here is the concept board I made before getting started on his design and the thumbnails for the full piece. I was totally stuck for ideas at the beginning so I started by researching crocodiles and alligators and then went on a little word association journey that went like this: mugger crocodiles are a type of crocodile found in India > even though mugger is a corruption of the hindi word magar that's a pretty fitting name for an ambush predator > mugger = robber > I thought the miss fortunes in legends: arceus were kind of cool > river bandit feraligatr.

I imagined him as a character in a legends type game set at the same time as Arceus but in Johto. He's a bandit who robs travellers and the player has to beat him to access the next area, after that maybe you encounter him a couple more times or maybe you can find him in semi-random areas like the miss fortunes. I also like to think he's a bit more competent than the miss fortunes, but only a little: he's kinda stupid.
