Let’s Chat About Arophobia

The other day I saw a post from asexual awareness week—which is all fine and dandy, and as an ace person I love to see it—but it did make something glaringly obvious to me that I think we should talk about more. Arophobia. We don’t talk about acephobia very much, and I’ve only ever had one discussion about arophobia in my entire life (and it was with my best friend, another aro/aspec person). Fair warning, this is a long rant, so buckle up.

Unpopular opinion but “ace” is a more visible, allo accepted orientation than “aro” because they can still say “you don’t need sex to have a relationship” and pretend that ace defaults to allo ace (newsflash it doesnt)

There have been discussions about how every time a character is confirmed ace there’s always a rush of “they can be gay and ace” and “aces can still date/be in a romantic relationship”, and how especially the latter phrase can come off as aromisic. And they’re right. It does come off as aromisic being that there’s nothing wrong with not experiencing romantic attraction. And I’m not saying people who say the latter are in the right necessarily, but I can understand where they’re coming from if they’re ace.

There tends to be discourse when ever a character is confirmed as ace, where people will argue whether the character is actually gay or ace. Which is when people say “they can be gay and ace.” And that’s true. But the problem with it is that that kind of statement only comes up when a character is confirmed as just ace but not given a canon romantic orientation.

A lot of people who aren’t ace don’t seem to acknowledge alloace (I.e, gay, bi, lesbian ace) people until it comes down to character rep and shipping. Alloace (not in exact terms) characters are seen as a compromise. Aces can have their ace rep and other people can have their gay/bi rep.

At least that’s how I see it. But please stop using the “we can still love” thing as a defense

I completely do think this comes down to arophobia. That there is such a huge rush to preserve this character’s romantic attraction because if the character is aro, then they ‘lost’ something. They lost their ships, and this character ‘lost their ability to love in the way that matters.’

That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with headcanoning someone as alloace (please do! Even beyond characters that are confirmed as ace!). But are you doing it to preserve a ship? Are you doing it with every character you headcanon as ace?

Aro characters deserve attention and love and headcanons too. Aros and aro aces deserve representation. (Also thank you op for writing this i teared up)

It does mean cucumber, but if we take it less literally, pepino is also used as ‘green, unripe.’ So more accurately, Sr. Hueso is calling Leo an unripe fruit, as in he still has a lot of growing to do. Its actually pretty cute!

(Either that or Hueso is calling Leo a dick, which is another interpretation, but i dont think thats what they were going for)
