We need to lay more blame for "Kids don't know how computers work" at the feet of the people responsible: Google.
Google set out about a decade ago to push their (relatively unpopular) chromebooks by supplying them below-cost to schools for students, explicitly marketing them as being easy to restrict to certain activities, and in the offing, kids have now grown up in walled gardens, on glorified tablets that are designed to monetize and restrict every movement to maximize profit for one of the biggest companies in the world.
Tech literacy didn't mysteriously vanish, it was fucking murdered for profit.
Linux is a very good and powerful alternative.
reminder: you cannot Personal Choises your way out of an Intentional Structural Problem
Fun fact! School Chromebooks block Linux. It's not an easy alternative. You are missing the point
this trend of shitting on peer-reviewed academic studies in favor of tweeting “we already knew this was happening” is so soul-crushing. not to be an elitist cunt, but we have got to open the schools again. people genuinely seem to have forgotten that their personal lived experience isn’t indicative of the larger population, AND IF IT IS…… then you need researchers to support these assertions from a relevant data pool instead of a blog post from 2013 💀
"Believe women and the marginalized" does not replace the value of empirical data.
And stay safe everyone!
abortion is a fundamental right. but our conceptualization of reproductive justice cannot begin and end with abortion rights. it also has to include the right to make an uncoerced decision whether or not to have children.
reproductive control – e.g. forced sterilization and the trafficking of marginalized children – is a bog standard tool of colonialism and genocide.
there are a lot of people who consider themselves anti-capitalists who are altogether too comfortable with the implementation of systems to redistribute poor people’s children to the wealthy
i have this hot take with age verification that I'm not only against it because it's intrusive and gross to adults, I also just don't think it's fair to kids and teens either. preventing kids from seeing anything explicit on the internet is basically just a stepping stone to trying to blinker them to the struggles of marginalised people and understanding the world.
and off the back of that, i have an even hotter take: you won't stop teenagers wanting to see explicit stuff and it's not worth trying to. you should be trying to prevent them interacting with adults who might try and take advantage of them through them sneaking into 18+ spaces, not blocking them from privately figuring out their sexuality
I want to preserve the internet that I enjoyed when I was younger. Maybe that's just nostalgia but I think not letting kids discover weird stuff online is a bit like not letting them play in mud. If you shelter them too much they never develop an immune system or get the enrichment that you had when you were younger. Does clicking a box that says I'm 18 stop anyone? Of course not, but it does make you responsible for what you're viewing, and I think that's a better system than forcing everyone to scan biometrics or some shit just to exist online or anywhere. Don't let privacy be something that our generation and older got to enjoy but they also get to pull up the ladder on and decide that others don't deserve that.
Well said!!
@curiousauthor exactly! that's the thing, you can't and shouldn't try to police the internet in that kind of repressive way, and less invasive ways of keeping adult and minor spaces apart where it's sensible to are a way better solution than forcing adults to give up extremely sensitive personal info and minors to be babies
Did a few more of my bad tacky Daki sketches on this sheet. The hardest angles to draw his face in are the front and slight quarter head turns because of his funny semi angular head shapes. Tackling the biggest features first I feel is the best approach like that big upside down triangular nose... Its a good thing I love wrinkly faces.
