jill tuck is so wonderful because she’s introduced in saw iii as a beautiful/loving/mysteriously absent wife of an antagonist and you’re like oh I get who she is. by all cinematic conventions she should be dead so her husband can seem a little bit more human. & then she shows up, physically unharmed and sort of inhuman herself. I mean she’s so rooted in the fridged wife characterization that she doesn’t really have any inner world. from her job we’re supposed to think that she’s incredibly empathetic & from her marriage with john we’re meant to think that she’s loving & from her loneliness we’re meant to think that she’s grieving. but she also has no internal world because she is still fundamentally a Fridged Woman. her empathy & love & grief seem so synonymous with What Jill Is that the writers don’t even care to truly establish them. so what we’re left with is a character who hints at such deep emotion, but is, in her actual mannerisms, cold & sort of sardonic. you don’t even need to establish what she represents in the story so the only thing that we actually know is what appears on the surface. she’s 2 dimensional and hollow at the same time. my beautiful unfridged just a second too late girl my melted jello girl. my hackneyed girl
