Stylized Cat Concepts - Part 1
The idea of Furistas Cat Cafe began sometime towards the end of 2016. It was a quick prototype project that went for 2 weeks. In that time, we were looking more closely to the game play rather than the art style, but that’s when it triggered us to think about designing a memorable cat design.
Our first cat design was a very simple and some what slim compared to what we have now!
The fun in those quick prototype games are that you have to throw out perfectionism out the window and just make stuff! Can be a little stressful but the results are usually quite funny when a lot of things break.
After a while from the 2 weeks project, the game idea was confirmed and we started to think about the cat designs more. There were few points that we wanted to make sure we get it right. 1.Creating a design that is different from other cat games. (In 2017, it felt like cat games were popping up in the market every time we blinked) 2.We still want to be cohesive with other Runaway animals. 3.The cats will need to be more chubbier. For extra cuteness.
We couldn’t quite compare these cat designs to many of the animals Runaway has designed previously, just because most of them being butterflies, birds, fish, and nothing really fluffy, but our go to solution was to add some sparkles in their eyes.
Of course, sparkly eyes aren’t going to suddenly solve all the design problems, but considering things like character scales for mobile gaming, and expressions based on other Runaway animals have definitely shaped what the cats look like now. And let’s not forget about the extra chubbiness. So this was the starting point for cat design in Furistas. From here involves some research into cat behaviours, individual personalities and etc etc... which is a topic we’d like to share with you next time. :) Until then, hope you guys are all enjoying the new mini games! There’s more things coming soon! ~(=^・ω・^)ノ☆
Hi guys! It has been about a month since Furistas Cat Cafe has launched globally, and we want to say a big thank you all for playing our game. :)
Ever since the project started, we were itching to share all the bits and bobs about Furistas. It's so nice being able to talk about it openly now! Cannot wait to share more of behind the scenes stuff on this blog again!
Here's our very first concept art we made to share the vision within the production team.
This piece helped us figure out the art direction of the game, feel of the game, and maybe a little bit of game play style. We really wanted to focus on the warm and wholesome feeling. We tried to imagine what kind of cafe do we want to be in to relax, and what kind of quirky things can we put in for a little fun... Of course, everyone has different ideas of what’s relaxing or what’s cool, so this is like our base atmosphere we aimed for. Slowly but surely we will be adding more contents to the game, which will give options to players how they want to design their cafe. :)
The only thing that probably changed from this art to final production would be art rendering style of everything, haha. But that is another story to share for another day! Next time we’d like to show you how we designed our kitties in the game! See you then, and enjoy our game as much as we do ❤ /ᐠ。ꞈ。ᐟ\ - Lilian
So many comfortable chairs and these people prefer the floor 😂 I love that game anyway 😍
Your cafe looks so pretty!
We have been SO blown away by how many entries we have had to our “Make your cat a video game celebrity” competition! 🐱
So much so, that as well as having the cat with the most votes, we have decided to also have TWO wild card winners where the team behind Furistas Cat Cafe will choose their favourite cats to appear in game.
So what are you waiting for? Enter here!
Well ok this is gonna be an edgy cat right?
Oh well this cat looks like it’s going through some shit…
Introducing Mike! The newest addition to the art team!
Mike was actually our FIRST EVER intern back in 2013 when we were developing ‘Flutter: Butterfly Sanctuary’. During that time we were asked to help out with some 2D animations for a kids TV show that was produced by a different department in the same building as us and after the internship Mike was offered full time work as an animator for that show! So we have known him for a really long time and we’ve always had a secret wish that Mike would one day come and work with us! A few months back our wish came true and Mike joined the runway art team full time!
Mike is real wholesome an talented. I asked him to send me a selfie he’s drawn and he gave me 3 options. They where all so good I decided to use them all!
It always felt to us that Mike really belonged with Runaway, so we’re more than happy that after 5 years the true destiny is fulfilled! Welcome to the team! ❤️
You can follow Mike on Instagram !!!
made an insta for flutter butterfly sanctuary & starlight :) https://www.instagram.com/flutterpedia/
Some pretty moths~ moths are so underrated, they’re like butterflies of the night with lil’ fur coats to keep them warm. 😌💓
💯 Agree! We love these! 💗

((I had planned to fuse them, but they go everywhere together and the muse is concerned it would be traumatic for them to consume one another. :|a))
Can totally relate to this! 💗

Hey guys! I’ve been learning to use instagram more these days, with appreciation of creative projects people do. I came across amazing craftsman, and I just have to share this with you all! This instagram account, @make_moths, creates embroidered moths! It’s so delicately done, and sooo cute! But it caught my eyes that these aren’t the only thing this guy makes!
He paints really playfully cute moths and caterpillars!! I do admit that I’m not quite into real life moths and caterpillars (or just any bugs in general), but these I have no problem loving! <3
Who could not enjoy this lovely fluffy drawing of a cat and a moth? Such a good combination too! ;D
This guy is just so talented. He even made himself a moth mask (and that caterpillar plushie!). You can just feel his love for moth and caterpillars from all of his works and I appreciate it so much when an artist/craftsman is so passionate about something they love. It’s in Japanese, but he also has a twitter account (@gauri_kiroku) where he takes photos of moths and caterpillars that he encounters in real life. It’s so cute because he compliments every one of them he meets. Even my feelings towards bugs are changing after seeing his accounts. Both his accounts are worth checking, but it was so nice just to even see where his inspirations come from for his craft works. If anyone knows people like this guy who has obsession on something and makes interesting stuff, let us know! -Lilian
Have you ever wondered what the Art team at Runaway looks like? Like all of us together?...yeah me too! Haha Funnily enough, I have yet to meet IRL the RAT team, I’m pretty sure I’ll have a mini heart attack when that happens because it will be epic! Most of us are based in New Zealand as you probably already know. Some are in Wellington and others in Dunedin, and I am in London. >_< lol Despite the distance, I feel super attached to this awesome crew! This is by far the best Art Team EVER!! A bunch of good kiddos and extremely talented too, which makes working with them a journey of perpetual growth as an artist! Anyway mini love rant over, so here's to the RATS! <3 <3
From Top Left to Bottom Right. Emma, Lars, (me), Lilian, Bridget & Carla!
