The way that the fine strands of a Panama Hat flirt with the coarse jute rope of a Spanish espadrille is indeed a craftgasm, culturegasm and stylegasm. They collide like two lovers on a quest that dates back 4,000 years.
The art of weaving the Sombrero de Paja (straw hat) dates back to the 18th century in Piura, Peru. Over time, cultural exchange led to the straw hat becoming a wardrobe staple in Spain. By the early 20th century, Catacaos had become the main commercial port for the Peruvian sombrero, which passed through the Panama Canal before arriving to America. But it wasn't until Teddy Roosevelt wore this classic accessory that it became widely known as a summer wardrobe staple. As popularity grew, it became customary to refer to the Sombrero de Paja as "The Panama Hat." Now that it's experiencing a particularly healthy revival, we feel we must set the record straight! The Panama Hat hails from the Andes - Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. If it's not woven 100% from toquilla straw, native to this region, then sadly, you've found yourself a fake!
A Spanish craft tradition, the espadrille has been around for centuries. This light sandal, made with jute rope is traditionally paired with linen fabric. While many look-a-likes exist, authentic espadrilles are famously made in La Rioja. They enthralled the masses when Valentino put them on the runway, but these classic beauties first dressed Catalan military soldiers in the 13th century.
The Panama Hat is made from toquilla straw, which is derived from a palm-like plant native to the Andean Region. When dried and cleaned, it is separated into strands and woven by hand. Depending on the fineness of the strand used, a hat can take 7 to 30 days to weave, which determines the quality and durability.
