This is my ident for Unit 32 and Unit 1 for Digital Cinema Media. It came out exactly as I wanted it, being both comedic and entertaining to watch. I wanted to make my ident about comedy as that is the genre I personally want to pursue in my career, so that is what I focused on. I used a voice of god type character to introduce cinema and used him for comedy, I did this by making him come across stupid and bad at his job when what he has to do is actually very obvious. It also helps to keep the viewer anticipating what is coming next as it seems as though the character himself doesnât know.
If I were to redo my ident I would probably like to take the time to film my own shots, that way I could make it more mine rather than using an already established film. I may also take more time to find more sound effects to make the voice more believable, adding in foley to make the character seem more real and as if he were actually there. I could accomplish this by adding sound effects such as footsteps, machine sounds and possibly even the voice of the characters assistant.
In conclusion I was happy with how my ident turned out because even though it is quite simple and easy to make, it is enjoyable to watch and can bring about a good response from the audience, possibly getting them in the mood or cheering them up before a film plays, especially if it is a comedy film they are about to see.
Making Process
The creating of my ident wasnât that difficult. I started off by recording the audio lines in Audacity and exporting them as .wav files. I dragged them into Premiere and placed them where about they needed to go (adjusting their placement later on based on the footage). I added in extra sound effects that I downloaed from freesound.org to make the voice sound more realistic and make more sense (light switch sounds when the voice asks for things to be turned on and page turning sounds when he is looking for the next thing to play). I added the white box to simulate a bright light, The Revenant footage for the visuals and the DCM logo to play at the end. I adjusted the audio levels of the voice lines to sound clearer and animated the opacity on the images and footage to appear at the correct times. I also animated the volume of The Revenant footage so that when the voice was talking you could still hear him over The Revenant footage.
Unit 32 & Unit 1 - Storyboards
Target Audience
Age: 18-50 because my ident is a comedic ident which most audiences may funny but older and younger audiences may not understand. It is possible for other ages to like the ident however it is unlikely. I also believe it is too long for a really young audience to enjoy as they may get bored of it very quickly. Also a young audience wouldnât be able to watch the ident as it has a vicious scene from âThe Revenantâ in it, which isnât suitable for a young audience below the age of 18.
Gender: Male/Female - My ident doesnât have any sort of gender as the ident is a comedy bit which is suitable for both genders. It may sway slightly more towards a male audience however as there is a scene from the film âThe Revenantâ which is a film aimed more towards a male audience.
Class/Ethnicity/Nationality:Â My ident mainly focuses towards people who speak English as their native language so that they can understand the ident as a whole. The class may be that of middle class as the ident is for a cinema and they will be the main endorsers of cinema.
Mind Map - Unit 32 & Unit 1
Health & Safety
1. I will be using a headset microphone to record the audio for my ident, I must be aware of the long wire to not trip and fall.
2. Keep liquids away from the electronic equipment as spillages could break the equipment.
3. Keep food away from the electronic equipment as crumbs could break the equipment.
4. Be mindful of equipment overheating as it is Summer and they will be using a lot of power to render.
5. I should be careful as to what websites I use to download assets as a bad download could affect my computer by infecting it with a virus.
Pre-Production
Budget: My ident will not have a budget as I will be making it solely with equipment and assets that I already have access to. I will not have to pay for transport either as I will be creating the ident at home by myself.
Schedule: Tuesday, 16th June - I will take this time to record the audio for my ident and edit it together within the night. As my idea is fairly simple it will not take very long to create and I can get it done before the deadline.
Crew: Ryan Stevens - Myself (The voice, editor and director) Equipment: Razer Kraken 7.1 (Microphone) & PC (To edit on). Software: Audacity (For audio) & Adobe Premiere Pro CC Clearances: N/A (Shot at home) Copyright: My ident has a clip from the film âThe Revenantâ which I would have to ask 20th Century Fox for permission to use in my ident. I also used sound effects from the website freesound.org, the sounds on there are however copyright-free for creators.
Written Treatment
My ident will work as a voice of god is speaking to an imaginary editor/production assistant. It will begin with the lights being turned on, in which the screen will turn bright white. The voice will wince and react to the bright light, asking the voiceless assistant to turn the lights off. The voice will then wonder what to add next before asking for the surround sound to be turned on, a switch will be flicked and audio from the popular film âThe Revenantâ will play. The voice will, for a second, believe that that was all that was left before realising he is missing something else from the video. You will hear him flicking through his pages before determining that he is missing the visuals before asking the assistant to turn on the video, another switch will flick and the visuals of the film will show. The voice will be happy with the result before sitting back to to watch the film. After a few seconds of the film showing the DCM logo will appear and âThe Revenantâ visuals will fade out. After a few more seconds the DCM logo will then fade out, bringing the ident to itâs end.
Development
Management and Production Roles: I will be personally handling the management and production rolls all by myself. I will be using my own equipment as well as equipment provided by Aylesbury College. This includes a Nikon D3300, RODE Mic Video Mic Pro and a standard tripod. This also means that filming will not have to depend on others, making it easier for me to stick to my schedule. I will be the only actor in my film, which means I do not need to film based on the availability of a cast. I will be film on a tripod, meaning that I will not need someone working the camera at all times.
Working for a client: When you are working for a client their needs must match your final product, reducing your personal creativity as the film maker. Usually the ident would be suitable for the type of channel it is being created for - A childrenâs channel would have a bright, fast paced ident where as a history channel would have a more calm and appropriate ident. When creating the ident the film maker must always refer to their clients brief and ideas.
Production papers: When working for a client they would usually like to have evidence that you have a plan for your production. This is usually shown in the form of productions papers which include all of the information about what is going to happen. For example this would include what the video will be, how it will be filmed, the people involved (with their designated roles) and when and where it will be shot.
Definitions
2D Animation:
2D animation is a traditional animation style in which the image can only move along the X and Y axis (Up and down) and are restricted from moving along a Z axis. 2D Animation is used in TV shows, film and advertisements but has been replaced by 3D animations in a lot of instances.
3D Animation: Unlike 2D animation, 3D animation allows the subject to move along the Z axis, allowing the subject to appear more real to the viewer. 3D animation has, in recent times, replaced a lot of 2D animation and is used greatly in film, TV and video games.
Stop Motion: Stop motion is a type of animation in which many images are cut together to simulate movement. Each image usually consists of a small difference from the last image so that when a large amount of them are cut together motion is created. This type of animation takes a very long time and can easily go wrong if an object is moved incorrectly.
Layering: Layering is a technique often used in graphic design in which layers are used to indicate and order of visibility. The top layer will show above all layers below it and the bottom layer will be behind all layers above it. This technique is generally used for organization but can also be used to create different effects, for example a stacked effect, where the images look stacked above one another.
Editing Software: Editing Software is used to add effects to footage, image or audio as well as to cut them together. It is essential in a production as it ties all media together to create the final production. I will be using Adobe Premiere Pro CC for my ident as it is available at college as well as owning it myself at home.
Memory: When obtaining a lot of shots for your production you will need to consider the amount of memory you have on your storage device. Higher quality shots with a higher FPS will take up more memory and you will therefore want to consider what size storage you will need and whether you will need multiple storage devices for back-up.
File Formats: Different forms of media can be saved under different file formats. Some file formats are better suited to different reasons. For example some file formats cannot be read in certain editing programs. I will be filming and saving my video as MP4 as those are both suited to Adobe Premiere and include all of the features that I need on my file whereas a format like MP3 would not include the video.
Scheduling: On a production you need to schedule with all of your cast and crew to film at times that suit everyone as well as the shoot. Itâs also used for organization and meeting deadlines. The filming for my video will take place within a week as I have the benefit of working by myself and having to make a short video.
Meeting Deadlines: A deadline is usually set by the client so that the production is completed by a set date and/or time. My deadline is 6/17/2016, I plan to get my production done by then by organizing my days and my work in order or when I plan on doing it, having the video complete on the 6/16/2016, and finishing my final paperwork and evaluation before the deadline.
Management of Resources: When producing a video there will be resources such as lights, camera and audio that needs to be managed; for example a DoP will manage the camera and decide which shots work best, whilst working closely with the director. As I will be the sole creator for my video and I have less resources to worry about the filming will be very straightforward.
Liason with Clients: In a production where the product is being created for a client, a liason with the clients is recommended as the creator can gain a clear understanding of what the client is looking forward. A face to face liason would work best as the client can visibly show what they want and questions can be asked to help make the product even closer to the clients needs.
Client Negotiation: In some cases a client may want something that the creator is unable to produce, this could be due to limitations with equipment or merely lack of experience. This means that the film maker and client must negotiate to come up with an alternative or an idea that is both possible to create and meets the clients needs.
Quality Management: In a production the creator or director would have to constantly look to see if all quality is upheld in all segments within the creation. For this production however I will be working alone and handling all segments, meaning the quality of everything will be down to me to begin with, meaning that I would not have to rely and oversee other peoples contributions.
Team Working: In most productions a team is assembled with each member given a different role and something to take care of. Some roles are much larger than others with some having only a small/replaceable part in a production and others being a lot larger with the part needing to be done by someone with good experience to create a better final piece. However everyone in the production must understand exactly what is happening in the production to make the work flow better. For this production however I will not be working in a team and therefor teamwork cannot be applied.
Presentation: A large amount of preparation should be used when presenting to a client. and professionalism is important so that they believe that you can be reliable and have experience in your field. If the client have doubts about your ability to work you may be replaced. In order to be prepared you should have a clear vision of the product as well as preproduction information. You need to know what you want to create as well as how you are planning on creating it.
Creative Communication
Enhancing ideas and pushing technology: In recent years technology has grown to become more expansive and reduce the limits we had on media productions. Software has been created that allows us to break barriers that we once had; meaning that when we are brainstorming ideas for a production we can be more radical with our ideas as they are more likely possible to create in this day in age. Our understanding of technology has grown in hardware as well, with the quality of sound and video we can capture increasing as well as the way we capture them.
This means that more is expected from productions nowadays and it is quite easy for a production to fall short in comparison to other things that have been created. For example the E4 idents include a heavy amount of special effects in terms of animation and CGI, this sets the bar for other idents and if they canât match up then the E4 ident will stand out and be favoured among the audience.
Communicating visual ideas to a non-visual audience: Viewers of idents who are visually impaired would also need a way of experiencing idents, this could be done through a voiceover explaining what the channel is trying to get across, with the experience enhanced through good music and sound effects.
Most audiences would enjoy watching an ident with bright colours and text with fast paced animations. This is how video effects apply to idents, but for those who are visually impaired they would be missing out on these stimulations, this shows us why voice overs are so important and why they would often include humour to apply to all audiences.
Voiceovers could also be used to attract the attention of those who are not paying their full attention to the visuals.
Creating under pressure of time and budget: A deadline can pressure a designers ability to create and therefore affect the final products quality. These deadlines can be very strict which is why it is important for the creator of an ident to plan their process in advance. If the creation process takes too long and doesnât make the deadline the channel may have an unfinished product that cannot be aired or an unfinished product which is aired and affects the channel directly. Due to this pressure each work is relied on the work efficiently to a high standard of work.
Because a large amount of money can go into the production of an ident the team must make sure that the money is spent well and according to the time until deadline, to make sure that the money and effort spent is worth it.
Appealing to target audience and appreciation of desired tone: One of the most important things to keep in mind when creating an ident is your target audience - who you are trying to relate the channel to. The ident is supposed to create an identity for the channel and if the viewers are unable to relate to it they may begin to associate the ident to the channel and begin to neglect the channel entirely; the opposite effect of what an ident is supposed to do.
It is important for a channel to have brand loyalty as it is a sure fire way to keep an audience, and make back the money spent on ident. This is why rebranding can be a risky decision as it can put loyal viewers off of the channel.
For an example E4â˛s ident needs to appeal to a large variety of people as their channels represents a whole array of different genres. It needs to not lean towards any genre over others. So to create their ident they focused on something that most audiences would enjoy and created something creative. It still uses the colour that their channel is related to as well as the font they commonly use, without swaying towards as certain genre.
E4 Ident Analysis
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFSaGi4niB4&ab_channel=e4idents
This ident for E4 uses a large amount of animation to appeal to itâs wide variety of audiences. Because E4â˛s shows appeal to all kinds of different people creating an identity for their channel would be difficult as there is no specific genre to go on. Instead E4â˛s ident is very much a mashup of many different styles among their many different idents. They use a large amount of purple as that is their main colour, this may make viewers think of E4 whenever they see the colour purple. The logo then appears at the end, relating E4 to the entire ident. The ident is very crowded which does make it overflow a small amount however this could work as a bonus too because the viewer may notice new things each time they see it.
The ident lasts 20 seconds which is not too short or too long meaning it can appeal to both a younger and older audience. The ident itself doesnât feature any information about the channel such as what shows will be airing, this is probably so that the creative feature which takes place during the ident isnât ruined by a voiceover or text on screen and rather all the attention is focused on the animations taking place.
Opportunities: An ident like this creates a large opportunity, because it is interesting and enjoyable to watch it is possible that people will watch the E4 channel just to see the ident, or they may favour the channel over another because of the ident. Due to the large amount of purple, people who have seen the ident may begin to relate that colour to the channel and thinking of E4 whenever they see the colour purple. Another opportunity could be created through sharing such as social media sharing; because the ident is very likable it may be shared online, attracting more audiences to watch the channel. Finally because the ident is quite long and has a lot of things happening it will be able to be reused a large amount of times before audiences grow bored of it.
Limitations: The ident is limited in the fact that it presents no information of the channel and what type of shows are playing and when they will be aired. Very frequent viewers of the channel could start to dislike the ident due to its length and may begin to favour another channel with a shorter ident (this could be fixed by switching between longer and shorter idents). The ident doesnât steer towards any type of genre and rather works towards all audiences, although this could be a good thing it could also make viewers unsure of the channelâs identity which, in turn may make them stop watching. This ident uses the aspect ratio of 16:9 which is perfect for TVâs that have that aspect ratio however TVs with different aspect ratios may obscure the image, making the ident look worse.
