistle's friends, and she detests his work.
He also doesn't approach Thistle, or Syura, about it either because they are his daughters.
Thistle actively tries to keep her father and his name away from her reputation. Her quick rise to fame is due to her excellent acting, some manipulation, and negotiating.
(Headcanon) Many of the newer generations in NnK don't like how the country is and wish for it to change, but are aware that the history and war with KnK is a big part of why things are the way they are.
After the War of Black Rain, since many people are grieving and struggling to deal with the bittersweet end to the long war, there's been a sort of renaissance of desire for non-violent media. Thistle, Emilia, Hitomi*, Kika, Ayaki, and Eigen all make a push for an increase in live shows, podcasts, and media like dramas and rom-coms to help everyone with recovering. (Stuff with gore and sexual content is still made, just much less than before.)
She used to live in an underwater demon world. Under Yagi's command, she's not allowed to return.
She weilds a naginata.
Her older sister was one of the "archdemons" of her own world before she was killed.
Sirena left her home world to hunt down her sister's killers. Some of them were among Yagi's men. She made quite a mess when getting rid of them.
Understanding she sent herself on a suicide mission, she expected to die before she made it home. When Yagi caught her, she told him to rid of her and be done with it, as she had already finished what she had set out to do.
You could say the position she's in is "working off a debt" that she wracked up by the trouble she caused.
Sirena thinks Yagi kept her alive not only because she could be useful, but also because he knows a worse punishment is to force her to live.
It seems like Yagi will sometimes go out of his way to make Sirena's job more miserable.
Her hair was just a bit below her shoulders before she began working under Yagi.
She doesn't like being out of water, as it throws her senses off and it's often too hot, in her opinion.
Due to her home life, she's an excellent swimmer.
When it rains in Ne-no-Kuni, Sirena likes being out in it. Yagi will give her a lot of work on severe weather days out of convenience.
Sirena doesn't understand NnK demons' desire to torture others. In her world, they simply kill anyone that's deemed a problem (with trial, depending on the circumstance).
Sullivan and some others often wonder just what her home world was like exactly, given how strictly militant and brutal she is.
Her main uniform is not the maid outfit, but a suit like the other of Yagi's subordinates are seen wearing.
She's a tomboy, and thinks the maid outfit is humiliating. (Yagi thinks it looks cute, but allowed her to modify it at least.)
She often thinks her coworkers are stupid. Once they all got aquainted with one another though, they all treat each other fairly.
When making comparisons between herself and/or the denizens of her old world and the denizens of Ne-no-Kuni, she will sometimes refer to NnK residents as "Land-Dwellers".
Yagi tends to keep her close in case she becomes a loose-canon.
Though Sirena shows loyalty to NnK, she isn't happy about it.
Sirena doesn't necessarily care to return home because there's "nothing left for [her] there". However, she still prefers it since it's familiar and comfortable to her.
She doesn't disobey Yagi because she has a good work ethic, and has accepted that her life is in his hands now. She wouldn't try to kill him because she knows she can't.
If Sirena wanted to get away, she would simply run away. But she doesn't, because she has nowhere she wants to go.
I imagine Hidou could handle the kids when they were babies, since he could just "idc" his way through it and make Linaria take care of them when he didn't want to.
However, when they got old enough to independently run up and bother dad, he started struggling to deal with them, to the point where he was borderline regretting having a family. He wanted to make and edit his videos, and spend time with Linaria, and these two rugrats (primarily Syura) kept getting in the way of that. A lot.
He didn't often lash out at them, but he harbored a strong, silent resentment. Syura didn't exactly understand, but Thistle fostered a mutual feeling towards him, and spent a lot of time distracting her sister so they could both be away from him.
Syura caused a few problems here and there with fights and whatnot, but Thistle was really the one to take out her aggression on others, though never unprompted. It was when she was middle school-aged that Hidou sat her down and they had a long talk about things, concluding with the idea that they'd agree to be more open with one another and stop the tension that was slowly cleaving them apart.
Other random things I've thought about with them:
Syura stays childlike as she grows up, and is pretty oblivious to a lot of things. That's not to say she's stupid though, or that she misses everything.
Thistle becomes an actress in high school, and Hidou acts as her agent since she's a minor.
When Thistle introduces herself to people in the industry, they worryingly ask if Hidou is "working with minors now", to which she responds that this arrangement is because he's her dad.
Despite the lawlessness of NnK, they do have rules in place to protect the children. Though, some people can be lax about them with teenagers (encouraging them to smoke/drink, for example).
Linaria has noted that Hidou and Thistle are both extremely intelligent, and both act on their own and hide a lot more than they let on. No one in the family has ever successfully lied to Hidou. He always sees through it.
Thistle tends to only lie to her father when she's trying to not make him worry about something. Sometimes he won't call her out on it because he understands this.
Syura and Thistle didn't get their phones until around high school. Since Thistle always seems to be doing her own thing, Hidou set hers up to where he could hack into it if something ever went wrong. He truthfully never invaded her privacy until the day she almost died, and in doing so, he was able to save her life.
When Thistle had woken up in the hospital, it was the first time Hidou ever raised a hand against either of his children. Syura felt bad for Thistle, but Thistle told her that she "had that coming for a long time", and that it likely didn't hurt as much as the moment Hidou thought she had died.
Linaria spoke with Thistle afterwards, holding back her own anger since Hidou already read her the riot act and then some. She tried to reassure Thistle that Hidou cared about her, and was mostly angry with himself about the things he didn't do that may have led to this moment, but Thistle responds that she can tell all of that.
Hidou never apologized for hitting her, and Thistle never asked for an apology.
Everyone comments about how much Thistle reminds them of Hidou and she hates it.
It was Hidou's idea to get Thistle glasses that matched his when she started losing her vision when she was little. However, as she got older, he offered to let her change them up, but she declined. If Syura is with her when she tells the former story to people, Syura will call her out on the fact that Thistle chose to keep the same frames.
Thistle often insults her father and calls him things like "degenerate". He usually brushes it off unless he's in a bad mood.
Unlike how Syura calls their parents "Papa" and "Mama", Thistle politely uses "Dad" and "Mom". She also tends to refer to Syura simply as "Sis".
Syura is the shortest one in the family, and Thistle is taller than Linaria.
Syura doesn't tend to take responsibility with things (like household chores), but will readily join in if she sees Linaria and Thistle doing them together.
Syura and Thistle are banned from Hidou's lab, but Thistle tends to go in there anyways to help Linaria clean. They've all had quite a few arguments about this. Hidou didn't enforce it as much once they became adults though.
Hidou never did and never will bring up the idea to his daughters that they could be in his av films. Someone asked Thistle once if he ever pitched this idea, to which she responded, "Well, we are his kids. He has a limit, believe it or not."
When Syura and Thistle are talking with all the other archdemons' kids one day, the group will turn to Jork, and Thistle will comment how he's the only "normal one" amongst them.
Syura gets excited to see Thistle appear in shows and movies, but Thistle's first few gigs caught her off guard because she acts cheerful in them, unlike how Thistle tends to be very calm and aloof.
I like to think that Hidou taught Syura biology with hands-on teaching, but never encouraged her to join his work as an assistant. Instead, she may work as an apprentice for someone else, potentially in Lec's hospital.
Hidou taught both the girls how to fight properly, but they both actually use their magic differently. Thistle uses her magic more similarly to Hidou's, but Syura is much more creative with hers.
Thistle admires Roc's fighting style, and likes to watch him in combat.
Where the wind sweeps down in a land up high
And the rainbows coat the sea
Where the meadows bloom ‘neath the clear blue sky
Let this paradise set you free
Carry on, oh swords of the fumes of death
Tarry and you’ll face His ire
But a featherless wing, and lung with no breath,
Will have you left on the wire
Where the wind sweeps down in a land up high
And the rainbows coat the sea
Where the meadows bloom ‘neath the clear blue sky
In a paradise where we bleed
There’s no time to think of the guys and girls
Study demonology!
You’ll think twice what you say when your bone unfurls
And your tongue falls to your knees
Oh, where the wind sweeps down in a land up high
And the rainbows coat the sea
Where the meadows bloom ‘neath the clear blue sky
In this paradise chaining thee
Wear the right skirt and gotta brush my hair
Ready for a show today~
As the dust settles on the page’s wear
And the garden Glories sway
Oh, where the wind sweeps down in a land up high
And the rainbows coat the sea
Where the meadows bloom ‘neath the clear blue sky
In a paradise He decrees
Where the sinless roam and the innocent play
The shadows appear to hide
And the strongest lead to blot out the grey
Follow His light as our guide
Oh, where the wind sweeps down in a land up high
And the rainbows coat the sea
Where the meadows bloom ‘neath the clear blue sky
In this paradise we can’t flee
Merciless towards even the cutest face
To uphold the prettiest lies
There’s no cure yet for those who become disgraced
So the tainted shall kneel or die
Oh, where the wind sweeps down in a land up high
And the rainbows coat the sea
Where the meadows bloom ‘neath the clear blue sky
In a paradise, we concede
[Cryptically slow]
Where the weak ‘re struck down and the screams ring high
And the smoke meets the light at sea
Where the bloodstains bloom with the fear in their eyes
In this paradise just for me.
When Yagi stepped through the massive wooden door, grunting and the jingling of plastic greeted him from inside. Down the long hall, he found his cartilaginous wife furiously fiddling with a tangled ball of Christmas lights. A ladder had been erected by a fir tree that towered over them both, and ornaments and strands of garland were laid about the room carefully for easy viewing.
“Hey,” he called out. “Take it easy. We’re going to wait for Jork to decorate, right?”
She sighed, continuing to claw the strand apart. “I know…but I want everything to be ready when he gets here.”
“You’ve done enough. Take a break and we can untangle it when he gets here.” He moved over to a clear tank filled with water nearby.
An infant within the water, bearing a pair of horns and moving with a fish’s tail, beamed and reached out when it saw Yagi approaching.
With his sleeve rolled up, he dipped a hand into the water and caressed its head. “I’m home, Guppy.”
The infant giggled delightedly.
“Ow ow ow—have you fed him yet?”
“Not yet. Is he hungry?”
“Hungry or vengeful.” He flicked the water from his hand and dried it on a towel close by. The small wounds soon after repaired themselves seamlessly.
“I’ll take care of it as soon as I figure this out.”
“I’m sure Jork will understand just this once that you only made above-average preparations this time.”
She huffed. “It would help if we weren’t always running behind on things like this.”
“Well, it wasn’t only my fault this time,” he said, sauntering close with a smirk. “We may even need a new tank.”
She returned the look with a roll of her eyes and gently whacked him with her tail.
“Hand it over. I’ll give it a shot.”
“Alright.” With the knot finally out of her hands, she collapsed onto the sofa. “I told you not to wind it like that.”
“Yes, I remember.”
Giving a chuckle, she hopped up and fetched a sardine from the kitchen. Dangling it over the water until she got the baby’s attention, she smiled back and dropped it in, watching and cooing as it was rapidly shredded with tiny, sharp teeth.
Observing them, the archdemon commented, “Sometimes I forget you have sharp teeth.”
“Oh yeah?” She flashed a shark's grin.
“Up until each time I get a rather dangerous reminder."
“How about I give you another one after the tree is decorated? I’m a little hungry too~”
He laughed nervously. “How about a smooth and painless one instead?”
“Nope. Take it or leave it.”
An uneasy laugh rolled from his lips. “...We’ll see.”
She chuckled.
Soon after, the front door swung open again. “I’m hoooooome.” Jork trudged inside just as his father feverishly undid the knot holding the ball of string lights together. His steps halted abruptly. “We told you not to wind it like that.”
“But it's undone now.”
He shook his head with a smile, jogged to the tank, and placed both palms on it. “Hey, buddy!”
The baby gleefully imitated the gesture.
As Sirena stood to help with the lights, Jork stuck his fingertips in the water. “Agh! Did you just feed him? He’s kinda nibbly.”
“Yes, I did. Be careful not to dangle your fingers over him.”
“Got it.”
After the two adults got the bottom lights strung, Sirena put on a firm hat, neatly rolled the remainder of lights onto her arm, and placed the roll around her single, fin-like horn for Yagi to pull from as he made his way up.
Meanwhile, Jork joined her to start the garland on the base of the tree. “Hey, Sirena?”
“Yes?”
“Can we make this a family tradition?”
His two parents stopped to watch him, surprise filling their features. They traded a glance before she responded, “Of course we can.”
“Can he help too?” A thumb jammed towards the baby.
“If you can hold him without him slipping out again.”
He dashed back to the tank. “I won’t let him slip again, promise!”
Yagi and Sirena smiled as Jork put on a special pair of gloves and carefully lifted the baby from the water, applied a towel, then taught how to hang a piece of the tinsel that sparkled in its awestruck eyes.
