Friendly reminder to always choose love. Love is the strongest choice. I was told that back when I did a #Shakespeare workshop in 2013, only a dozen or so weeks after the biggest plot turn of my life happened. It's become my mantra. For those who knew me back in my student days, I was burning the candle 🕯 at both ends. In April 2013, it escalated to an all time low when I fell down a flight of stairs in stiletto heels 👠 trying to get to the subway in NYC 🗽 🚉. I blame nobody but myself and my "always on" mindset of the time. I didn't know how to take a break and was too tired to function. Long story short, I fractured my spine and spent the next few months in a spinal corset. I literally lacked the core strength to get out of bed without using my arms to get up! I was told I would basically have to get surgery for my spine to fix it and that the success rate was only 50%... The other option was being wheelchair ♿ bound. I tried to get stronger and it took until early 2015 to run a mile (let's ignore for a minute that a 12 minute mile technically isn't running 🏃). That put me in tears 😭 because in the doctors office after the fall the answer to "will I ever be able to run again?" was "we're not sure". Well, as of 2016 I was able to hurdle 🚧 🏃 over barriers as fast as I could so I guess my willpower paid off. 😝 Now training is my happy place, both for my spine and my mental health. Your body is a temple ✨, look after it. 2017 saw the frightful relapse as the doctors from 2013 made a mistake and I had to get my spine realigned because I was actually walking with scoliosis that the injury left me with where one shoulder was left sagging a good 5 inches lower than the other. I was just hiding it with my posture but you can't hide forever. Facing that was terrifying, but a warrior has to face her fears to come out stronger. I did. I dodged another bullet. Love and look after yourself. Because you deserve the very best. Our bodies need movement, rest, healthy food, and to feel whole. Don't run the rat 🐀 race, there are no medals 🥇 and no finish line that's worth destroying yourself for. You'd think it was a successful decade... I graduated 🎓 from an Ivy League 🍃 school, got my MA, moved across the world, started a career, dodged a major medical bullet ♿, figured out what I want in the whole love, marriage, and baby carriage thing 😘, and got into a competitive sport as an adult 🏃. But at the same time... I really feel like I've lost myself in this process. And I need to stop compromising who I actually truly am at the core 😢. Because my mental health is still in utter shatters, some of my environment is nothing short of toxic, and I feel like I really need to be better at standing up for myself before that is able to truly change for the better. So here's to being more ME in 2020. And to stop compromising about it.
