KEY POINTS / BIOGRAPHY
I. childhood and hogwarts years: Rabastan would never be as good as Rodolphus, he’d known that from the day he was born. The two of them were totally different. Rod was obedient, but he had a job to do as the next heir. Rabastan, on the other hand, did everything but what he was told. He had been wild and rambunctious since he was young, never wanting to attend his tutoring lessons, always shouting and causing a scene. He liked being the center of attention, but nobody ever really paid him any mind. Parents were always busy with his brother, prepping and priming him to become a proper head of house, while Rabastan was often forgotten about. Part of him knew it was a blessing, to have the freedom and the means to do anything he wanted, but the selfish side of him wanted nothing but his parents love and affection.
He started acting out more and more as he grew older, accepting the fact that in order to get attention it needed to be bad attention. A bit of a pyromaniac, any time he could get his hands on a book of matches he’d start a small fire somewhere in the house, always putting it out before it got too out of hand. His poor mother had been victim to his antics, losing many expensive gowns and pieces of furniture just to have somebody look at him for longer than a passing glance. Although, after some time, the act grew old, and his parents stopped giving him the reactions he wanted. Once Rodolphus had gone off to Hogwarts, Rabastan’s behavioural issues calmed down slightly. Now that he was the only child in the house all eyes were on him, and that was all he ever wanted. It was a short two years before he went to school, too, and he took the time to actually listen to his father and learn how to act in a formal setting, along with other basic life skills. It was rather obvious that he’d never compare to his brother and that their parents definitely favoured him. But at least they were talking to him.
The sorting hat was on his head for an entire minute, humming about where Rabastan was best suited. “Ambitious and cunning like a Slytherin, like the rest of your family before you, yet intelligent and creative like a Ravenclaw.” Maybe the hat could sense the excitement that sparked through him at the thought of being put in Ravenclaw, maybe that was why he chuckled and shouted it out louder than any other student’s after him. Rabastan knew it wouldn’t go over well at home, the howler he received on his second day was proof of that, but he found some kind of satisfaction knowing his parents were disappointed in him. Even far away from them, he could still make them think of him.
Ravenclaw proved to be a good fit for Rabastan. Doing well in classes was a bit of a surprise considering how much he hated his tutoring at home. Perhaps it was because Hogwarts actually taught him how to use magic, how to duel, how to use a broom. He did better in classes that required his wand, Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts being his top classes, but he still enjoyed History of Magic and Care of Magical Creatures. Soon enough he joined the Quidditch team as a chaser and he thoroughly enjoyed playing on the team. Rabastan was thriving in Ravenclaw, smart, popular and good-looking, he really was the whole package. But he still found himself being compared to Rodolphus, professors reminding him how well-behaved his elder brother was, how he did better in classes and on his exams. It was frustrating, but Rabastan had just learned to live with it.
Despite being a good student, he did find himself in his fair share of trouble. The desire to be the center of attention never went away, and he did what he could be be noticed. A bit of a bully to muggleborns and half-bloods, he’d gotten a few detentions for throwing harmless jinxes their way. It didn’t really bother him, it gained him a good reputation amongst the people who mattered.
II. during the first wizarding war: Graduating with top marks and astounding skills in Quidditch, Rabastan had a choice to do anything he wanted. His parents never really pressured him to get married and start a family the way they did with Rodolphus. Not knowing what he wanted to do, he decided that he simply wanted to focus on the war and supporting the Dark Lord in any way he could. Rabastan was always the first to volunteer to take on a difficult mission, ready and willing to die for what he believed in.
With his willingness to do whatever was needed, and his brothers incredible brain, the two of them became quite the pair. They grew closer within early adulthood, though their relationship had never really been particularly bad, just slightly complicated. He was happy to know his brother was supportive of him, and for once in his life his parents were actually proud of the choices he made. Their pride only fed in to his ego, he felt unstoppable.
It was towards the end of the war when he suffered a near-fatal injury, a curse causing his body to freeze from the inside out. If he had made it to St. Mungo’s only five minutes later it could have ended his life. Rabastan had been out of commission by the time Voldemort was defeated and he cursed himself for not being at his side to fight and protect him.
III. where are they now?: After recovering and leaving St. Mungo’s, the war was over and the world was different. Rabastan didn’t know how to act in this world, and he supposed his first order of business was to find a job. He settled on a Hit Wizard position, not something his parents raved about, but it was good enough. It gave Rabastan a sense of power and it reminded him of his past. Out in combat, dueling against dangerous criminals. It gave him something to do, it was something he enjoyed, and it upheld the new reputation the Lestrange family was attempting to make for themselves.
Rabastan was still a loudmouth, constantly butting heads with his boss and anybody who got in his way, but he was usually able to talk himself out of any situation. He’d learned from his brother how to put on the charm and manipulate things to go his way. It was a skill he’d mastered by this point, only challenged by Rodolphus himself.
Now that everything was over, his parents were beginning to pressure him into finding a wife and allowing the family name to live on. It wasn’t anything he found himself concerned with, never really being one to jump when told to. Rabastan loved his freedom and independence, he wouldn’t trade it for a thing. Though, some days he does think that settling down doesn’t sound like the absolute worst thing in the world, but he wanted to do it on his own terms, not because his parents wanted him to. Perhaps if he found the right person, but he wasn’t actively looking.
