Just had a fic idea, or rewrite I guess? Doesn't matter, just imagine in season 1 before Will was kidnapped he had an imaginary friend named Henry and at first it seems like useless info, Joyce saying Will's always been imaginative and this friend has been around since BEFORE Mike.
It doesn't seem relevant — until season 2, the Mind Flayer. Will being off putting and he says he trusts the MF because he knows Henry, his friend. They go through everything but at the end Will says that the MF didn't know Henry, the MF was lying or whatever. But that's false.
Season 3 is the same, no Henry mentioned this time and it seems like it was just the MF screwing with him or it really was a made up friend.
Then season 4 comes and they meet Vecna and everyone assumes this is the new bad, when suddenly we hear Henry, just a little garbled but we don't see him. We meet him in Will's dream, he's telling Will about the 'Shadow Monster' his friends being in danger, just to lure him back in Hawkins.
It works, Will was already going back.
We only see Henry when One is talking to Jane in the lab, it cuts back and forth between him, Vecna talking to Nancy or Max, then Henry who is slowly possessing Will.
Season 5 Will doesn't mention Henry, he can't. Will gets Vecna'd in his sleep, just without the floating. Through S5 we learn more about him, and the fact that he chose Will because of Joyce's play, he chose to enter Joyce's mind and ended up leaving his own DNA in there that didn't take until Will was born, causing Will to have 'innate' powers without ever realizing it.
Henry let Will to access them, he couldn't before because Henry made sure Will wouldn't ever be able to unless he allowed it.
I don't have much more on this, if enough people like it them maybe I'll write something for it or expand on this. This was just something that popped into my head late at night.
