i i was playing this game, it was ultrakill, and i found a secret room that showed me different drawings of hand painted colored balls and black lines, and the name of a girl, coco, like the girl from witch hat atelier, it showed a screen saying something necessary and important would happen at a school
i went to that school, to see what was going to happen, i went there and it looked like the school was preparing for a long travel, children were holding luggage and packing bags, coco was there, she was quiet and alone, lost in thought far from other children, she has always been like this, almost as if she wasnt there
there were some famous people there as well, some streamers and voice actors, they were all talking around with some of the children dressed up in fantasy costumes as there was a festival at the school happening at the same time the children were waiting for the mysterious trip to start, they didnt know where they'd go or how or for how long, the school did not give any further details
after a while, the sky begun to turn white, like a sheet of paper, the colors of the school became dull, turning everything into either balck of white as the horizon began to fade, remaining only the walls around the school and the space within it with the children
the school had porcelain tiles on the wall, most of them were white but some were blue, during the transition, the blue tiles seemed almost as if they were chroma keyed, they begun to show flashes of colorful images, caleidoscopic and geometric patterns but it lasted only a few instants before they returned to their original state
i talked with coco, she told me she was playing ultrakill earlier too, and found the secret room, but instead of seeing her name she saw pattens similar to the ones on the tiles, she said they were beautiful and mesmerizing, that vision lasted longer than the ones in the tiles but it was also fleeting, she wanted to see more, see them again, but they never came back
she seemed calm with the situation, her parents were not there, unlike the other children, she did not have friends in school so she was not speaking or panicking along with anyone, like she was not part of the same entity as the other children -that entity being the school body- like she had different philosophical properties than the rest of the children
the children started to panic, it seemed like the entire world was erased other than the school, colors came back but the school was still left on the white void, some children tried to leave by climbing over the walls, but 2d creatures made of what seemed like paint colored 2d circles and 2d lines made of ink -in a way that you could even see the brush strokes- caught the children before they fell into the void, and threw them back into the school
the white void sky appeared to show paint colored strokes, black lines and colored spheres, similar to the ones in the secret room, these somehow seemed to portray a message to us, inside the school, it said "stay put, dont leave, you will soon return once this is over" some children took the message in good faith and stopped their escape attempts but others continued, thats when the 2d creatures became more aggressive to those that tried to escape, some children were killed, some others were able to jump over the walls and escape.
I saw as one jumped over the wall, falling into the void, but it seemed like their image begun to split, as if i were seeing double, triple, and then it multiplied into around six images of the same child that began to become further apart and to fade away as they turned into plain outlines as the child fell more into the void, until they completely disappeared
soon children stopped trying to escape, they remained inside, trying to survive with what was left, but we noticed we werent feeling hungry or thirsty, beards did not grow, hair did not change, we had no idea of how long we had been here. so we waited, coco didnt seem worried, she seemed calm and introspective, but she knew just as much as we did about the situation
movement inside the school became slower as time run by, children stopped walking around and just, sat down, waiting, more and more of them stopped trying to move or do anything, they just sat and hugged their legs awaiting. until every single child was like this and no one was running or walking anymore
then they stopped talking, words seemed to run dry as we had exhausted them all with all the time we had been here. And we stayed another odd uncountable and unknowable amount of time like this, no movement, no words just silence and stillness, until one day the ground shook
the sky changed, more hand painted colored balls and black lines appeared, they moved around like the rings of an armillary. The tiles begun showing more flashes of colorful images, but this time they lasted a lot longuer, coco was mesmerized by them
the images on the sky did not seem to portray a message this time, they moved around seeming to follow some kind of logic that was unknown to us
the sky begun to return to the blue it was the day we left, we heard cars on the outside, initially faint but growing more present as the school seemed to return to the place in reality it had left, children ran around happily, excited to be back, coco remained in the same spot, the corner of the school, looking at the sky, with some longing stare that i couldnt peg into any emotion
as the school fully returned to reality, it felt like we were in a subway and it had stopped, like the type of inertia that makes you loose your balance for a second. but instead of our mass being thrown forward, it felt like our presence was displaced. We turned into multiple images of ourselves, and those images became simple faded outlines, almost inperceptible
the doors of the school opened to the outside, and children, their parents and most of the people that were there before, began to spill out into the streets, they were all in the same state as we were, multiple images of themselves that became faded outlines, but as they interacted with the outside world, talk with outsiders (that didnt seem to notice the oddity of our displaced state), interact with objects and talk with eachother, they seemed to solidify more and more until they were back to normal, almost as if they were displaced from reality in a phylosophical way, taken away from reality and their presence gone, but as they interacted with reality, they returned to it, their individual relationships with the world anchoring them once more to reality, until they were back to normal
coco was the last one to leave, she stayed in the school for a while and as all had left and were outside, either returning to their homes or talking about the experience. Coco left the school last, that is with me as an exception, i went to the roof of the school to observe all of them. I saw coco leaving, her image was multiplied and faded as well, it didnt seem to return to normal like the others, coco didnt talk to them or interact with others, as she said she didnt had friends or connections with the other children, she just walked out, her image multiplied and faded started to focus and return to normal in a slug-like pace when compared to the others
as she crossed the street, cars didnt seem to stop for her, not even noticing her, the vehicles passed through her, making her once returning image split more and fade more, she had nothing to connect her to reality, no relationships, no interactions, at her state she wasnt a being, she was a blur in reality, and the more she was ignored and unnoticed, the more she faded, until she completely disappeared, all i could do is hope that she could find her way back to reality, i wished i could help but she was begging to disappear for me as well
it felt odd seeing the memory of her disappear from my memory, at first i remembered her face and name, then i couldnt pin details of her, then she was a blur in my memory, then she was the presence of someone in my thoughts, then she was a simple feeling, the odd curiosity i had when i was talking to the child that was clearly different from the others, then she was the beggining of a fleeting thought, a sharp precipice of a thought that flew by, poking me and flying away before i could peg it into some coherent stream of thought. then there was no more coco.
i went back home, it sat on my kitchen, and i began to play ultrakill once more, i had family visting me and i explained them the game, but once i went to the secret room, there was only a promotion for another game, which was about a giant mage, small houses, and a small fighter. I downloaded the game, it was vr and i played it in my kitchen, but for some reason, every time i played it, i felt a sad feeling, similar to the one i had when i was talking to coco, but this time tainted with a sense of loss and longing, as if i was trying to reach out to something that was no longer there
