Hiatus

So, the people who have read Eyes On Me or Love your jeans already know, but I'm writing this out in case someone comes from my other fics. I am going on an indefinite hiatus, starting now. (Which is kinda funny, because I started writing Portfolio so I'd have something to post and wouldn't disappear while writing a complete multichapter fic.)

But the thing is, after almost 15 years in fandom, I lost passion for it. I stopped reading fics in mid-September, and writing has been a struggle since late October.

I had plans for two more chapters, one for Eyes On Me, which would've been base Don a prompt and one for MAKE SOME NOISE!!! which I also had a vote on while trying to push through this block. If I ever find it in me to write again, these will be the first because I do feel very bad about getting hopes up for that update and then abandoning it, but right now, it's not in the cards. I'm very sorry.

I might be back in a month or two if I find my passion for fandom again, or I might never be back if I don't. I don't know yet. I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst with this post.

Thank you guys if you have ever read any of my fics, I cannot put into words how much I appreciated each and every comment, kudo, bookmark and hit. So thank you, truly.

So I just watched 10Dance on Netflix (I'm a big fan of Machida Keita with black hair and slutty little waistcoats) and it reignited my love for ballroom dancing and JayTim are so ballroom dancing coded it physically pains me.

So here we go!

Tim Drake is up and coming smooth/standard dancing prodigy under the wings of Bruce and Dick. He and his partner Cass are dominating the field, but everyone keeps talking that something about them is missing. They are perfect in every way of the word: their holds are immaculate, they never miss a step and their musicality and flow is unmatched in a way the ballroom dancing community hasn't seen since Dick stepped away from competitions after splitting with his partner Kori. (He started with Babs, they split, and then won everything with Kori as well. Both match ups were legendary in their own rights) But they're like watching music box dancers dance. They're perfect, but they're inhuman. They lack the emotions.

Jason Todd is Bruce's protege from years before. Nobody knows what happened, he just disappeared one day, even though everyone though he would be next big thing in the Rhythm/Latin dancing division. But then Tim's previous partner, Steph badgers him into competing after leaving Bruce's studio and Tim to focus on the Rhythm dances instead of the standard ballroom. The two of them pair up and they're GOOD, but they're like a wildfire. Both burn so bright it's like they're competing against each other as well.

Then Tim and Cass want to get into competing in all 10 dances, but this is when their lack of emotion comes to bite them in the ass. The lack the swagger, the fire, the passion that is a must for a good rhythm/latin dance. So Cass asks Steph to help, and despite his objections, Jason also gets stuck helping them out and in turn, he and Steph also keep going back to the standard/smooth dances they started out with under Bruce's training.

Jason and Tim don't like each other. They dance like they are fighting as they go through the lessons. Tim keeps correcting Jason's brashness in the standard dances, while Jason keeps making fun of Tim for dancing like he has a stick up his ass. But his hands are glued to Tim's hips to try and get him to roll it right and Tim's body is so fucking close to him in the closed hold during Standard dances.

They should most definitely fuck in front of a dance studio mirror. (not against it. Those shits can be very unstable. Take it from someone who has broken one before by accidentally leaning on it at 11.)

During the lessons they kind of come to realise that they are the perfect match. Jason gives a strong enough base that Tim can let go of himself during dancing and not overthink it and Jason keeps himself to technique and everything when he's dancing with Tim, because if he doesn't, Tim will fall and despite his threats, Jason doesn't want that.

(Steph and Cass also reach this conclusion about themselves, so that side pair is also set. Steph is bright enough to spark a fire in Cass that Tim's stability kind of kept on the low, and Cass is safe without drowning Steph out so Steph can perform to her fullest extent)

Competitions happen, maybe Black Mask could be Jason and Steph's new teacher and he somehow fucks them over because of course he does, and they eventually go back to Bruce's studio after a big blow out fight during which Bruce and Jason settle their misunderstandings.

Both pairs win in their own divisions and during the honour dance, they dance with Jason-Tim, Steph-Cass pairings.

I haven't decided if they should continue until both pairs compete in both divisions, but it's not like I'm about to write this so I'll leave that up to your imaginations.

So I did/do have an idea for a DamiTim thing, but it's currently not in the works. I might get to it one day, but sadly that's not anytime soon, I'm sorry.

In general, I'm not exactly sure where I am with the ship, because I usually see Damian as like 14-15, and I don't like reading about underage characters in contexts like Portfolio, but one of the best fics I ever read was DamiTim, so there's also that.

So I guess I'm not for it or against it. It changes depending on the context.

Thank you for the question though, I will definitely remember that there was interest for that ship! :D

Raccoon's Dumpster of Ideas: There will come a ruler (Vampire!Dick x Human!Tim)

Disclaimer: I only read DC vs Vampires until Tim and Jason died and I'm not planning on picking it up again.

So we start off with Dick being turned into a vampire and he's not handling it well. He doesn't want to kill, he doesn't want to hurt anything, so he starts breaking into blood banks, but the guilt is choking him every time. He also hides it from the family so they don't worry about him and to make sure Bruce doesn't convince himself Dick is going to turn evil because of this now.

Tim figures it out, because there is nothing about Dick Grayson that goes unnoticed by him. He offers support, and while Dick is not willing to drink his blood, he accepts Tim's help in finding out how to turn Dick back to human.

They find out that they need to kill the vampire who turned Dick and then use that vampire's blood in an intricate ritual, so they go to hunt the vampire down.

Shenanigans happen, the vampire turns out to be the Vampire King and is much more powerful than they expected.

Dick gets injured while they're on the road and since they're far away from any blood bank, he has to drink from Tim. This leads to sexy times, but he also drinks too much and almost kills Tim, AND now the temptation to drink from Tim has gone from bad to unbearable. Afraid that he's going to hurt Tim, he pushes him away and they separate.

Which is when the vampire king swoops in and nabs Tim. Obviously.

Cue the scene:

"He fought valiantly, but he's just a mere human after all," the vampire king smirked, stroking his hand down Tim's pale cheek.

Dick's chest tightened. His heart was no longer beating, he was incapable of feeling fear like that. But the anger pumping in his veins restarted his blood stream and gave him the kiss of life he had been searching for all this time.

He had been fighting the red mist of rage all his life. First, at Tony Zucco. Then at Bruce, Deathstroke, Tarantulla, everyone. Dick fought it and held himself back so he could be the light he wanted to be.

But Dick Grayson was dead. The Vampire King had killed him. And now he killed Tim.

Dick chuckled. His fangs grazed his bottom teeth, and for once, he didn't mind the bite of the tip against the soft flesh. He welcomed the pain, the discomfort. He pushed his hand through his hair.

The vampire king scowled.

"What's so funny, you insolvent brat?" The king snarled. Dick's eyes flitted to the man's hand. His fingers dug into Tim's skin, and Dick wanted to tear every digit one by one from his body. He was outright laughing now.

Dick Grayson was dead. The hope of the superhero community was gone. The light to Batman's shadow had been distinguished. All that was left was a dead man, who had to destroy life to survive. For the first time, Dick didn't want to hold his anger back anymore. What was the point? He was no longer Dick Grayson, and the only light he wanted to hold onto was lying broken and lifeless in front the Vampire King.

Dick's eyes watered as he let the red smog coat his mind. His face hurt from his smile.

"I'm going to kill you." It was not a threat. It was an exclamation.

He uses part of the vampire king's blood to turn Tim to save his life and then uses the other half to turn Tim back to human during the ritual, then accepts his new role as both the vampire king and as a vampire in general, and he rules with Tim by his side. (Eventually he will turn him, but only when they're both ready for that.)

I'm not going to write this, because I don't really want to write anymore, so a multichapter is out of question and this would be that. So yeah.

If posting fic online has taught me anything, it’s that I have no idea how the reader will react to anything. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Not the faintest clue.

Fics that I think I scribbled off just to get them out there get the kindest, most rapturous feedback. Fics I slaved over, agonized over, bled my soul into get a couple tepid replies. Fics I thought were me revealing the darkness and weird kink that lives in my brain, scared to even post it for fear of judgement, get, “Aaaw that’s so sweet!” replies. Baffling.

My conclusion? You just never know. You really just can’t know. When I did a workshop with 20 other writers I would try to guess what their critique of my story would be and I was right maybe 1 in 20 times. Only one other writer would have the same critique for my story that I had. And it wasn’t even always the same person.

The encouraging part about this is, if self recrimination, the fear that you know what people won’t like about your story, is holding you back, just say fuck it! You’re almost certainly wrong! All you can do is make it the best story you can for the energy you have. And yeah, sometimes that means scribbling it out in an evening and kicking it out to the void of the internet before you can change your mind or worry about editing it more than once because then you’ll never post it.

It’s all chaos, man. You don’t get to decide what the audience thinks. All you can do is create it and put it out there for them to decide.

To those fanfic writers that are not english native speakers: sometimes, when I read your work, I notice that english isn’t your first language, because there are strange phrases. I know immediately that to you, they are perfectly normal, since it’s the way your language describes things. And I love that, because here you go, creating your art, in a language you spent so much time learning, just so that other people can enjoy your stories! It is so amazing and I will never criticise you for that, but instead I will be thankful that you put in all the effort.

Writing is hard. Writing in a language that is not your native tongue is even harder. I love and respect the hell out of you all!

I read a book a while back, which I have completely forgotten the name of, but the author mentioned teaching poetry workshops to children of different age groups and said that the a lot of the younger kids came out with some really sublime stuff because they hadn’t internalised as many cliches and boring stock phrases in the English language yet, while the older kids tended to write very formulaic stuff in comparison. I think that writers working in a language that’s not their native tongue bring a similar quality to their work. You’ll see phrases that a native speaker could never come up with that are so fresh and beautiful.

We native English speakers tend to do a lot of washing in each others’ water, so to speak, when it comes to writing. We’re all drawing from the same stock pool of set phrases, idioms, metaphors, and classic literary references. 

You second-language folks, you bring the fresh and the new into that pool, and I absolutely am grateful for that.
