Gonna geek out on Marvel a second as someone who spent my teens obsessing over it; the reason people are so excited to see Bucky in Thunderbolts is because it looks like we may actually get a storyline for his journey.

Bucky, even when being a title character, has only ever really been used as a plot device to move along the storylines of the other characters.

He has had character development, but all of it has happened off screen; how did he go from being the Winter Soldier to living in Romania in Civil War? What happened in Wakanda? What led to him being pardoned and isolated by himself in his apartment in tfatw? How did he go from his clean cut, hanging with Sam to congressman with long hair again?

Even in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, even though he’s a title character, we are not shown much of his development at all. He plays an integral part in the Marvel universe but only because he has moved along Sam and Steve’s storylines, which is great but it’s nice to see a movie where we get to see him and his own journey/development.

From what we’ve seen in the clips, we see him in his new apartment and it is him that brings together the team and we get to see the process of that in congress. We will actually get to see his character develop in real time.

It never occurred to me before, but all of Bucky's charcater arc happens off screen. Turned into Hydra weapon. On the run from Hydra/S.H.I.E.L.D. Getting his memories back. Healed in Wakanda. All the best Bucky is left to us to fill in the blanks.

Morgan Wilmington->24 yrs, female. daughter of Mildred 'Millie' Wilmington (deceased), father unknown. sister to Buck. working toward a Forensic Psychology degree at the University of Denver. part time waitress at the bar her mom co-owned with an old family friend. currently romantically involved with a Senator's son, though the relationship has seen better days. (the character of Morgan Wilmington is borrowed with permission from @ruralnorth's story Runaway. go check it out, it's amazing!)

Emma Baker->28 yrs, female. daughter of Robert and Margaret Dunne, sister to JD. widow of Adam Baker. first year surgical resident at Denver Health. since her husband's death in the line of duty as an ATF agent, she has distanced herself from the men he once worked with, though that distance will not last for long.

Cyrus Larabee->60 yrs, male. husband of Jeanette (deceased), father to Chris and Sam. connoisseur of expensive liquor, gambling, and other substances of a less than legal nature, and purveyor of the same. estranged from his son, Chris, since the latter left home to join the army, but still close with his daughter, Sam.

Jared Whittemore->30 yrs, male. son of Senator Kevin Whittemore and his wife, Jolene. recently returned home from a stint in rehab (covered up by his father), and currently in search of his next fix. currently dating Morgan Wilmington.

Tucker Jones->58 yrs, male. long-time friend of Cyrus Larabee. second-in-command for their business.

Holden Smith->28 yrs, male. on-again, off-again boyfriend to Sam, nephew to Tucker, and member of Cyrus Larabee's 'crew'. recently deceased.

they didn’t show us much of the awfulness of the general protocol Hydra used with their captive brainwashed super assassin in Winter Soldier, but the little snippets they did take the time to include paint such a picture. The constant armed guard, Pierce backhanding him with no fear he’d retaliate, but THIS bit of him in the fucking chair most of all. Because of what you wordlessly see in his face and body language, which is that he KNOWS. He’s conditioned to sit back and accept it, so strongly that he opens his mouth for the bite guard, but you can see that his body remembers what comes next and that it is something to be terrified of.

That’s what makes me so obsessed with this character: he’s so powerful and deadly and scary when we’re introduced to him, and then we learn that he is simultaneously TOTALLY unimaginably helpless, trapped in this existence where he only rarely has any awareness, much less agency. Where he opens his mouth for the bit to be electroshocked into a blank slate, and you can see some tiny vestigial part of the man he was screaming behind his blank eyes.
