#11: What do you mean you lost it?
“What the fuck do you mean you lost it?” Ryan exclaims, staring at Brendon with a mixture of anger and disbelief.
“A fan asked me to take a picture with it so I could prove that we still actually had it! I did, put it somewhere… Now it’s just gone!”
Brendon gazes at Ryan with huge confused eyes, his face just about the definition of honesty. Ryan tries his hardest to keep frowning at him, but the puppy eyes eventually get to him and he turns around. Ryan’s hands find his hair. He pulls it in order to calm down a little. Think over the situation.
His rosevest, gone. One of a kind, lost. His favorite piece of clothing, vanished.
He can hear Brendon awkwardly shifting around him, and the guilt the younger boy feels is so heavy Ryan almost smells it. How can he stay mad?
Ryan turns back to his friend, who is now actually teary eyed. Honestly, he’s too emotional for his own good. Brendon’s too big lips are quivering and his nose goes up in a sniff every once in a while. It’s both touching and annoying. Touching because it’s Brendon, being sad, because of Ryan. Annoying, because it’s his own damn fault Ryan’s mad, because he managed to get rid of Ryan’s favourite vest.
A pang goes through his heart when he thinks of the feel of the fabric. Who knew he could get this emotional over a goddamn vest.
“Ry… I- I didn’t mean to,” a small voice manages, as small as it can get, with the range it normally has. Brendon’s eyes are travelling through the room, avoiding Ryan’s, as if to still search for the thing. It’s quite endearing. Ryan’s insides are melting.
Brendon honestly doesn’t even know what he does to him.
The older friend still glares at the younger one. Brendon feels the obvious glare, and shuffles on his spot. Ryan shouts at the voice in his head (which sounds an awful lot like his own) that tells him how adorable Brendon is. He’s supposed to be angry.
“Whatever… just help me look for it now,” Ryan says, now avoiding Brendon’s eyes, which light up like a christmas tree. Apparently he’s happy to be able to do something. His small frame scurries past Ryan’s lanky one, looking like a fucking idiot, Ryan thinks with an involuntary smile.
Ryan himself starts looking around the tourbus too, for what feels like the milionth time, seeing Brendon bend over to look under one of the bunkbeds. Ryan doesn’t look at his butt, he doesn’t… he does.
After an hour they still have no succes, and Brendon is desperate.
“It can’t be, it just can’t be gone!” he shouts, a little too loud like he always is, “I left it in the bus, I swear, I’m not that dumb.” His eyes are very, very teary now and Ryan almost starts to feel guilty. Brendon is, actually, that dumb, and Ryan knows he’s capable of losing things and forgetting about them. He doesn’t say so, because Brendon looks very sure of himself.
Ryan can’t stay mad. He feels like he has to believe him.
Brendon sits on one of the bunkbeds, putting his hands over his eyes.
“I’m sorry Ryan, I lost your rosevest, your favorite vest, and I lost it-” a soft sobbing starts, and Ryan feels a huge lump in his throat. Like he’s the one who should feel guilty.
He rushes over to the bed, putting his thin arm around Brendon’s narrow shoulders. Brendon instantly leans into the touch, putting his entire weight on Ryan’s light body, who struggles to support it. Brendon puts his head on Ryan’s bony shoulder, who in turn puts his head on top of Brendon’s, while massaging the boy’s jerking shoulder.
Just as he’s about to peck the top of Brendon’s hair, Spencer busts in, with Jon on his heels. His hair is sprayed pink, they both look way too drunk and… he’s wearing Ryan’s rosevest.
“Thanks for lending it to me, dude,” he hiccups, removing the too small vest from his body and tossing it Ryan’s way.
Both him and Brendon stare at it.
