cuz the movie is about the question "is art more important than love" and it answers it with an emphatic YES over and over again. hell it tells you at the beginning! "i left him at a greyhound station west of santa fe, we were 17 and our love was true but I knew what I had to do"

Mia ends the film married to her piece of shit racist bf and Sebastian ends it seemingly without a woman in his life at all and it doesnt MATTER, and that WAS a happy ending.

both their fight over dinner and seb showing up at her house in the middle of the night were explosions over... not "youre not around" or "youre leaving me" but "you aren't making the art you want to make anymore" and both of them recognize that is far worse than some dinky fucking romance. of course they love each other of course they wish they could be together but if the choice is between each other and being artists, the healthy, natural, correct, most beautiful thing to do is always to choose art.
