Since many of you enjoyed my work on Danaë, I decided to write a few more ballads about Perseus (and I'm especially delighted with @katerinaaqu and his very detailed analysis of my first big poem). A characteristic of medieval Castilian "romanceros" is that they "enter suddenly and exit quickly," generally beginning in medias res and ending before the climax or summarizing it rapidly in a series of verses. It's a very interesting narrative structure, which allows for telling stories with a different rhythm.
The Sun fled in terror.
The stars did not dare
to shine. Gloom rules.
Night scorns the Day
where the world finds its end
and its edges meet.
Perseus now faced
the dark cave's threshold.
His hair starts to bristle;
his eyes start to hide;
his feet rooted to earth;
his arms heavy, falling
stripped of strength, while
his soul begs to flee.
Around him, mourning, howl
silent, screaming statues
with faces dead of Horror—
Horror, not living stone!
Athena knew the trance
that seized his mind.
Down from the high sphere
with her divine word,
she pressed lips to his ear;
her voice swayed, and said:
"What holds you, little brother?
What stops you, beloved hero,
now, when to the very edge
of the possible you have come?
Yours is the helm that shadows
the grim face of Thanatos.

At this, there breaks in
an obsidian melody,
with siren promises
amid hisses of a viper:

His soul no longer shrank back.
Gaze shining, he advances
toward the cursed darkness.
His right hand gripped the blade.

It was very difficult to be satisfied with the English translation because I tried to take advantage of the Spanish in the composition of this poem, making use of its roots and variations. The more poems I compose, the more I realize how fascinating the versatility of Spanish is. A single idea or thought can be expressed in dozens of different words; Spanish is extremely rich in synonyms and long syllables that captivate you the more you practice it in poetry. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Como ha muchos les gustó mi trabajo de Dánae, se me ocurrió hacer otros cuantos romances respecto a Perseo. Una característica de los romanceros castellanos medievales es que "entran de repente y salen rápido", generalmente enpezando in media res y terminando antes del clímax o resumiendolo rápidamente en una tirada de versos. Es un esquema narrativo muy interesante, lo que da oportunidad de contar historias con un ritmo diferente.
Ya el Sol huía espantado.
Los astros no se atrevían
a brillar. Penumbra impera.
Noche que desprecia el Día
donde halla el mundo su término
y sus extremos se unían,
Perseo ya se encaraba
a umbral de cueva sombría.
Vanse a encrespar sus cabellos;
vanse a esconder sus pupilas;
sus pies a tierra enraizados;
sus brazos pesan, caían
pobres de fuerzas, al tiempo
que el alma ruega a la huida.
Al redor, en luto, aúllan
en silencio, estatuas gritan
con sus rostros, de Horror muertos—
¡Horror, que no piedra viva!—.
Supo Atenea del trance

En mirando esto, interrumpe
obsidiana melodía,

Ya no aguardó sus palabras.
Ya su alma no le rehuía.
Brillando su vista, avanza
hacia oscuridad maldita.

Su izquierda escudo embrazaba.
Su pie calzó alas de brisa.
Porta el Valor en su pecho
y en su hombro Sabiduría.
Con furias de cielo y tierra
diosa y héroe respondían:
"Mira, soy cuanto has rehusado:

Fue muy díficil estar satisfecho con la traducción en inglés porque intenté aprovechar el español en la composición de este poema, aprovechando las raíces y variantes. Entre más poemas compongo me doy cuenta de lo fascinante que es la versatilidad del castellano. Una sola idea o pensamiento se puede expresarse en decenas de palabras distintas, el español es extremadamente rico en sinónimos y sílabas largas que te cautiva cuánto más lo practicas en la poesía. Espero que disfruten tanto como yo disfruté escribirlo.

Um... sorry about that. There have been some administrative changes, I've had a backlog of patients at my office, and I've had to take half a million reports home. I've been more grumpy than usual, and I'm recovering from a mini gastroenteritis outbreak (at least it was two days off, if being bedridden counts as a day off 😑).
Anyway, at least since Saturday I've been able to polish a little lyrical piece. I hope you like it. In Castilian metrics, this is a stanza called a "Lira" and is one of the most elegant, used especially by Fray Luis de León during the Spanish Golden Age. It is composed of heptasyllabic and hendecasyllabic lines with consonant rhymes 7A 11B 7A 7B 11B (my condolences to English speakers; it's such a delicate type of stanza that it even pained me to translate it into free verse 😭 but I couldn't think of how to adapt it to English metrics. If anyone has suggestions, please share them; I always love exploring new types of meters.)

Emm... lo siento por eso. Ha habido algunos cambios administrativos, se me han acumulado pacientes en mi consultorio y he tenido que llevarme medio millón de reportes a casa. Lo he pasado más malhumorado que de costumbre y me estoy recuperando de una mini epidemia de gastroenteritis (al menos fueron dos días libres, si quedar postrado en cama cuenta como día libre 😑).
En fin, al menos desde el sábado he podido pulir un pequeño trabajito lírico. Espero les guste. En métrica castellana, esta es una estrofa llamada "Lira" y es una de las más elegantes, utilizada sobre todo por Fray Luis de León en el siglo de Oro español, se compone de heptasílabos y endecasílabos con rimas consonantes 7A 11B 7A 7B 11B (mis condolencias para los angloparlantes, es un tipo de estrofa tan delicada que hasta me dolió traducirla al verso libre 😭 pero no sé me ocurría como adaptarla a la métrica inglesa, si alguien tiene sugerencias, por favor, siempre me encanta explorar nuevos tipos de metros).
