My cat Meatball is two years and some months old and every day I witness him growing into a serviceable cat and further from demonic kitten mode. Sometimes we can nap together without violence. He has learned that he loves head and neck scratches. He will let me hold him sometimes and pet him, other times he protest meows and jumps away. Overall we're making progress
Therapy does not work for everyone for a long list of reasons, but therapy doesn't work for assholes for specific reasons. If you lack the ability to self reflect, if you have low insight, if you take no accountability, if you don't want to embrace change, if you're afraid to be vulnerable, if you can't delay an emotional reaction for a little while in order to be truly curious about the effect you have on others, you're cooked in a therapy setting. I see you all telling every asshole you know to "go to therapy." Babe those people do not have the capacity or self motivation to better themselves. What you're doing is creating a headache for a therapist

My dad is about to go through an enormous surgery for colon cancer, which I learned against my will. All of the flying monkeys are begging me to "self reflect and reach out to him" as if it's my fault he has such a bad relationship with me. I considered reaching out, but even facing the flying monkeys is so incredibly invalidating and hateful. If I speak my mind, I would damn him to hell. I have no kindness in me for the man, and I hope his surgery goes well but these people need to learn that I am not the fawning trapped and timid person I used to be
It's so lonely to have nobody in your family that can even react normally to you talking about trauma. They darvo, they play devil's advocate, they accuse you of deserving it, they invalidate and redirect the conversation to their own suffering but not a single person capable of saying "Dang that sucks" "shit that's crazy" "sorry that happened"
Every single one of my immediate family members is either an abuser or so so so terrifically self absorbed that they offer zero comfort in difficult times. The benefit of the doubt doesn't exist because treating me with the kindness you would extend to a stranger undermines their narrative of being the hardest suffering person in the family. People who have felt an ounce of familial kindness will not understand this, but sometimes you have to cut off the narcissistic family system because it's infinitely more dangerous to live among them than to be alone

Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.
