Looking for resources / thoughts on queer space
Hey Tumblr! We're Rumours and we're a collective that throws quarterly queer dance parties in Pittsburgh, PA (our whole deal 'n' spiel is at the bottom of this post). We threw a dance party this weekend and, besides being hella fun, lots of questions around holding public space for queer people came up for us and our party-goers: in very few words, how do you make it clear to folks who do not identify as - or sense a belonging to - queer/lgbtqtsua/non-cis/etc that they are entering a space that is created for and by the people who *do* belong to those communities? Some of this discussion is happening on social media, and we're doing a lot of thinking / talking / processing amongst ourselves too. We're looking for resources like essays, zines, threads, blogs, and even individual input on the following:
Is it possible to "keep" a space queer? Who else has tried? What defines success in that situation?
gender policing, "passing", perception, and making assumptions about people and their sex/gender/sexuality in queer spaces. Also, gender policing. Also, let's talk about gender policing plz
queer sanctuary. Can such a thing exist in a public space?
queer space, and the possibility of having one in venues where people are drinking and the possibility / inevitability of disruption, and how to deal with that disruption through communication
what constitutes disrespectful behavior by folks who do not identify as part of those communities, but feel entitled to the space, or are there to consume and be entertained?
"queer", privilege", "safe space", "allyship" and other concepts that might not get through to people right away, or may be considered proprietary to a group, or too academic for some.Â

Rumours is a space for queers by queers.  We hope this party will become another space for all you Steel City queer folks and loved ones to celebrate â and dance your pants off â in safety.  We also recognize that safer spaces are defined differently for everyone.  We seek to create an environment of excitement, creativity, and respect.  No queerphobic, transphobic, racist, disrespectful, and/or otherwise hateful behavior will be tolerated.  Practice Positive Consent. We welcome feedback as we strive to make folks feel welcome.Â
We hope to host this event quarterly. For our first party, we welcome three local djs to spin with us. At upcoming parties we look forward to booking more Pittsburgh folks and some people from out of town.  Let us know if you have ideas for djs!Â
