Yet another new study debunked the basis for the anti-trans sports bans. It was never about sports but for creating legal avenues for exclusion and abjection. This is one of the largest analyses ever conducted, involving 52 studies and 6,485 trans people. Read the study here.
post so nice had to reblog it twice and force it down everyone's throats
At minimum about 4.5 thousand people liked this without reblogging it.
We gotta fix that.
Progress.
Onwards!
I can't access the full paper, but their conclusion is right there in the abstract:
While transgender women exhibited higher lean mass than cisgender women, their physical fitness was comparable. Current evidence is mostly low certainty and has heterogenous quality but does not support theories of inherent athletic advantages for transgender women over cisgender.
@rubybweek day 3: Unusual Fiction
Well. So there's Gritty fanfic. Obviously.
Makes the Dream Work by cooltapes on Ao3 (no tumblr linked)
Claude Giroux keeps finding himself locked in a closet with various opponents. Not by accident. Gritty, the mascot of the Philadelphia Flyers (noted orange monster), has decided that this will get him to do something. What? Who knows! Not Claude; not even Annie, the scary, over-stressed mascot handler; and certainly not Sidney Crosby, the other first victim.
Featuring a cast of top-ranked hockey guys, Gritty, the aforementioned Annie, and eventually a golden retriever, this is an extremely funny, quite sweary hockey RPF(...ish). The worldbuilding around mascots as spontaneously-manifesting monsters - definitely not humans in a funny suit - is very entertaining and it's a nice touch that non-verbal Gritty uses a speech board when he chooses to communicate in English.
Please note that part of this fic takes place during the 2020 lockdowns. No shipping besides Claude/his actual real-life wife, though Gritty does have a crush.
Happy Day Three!
stores in the original fiction tag; stories that rely on a canon that isn’t firm such as mythology, Goncherov, Humans are Space Orcs, or Athropomorfic; stories that make you go “Huh? Huh!”
Who has some unusual fics to share?
@rubybweek Day 2: Time Travel
A fic from 2021 for a show (due South) that aired 1994-1999.
Where the Heart Is by @desireearmfeldt
Major Character Death! Angst! Post-canon, RayK finds himself talking to Stella again. Only problem is, neither of them want him to be. The other problem is, he's dead. Last thing he knew, he was on the Quest with Ben.
Not a long story, but one that packs a kick.

trying my best to participate in @rubybweek, in honor of @rubynye. so here's my go for day 1: overlooked gems. stories with less than 100 kudos, let's go.
five overlooked gems from The Old Guard fandom, specifically Book of Nile fic, my beloved fandom corner:
065. Down by @aimmyarrowshigh - a drabble, nile's perspective on loving booker. drabbles are hard to write, and aimmyarrowshigh is great at them. this is an especially emotional morsel of love that hides history, pain, and perseverance.
she told me to come (but i was already there) by okapi - a fun little PWP, nile and booker getting up to some sexy roleplay. may the force be in you 🫳
No strings attached by @immortal-family - i love a story where things are unstated, where there's mystery and you're invited to wonder about the characters' history, present, and future, and this is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Ballroom of Romance by @winterequinoxx - a historical AU, and one of my favorite historical settings, the american west some time in the 19th century. nile and booker have been moving toward each other, but we're spared all the delicious slow burn torture and invited into the magical night everything changes for them
They Call Me the Wanderer by @sholeh675 - some pre-relationship road trip loveliness. nile and booker break down in arizona, nile has some thoughts, and booker has some support
this was harder than i thought it'd be, i don't mean to brag but my comments are scattered goddamn everywhere in BoN ao3 land. don't they know i have a challenge to do?
@rubybweek! Day 1: Overlooked Gems
For Deadloch, which has fewer than 100 works on Ao3, a selection of post s.1 fics that I highly recommend.
The difference is kissing somebody you actually like by @scribblilenore Post s.1, Abby is the current Person In Charge at Deadloch PD and there's a graffiti artist on the loose who is making Aleyna very unhappy. Abby's doing her best but also there's Kate, who makes yummy noises when Abby brings her pastries, and is actually interested in the things she has to say, and it is surely only professional colleague behavior that means that Abby wants to spend time with her. Very cute Abby/Kate fic. This is...very probably what the inside of Abby's head feels like all the time.
whatever we deny or embrace (for worse or for better) by @starsandatoms Dulcie, Cath, and Eddie attend the next Winter Feastival together. There are no murders! Eddie is a terror! Background Kate/Abby, Amanda Palmer, and adorabilities from Abby and Sven. Tammy's Welcome to Country is perfect.
The Mysterious Case of the Gutter Potato by @bellaswans-khakiskirt It's Eddie's last day in Deadloch, so she's got just enough time to help solve the mystery of the potato plant growing in Mary Odiley's raingutter! Does she want to? No, absolutely not. Tammy and Miranda do their best to help a young bird. Wonderful dork-ass (but good-hearted) teen characterization.
iodine by @halfeatenmoon Oh, Abby... She grew up in Deadloch. She was best friends with Sharelle. She met Sgt. Collins and started believing that she could make things better. This is a really, really wonderful look at Abby's character pre-canon. She's trying so hard to help.

Happy Bwee!k! Go forth and celebrate your communities the way our friend Ny would have: joyously, fearlessly, and with as much love as you have in your heart. Today we’re looking for Overlooked Gens. What are you commenting on?
Day Three: Unusual Fiction - June 3, 2026
stores in the original fiction tag; stories that rely on a canon that isn’t firm such as mythology, Goncherov, Humans are Space Orcs, or Athropomorfic; stories that make you go “Huh? Huh!”
Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations
Ny wrote so much, and she wrote so many different things. I mentioned in Day 2 that she has 124 fandoms tagged on AO3, and a number of them are Original Fiction, fairy tales, myths and legends. She loved stories that could surprise her, and she loved those weird moments when people came together to make a new canon out of nowhere.
So your mission for day three is to find a canon that isn’t set in stone. Mythologies are a great start- if you want to honor Ny, we all know how much she loved the Minoans, but anything passed down as oral history would do. Anything that varies from place to place or person to person.
Folktales are good for this. And one of the things I think Ny took glee in was the way that sometimes a community comes together to just…make up a story together. Things like Goncharov, Humans Are Space Orcs, or Anthropomorfic.
Ny also loved a story twist. Something that surprised a reader as voracious as Ny is rare and wonderful, and she took joy in it. Look for fics told in unusual ways - interactive fiction, original comics, games, other unusual and wonderful ways that people have interacted with their favorite canons.
So, since I always end these with a question or six: what's your favorite mythology? What kind of unusual formats or conceits do you like? And do you have a link or two to share?

friends, boys, girls, both and neither, we are ONE WEEK out from the celebration of our friend Rubynye!
Have you chosen your stories to comment on? Are you thinking about what you want to say?
Remember, we are looking to spread joy, and channel Ruby's effervescent spirit. Looking forward to joining you all in this!
I don't wanna be insensitive but who is updating her tumblr blog?
An understandable thing to be confused about, I've seen a few people have this question.
No one is updating the rubynye tumblr.
Ny used a queue on her tumblr, which allows you to put posts in a buffer to post later. You can see roughly when she put something in her queue by clicking the three dots on the line next to her name and clicking "view prior reblog" to see when it was posted.
In the case of the post above, which posted 47 minutes ago, the person she reblogged from posted it Feb 18. We don't know how much she had in her queue, but it will likely run out in a month or so.
I hope this helps!
Day Two: Time Travel - June 2, 2026
fandoms that finished being produced/aired/published >5 years ago; stories older than 3 years; stories from a fandom you used to be in
Ny was active in fandom for more than 30 years. I don’t know how to count them, exactly, but I know she was on Usenet in the 90s, writing stories and filk and everything else her beautiful mind could come up with.
You can go and see her 700 or so fics on AO3, dating back to 2003. All along, she was writing Batfamily. It was evergreen to her, and I think that’s beautiful.
So in part, this theme day is to celebrate her long contribution to 124(!) different tagged fandoms on AO3. And to do that, I thought it would be fitting to do some archaeology.
Fandom moves fast these days. A show drops and people binge it, people write, people move on. It’s not like it was, when we got 26-episode shows that dropped weekly. When we had time between episodes to speculate and write and think and plan. With a season that took half a year to watch (and would be back in another half a year) there was a through-line that kept fandoms going.
And without that time to grow and know each other, with a culture of drive-by posting, we’ve lost some community.
So for Tuesday, let’s go back in time: go visit your first fandom and read as something that someone posted last week. Go look at the first fics that were posted to AO3, in the order they were posted, and find something there.
Or, just look for a show from your youth, or your college years, or your early 40s - wherever you were 5 years ago or more - and see what people have done with it. (What shows ended in the 2020-2021 season? Glad you asked! What movies came out in 2021? I got you! What book series were published that year? Great question!)
Sound off in the comments: What fandom are you looking to go back to? Is there an older story you think people should read? Do you have tips and tricks for filtering archives? Speak up!
If you were friends with @rubynye also known as minoanmiss in other forums, I am collecting photos of her and if art or care packages she sent out as part of a memorial slide show. I sincerely hope this is not how you're finding out.
Please feel free to DM me if you have any photos for this purpose.
If anyone who loved Ny has anything they’d like included in a memorial slideshow, please contact Merav!
Without any set schedule, I want to talk about each of the theme days, why I chose them, and what they had to do with the woman we knew as @rubynye .
Day One: Overlooked Gems - June 1, 2026
stories with no comments; stores with less than 100 kudos; stories in fandoms with less than 1000 fics, stories about a main character or pairing that makes up less than 5% of a fandom’s output
One of the things I always admired about Ruby was her ability to find something to praise in stories I might not think were very good. While I might click away or not finish them, Ruby understood that a new artist of any kind is someone who needs to be nurtured.
We all know why a story might not have a high comment or kudo count. But that story, Ruby knew, was still written by a person. And when she would reach into her giant heart and give that person praise, she was building her community just a little larger. Maybe that person would get her comment and write again, and again, and hone their muscle. Maybe they’d become great, or maybe they would just find a fun hobby they enjoyed. Either way, Ruby could be part of that growth. And how many of us were encouraged by her along the way? How many of us improved because she believed in us?
She also was a voracious reader and a member of a truly shocking number of fandoms in her life. So shining a light on smaller fandoms seems to be appropriate. Who knows, maybe if you go and read something in a fandom you’ve never seen before, you might end up enjoying it and staying?
And finally, rarepairs and underserved characters. We’ve all been in fandom, we know what characters and pairings are likely to be underserved. Characters of color. F/F ships. PolyShips in all their forms and configurations. All things that Ruby appreciated and all things that represent parts of who she was, as a poly, queer woman of color. I know she always wanted to see more love for characters who looked like her.
Ruby was also what the kids today would call a proshipper, a believer in IDIC and YKINMKATO. She loved to see people exploring the canon and the characters, and took great joy in reading something new and unexpected. She was overjoyed to see rarepairs in her fandoms, and I wanted to celebrate that part of her.
If you have any ideas for fandoms, pairings, or specific fics that will meet the brief, feel free to drop them in the comments! Help people find things you love!
As a reminder, there are no police of this week. No one is going to tell you that you did a bad job because a ship wasn’t rare enough or a story low comment enough. The point is positivity and community. The prompts are guidelines, you won’t be punished for not doing something perfectly.
