Peso’s design is a completely fictitious species of penguin; however, I have in mind that his species would live somewhere in Chilé. His species is a mix between the king penguin (Chile), little penguin (Australia/New Zealand), and the yellow-eyed penguin (New Zealand).
I personally think his mother’s family was a mix of yellow-eyed penguins and little penguins in his hometown in New Zealand, and then she moved to Chile when she was still an infant or young child. His father is a king penguin who was native to Chile. However, his father was raised by his biological uncle and his husband, who was a chinstrap penguin, so he also closely identifies himself with the lifestyle and culture in Antarctica. (The reason for this is that I grew up with the British version, but then came to like the Hispanic version as well, so I'm HC-ing that he has a high-pitched, slightly Spanish accent. Some of the words that are related to his maternal grandparents are pronounced with a slightly british inflection)

Both of his parents met when they were in college, students from the same school in a transfer program at a university in North America. They were both in different majors at the time, with Perla (mom) pursuing psychology and Pedro (dad) pursuing engineering/ construction. They were really great friends, which somehow turned into a ‘relationship’ (read: QPR) during their second-to-last semester. To be honest, to me, their relationship was initially very close with many, many forehead kisses, but slowly became further apart as they turned older. Although they’re still really, really close with each other. No one in their circle really saw any difference in their relationship, but then they also interpreted it as romantic, so…
Tl;Dr: Peso gets two amazing parental figures with a healthy relationship! Yippie!
I do have some ideas further down the line. Due to the unsafe working conditions, his dad started to get heavily sick, especially with how few safety regulations and poor material quality, with long exposure time. After a very long couple of years, during which Perla and his close circle finally got him to go to the doctors (around the time when Peso was in elementary/enrolling in middle school), he was diagnosed by the doctor to have pneumoconiosis (maybe, I'm not sure yet). Pedro still suffers from the chronic disease, but he generally has fewer flare-ups than in the earlier days. Pedro then worked as a stay-at-home dad until Pinto was around 4-5th grade, and started working remotely/started to use his engineering degree for non-labour jobs. At that time, Perla started to work as a psychologist, developing her career, and had a side-hustle of knitting, which Pedro helped with. They got help from family members for the kids from time to time.
Perla very much had a cultural identity crisis, due to being raised in a more New Zealand kind of home, but having peers who are Chilean. In her youth, she struggled especially in social terms to not act too much of an outsider, but still have a connection with her parents' culture. She also had some issues with social interaction, which she didn't really have until Pedro came around, and she started to make more friends while in college.
I'm not sure what they're like yet, but I think Perla and Pedro are Chill Like That type of parents.
