Yo, let me just X-post a little here real quick:
Before we had supports we knew that Soleil couldn't marry a chick. At this point I thought it was fair to assume she was straight. Reasonable enough - we assume this of just about everyone, right? Sure, it's not bulletproof but it's an educated guess.
Then we get some supports.
We look at them, oh, she likes girl, eh? She . . . Really likes girls.
I read those vague "I really like girls" type supports first - ones that never really screamed, "Hey I want to fuck a girl." and instead said, "Hey. Girls are cute. I like girls."
At this point I thought, "Oh, okay maybe she just likes girls and guys, maybe she doesn't like girls romantically."
It was clear enough though that she does like guys. She marries them, she seems quite happy with them no less. She even tries to get a bit frisky with MaMU in their S.
Then I saw her support with Foleo, she tells Foleo she prefers girls romantically.
At this point it's clear enough that she's bisexual, short of just lying to Foleo for some reason.
Then I read the MaMU support. It was . . . Weird, yes.
But ultimately it made clear that Soleil is lightheaded and such around cute girls - this helps explain why she has no S supports with girls.
I think that the "problems" of this support come down to people being really defensive and the potential of her fainting for cute girls symbolically being her interest in girls just kind of making people get up in arms over something that's ultimately just a misunderstanding.
Kamui: I managed to get my hands on a kind of magic powder… I’m really sorry, but a little while ago, I poured some of it into your drink. The person who drinks that powder… somehow becomes able to see other people as the gender opposite what they actually are!
While, yes, this is just kind of stupid and unnecessary (to do it without Soleil's knowledge) that's not really anything more than Kamui trying to do something nice but being a dumbass while doing so because he's a naive dumbass. (Lots of emphasis on the dumbass part)
It's not this big thing of Kamui trying to impose his will against Soleil's sexuality or some shit. Y'know?
So anyway, she faints for cute girls and this is only worked towards being solved in her MaMU support which inevitably ends in them getting married, so this version of Soleil has no chance of getting with a girl.
So lets talk more about that, why she has no S support with girls. Another reason why she lacks S supports is, well, there's no other lesbians aside from Blarja and FeMU.
She has no support with Blarja (I think! I tried looking, didn't find one. Please correct me if I'm wrong.)
But wait - she has a support with FeMU and of course we know FeMU's bisexual.
So what's the deal, here?
Why can't these two get together?
Why not? Why is it that a girl who likes girls romantically can't get with a bisexual?
To me . . . These questions are weird.
It's very much, "Hey, gay guy, I have a gay friend, would you like to meet him. You're both gay, you'd be perfect together!"
Not everyone's going to date everyone just because they like each other's gender.
We notice that despite the flirting in Soleil's supports with FeMU she's never fainting or anything like that.
For that fact it's fair enough to assume Soleil just isn't that into FeMU.
So while we still could say, "it'd be nice if they had a S support together." and that's true enough, Soleil doesn't needan S support with a girl to be a complete character.
She's really not hurt by it at all. Her sexuality remains the same regardless of if she does or doesn't have an S support and I think the fact that a bisexual character doesn't find love with one of the genders they like . . . Well, it makes a lot of sense.
Beyond just her fainting and all that jazz, you're looking at a much smaller pool of people when you're looking at your own gender for partners, not finding someone who really appeals to you from that gender (or them not finding you appealing to that extent) really resonates with me anyway.
It also kind of makes me think, Soleil likes girls so much and she really wants to flirt with them and such . . . Now, this could easily just be her taking after her father and all but doesn't it also fit that a girl that can't seem to find love with a girl would get kind of uppity and really want to find that actively, flirting with girls and such? I don't take her as desperate to find a girl but eh, wouldn't be too much of a twist for her personality largely rooting from the fact that she likes girls but can't seem to find one that works well with her.
In any case - they didn't handle things poorly for the FeMU support.
They don't build it up as Soleil getting interesting in FeMU or she'd be reacting differently to FeMU. She'd be getting lightheaded and whatnot.
Here's another thing about Soleil, kind of just an aside really. In her FeMU support and Siegbert support she expresses that she doesn't really care if people watch her change.
To me that lack of hoot giving shows that Soleil's definitely quite forward about her body and doesn't get hung up on that sort of thing - kind of "liberated" and whatnot, fits the flirtatious personality she has. I like it.
She also expresses an interest but lack of talent in her dancing in many supports. She has a personality, she has more to her than "GIRLSS!" but . . . We really see her taken that way, and rightfully so maybe since she does focus a bit too much on girls, as a character she can be a bit too boring for that fact.
Anyway, I don't know if she has more supports (I'd certainly imagine she does and hope so) but just from what I've read so far?
Yeah, it's not outstanding but it's not terrible because of how her sexuality is handled, it's not an affront to bisexauls. She works just fine.
I dislike this idea that a character needs a same sex S support just to make them whole, as if Soleil is somehow less of a bisexual for the fact that she can't marry a girl.
I can understand people not finding it quite as satisfying but satisfaction's not always the end goal of a character. If anything her lack of an S support with a girl helps to portray something that people'd rather not talk about - finding someone of your own gender who you can really fall in love with? That's actually really fucking hard. It's already hard when you've got a big pool of people of the opposite gender, it's a lot harder when you're fishing in a pond instead of an ocean.
I dislike the fact that people tried for awhile to say she was a lesbian just because she had a more active interest in women, especially despite her S supports with men.
I dislike how in general her sexuality has been poked at and called bad writing despite being perfectly reasonable - just misunderstood.
I really just hate watching people try to, instead of trying to understand her sexuality say stupid crap like she's a botched lesbian.
She's a poorly written character. We get it. No, Nintendo doesn't hate gays they just wrote a shitty character. There's 30 other characters in the game that are pretty great so can we please talk about them? ALSO 99% of the people making a huge fucking deal about this will never even experience the JP supports because there is literally no chance in hell these supports aren't going to be changed when the game gets localized.
Does any of this excuse MaMU from powdering Soleil’s drink? No, it does not. He’s a moron who has no idea what’s actually acceptable, but it’s important to note that he is NOT trying to sexually assault her or make her fall in love with him through some misguided attempt to make her straight.
Nintendo actually made homosexual marriages a thing in this game, and have multiple openly homosexual characters. Why are people still displeased at this?
