She is the only child of Miko and Hiroki Ueda. Her mother's family line descends from a priestess who supposedly made a pact with a demon, Akujin. The priestess drank its' blood and made a contract that the first born of her descendants would be the 'demons' offspring, and always would be a girl. The pact would continue when the girl would drink the blood of the demon. The pact would enable the girl to be almost 'demonic' in battle, and able to see chakra trails, among other abilties but would severely stunt their ability to emphasize with others, or show mercy. Miko was particularly interested in this, and attempted to give Natsuko the blood early on (whereas her mother gave it to her in her late teens), but as it was toxic and burned her throat, Natsuko spit it out, giving her some abilities, but not all of them. She is able to see chakra trails, and is focused in battle, but is reluctant to kill without cause. Her mother Miko left the village shortly after the failed attempt, labeled a rogue ninja. Her father remarried a woman named Yoshiko, and Natsuko was raised by him and her. Due to what her mother did, Hiroki is reluctant to let her become a ninja, but begrudgingly agrees. It's a sore point between the two as Hiroki worries Natsuko's reasoning to become a shinobi is more for looking for her mother and learning about her bloodline, something Natsuko actually has no desire in doing, mentally scarred by what her mother did. As she grew up she would be sent on missions to Sunagakure often and grew to be friendly with the Sand siblings, specifically Kankuro, and after the war stars a relationship with Kankuro. Later she moves to Sunagakure to be with him. During an event in the village, Natsuko is given the choice from the demon to drink his blood fully, becoming just like her mother and ancestors. She refuses, and breaks the pact, becoming the last of her line.
Natsuko is impulsive and assertive, and when it comes to her friends she's very committed to protecting them. She does occasionally act like a brat, but her heart's in the right place.
