PROLOGUE

Time is finite for some, infinite for others.

History is what it is, depending on who writes it, whether it's the winners or the losers. In the long run it doesn't matter as it'll be changed, molded, twisted, and ultimately left to morph into myth and legend.

The recorded history of the Calaryns is scattered across the world in bits that don't add up and pieces that often contradict each other. Most of it is written by non-Calaryns. Still, a race comprised of either warriors or academics has hidden works that surface and find their way slowly to expanding private libraries, their curators thirsting for more.

Five ancient new books for Old God's library have surfaced 300 miles from the Manor. Their descriptions match the Red Book: leather with bird and vine embroidery, and illustrations. But Bright Morn's memories are increasing in intensity and frequency before his 30th birthday a little over a month away. Sometimes enlightenment is a race against time.

The short synopsis:

Bright Morn the Calaryn is reborn every 200 years. Now well established as the Treasured Nephew to Old God Godlynthe (a Calaryn approaching his 200th birthday) Morn is intent on finding the abusers of his adopted son, Dasch. He wants to do this before his rapidly approaching 30th birthday when, as a Calaryn, he spends the first month in a catatonic state while his mind relives past lives.

His intentions are interrupted by the arrival of the Terrins, a nomadic tribe and Favored Mistress's people. Among them is the beautiful Sorrifa, Favored Mistress's sister, a warrior woman who captures his heart immediately.

He's set to travel 300 miles to retrieve five leather bound books about the Calaryn people, one with a portrait of Pale Morn, a young man who looks exactly like him. His memories of past lives are intruding daily, making it almost impossible to function, can he make it back to the Manor and safety in time?

Synopsis:

Bright Morn of Issareth, is a Calaryn, a dying race of all men, no women. They live to 200 and are reborn when a willing human woman, usually a wife, agrees to absorb their soul and rebirth them. As children they appear human, until puberty when their Calaryn genes take over and their wife-mother guides them through their changes.

Bright Morn's mother died in childbirth leaving an unstable aunt to raise him. At nineteen he was on his own, not understanding what it was to be a Calaryn. He had exceptional abilities, could feel and know what was around him, small wounds healed themselves, his eyes changed and colors ran under his skin. As he grew closer to his 30th birthday, he began reliving memories from past lives.

He was found one night, near death after a street fight, by Old God, a Calaryn close to the end of his 200 years, seeking the bloody history of the Calaryns, how they came to be and what their purpose was in the world. A quest Morn was happy to join.

This is Volume One (seven are complete) of a multi-volume story inspired by the Wuxia sagas from China: tales of near superhuman warriors with skills touched by legend and truth. Interwoven into Morn's story are the memories of his past lives and who he was, whether a simple army grunt, a fugitive, or a king. This is Morn's first step on his journey through a fictional land spanning dozens of dynasties.

Scholar, Warrior, highly skilled martial artist and arrogantly humble.

He, like Calaryns, of which Bright Morn is, looks human. And everything in his background says he is but, after a battle he was found under the clothing of a Calaryn who had died, face down, on top of him after a fall. Calaryn's bodies dissipate when they die, their souls being absorbed by the nearest (willing) female who will then bring them back into the world with their birth. Normally, on a battlefield if a Calaryn dies he dissipates and, with the majority of the soldiers around him being male, does not find a host so is gone forever. Tzu, now is showing signs of possibly turning into a Calaryn which means there might be something in his background from one of his ancestors that actually gives him some unknown Calaryn dna.

This is the flipbook created by a group of writers I work with called Vella Off Grid. We all met doing Amazon Kindle Vella serials and found that we like to try different methods of promoting our work that aren’t the same as what everyone else is using. We have one big rule in the group, no matter how crazy an idea is, none can object to it. If we don’t like it, we just move one, but ideally we’ll still check it out.

Although catalogues aren’t new by any means, there aren’t that many writers using them. I’ve used them for my own work but this is the first time we’ve used it for all 11 writers.
