How To Clean A Crystal Chandelier

Many chandeliers are quite intricate, so be sure to make a note of how the design is put together before you start cleaning. Make a quick drawing or get out your camera and take a few snapshots.

Extra care must be taken around any electrical equipment, so work slowly and follow basic safety precautions. For absolute safety, turn off the power to the breaker box. You will need to install alternative lighting or you will be working in the dark!

Removing all the crystals and glass is a more complete cleaning process that allows you to reach every corner of the frame. Leaving the crystals or glass in place is much quicker.

Do not rotate the crystal chandelier. Walk around the chandelier or move the ladder to clean in sections. Rotating the chandelier runs the risk of loosening the support. If the chandelier is difficult to reach, replace the bulb while cleaning.

Prepare a cleaning solution of one part isopropyl alcohol to four parts distilled water in a spray bottle. Spray a small amount of the solution onto a white cotton glove or lint-free cloth. Wipe the crystal or glass with a damp cloth, then immediately dry it with another glove or cloth.

For heavily soiled chandeliers, you can also try hand washing the glass in warm water with a mild detergent.

To extend the time between cleanings, you can lightly dust your chandelier with a chicken feather duster or wool duster every two to three months. Follow these directions and your chandelier will shine exceptionally bright all year long!
