“I don’t think so. Sure… perhaps if we’re talking about all the silly customs of Men I had to go through when I tried to adapt to their way of life. Had my wife not been one of them, I doubt I would’ve made any contact with mortals on my own.”

Gimli: Have you ever had an opinion about someone that turned out to be completely wrong?

“I see where you are trying to take this conversation. Very well. I can admit it when I have been wrong. Perhaps you, my dear Firie, are not as annoying as I first perceived.

Legolas: What has been your most unlikely friendship, and did it last?

“Oh, it has to be the friendship between me and my late wife’s late brother. He was… eccentric, loud and full of life. Our bond was strong and our friendship lasted until the day he, too, took his final breath.”

Celebrían: Have you ever done something that took a turn for the worse that you weren’t prepared for?

“Well obviously marrying my wife has to qualify. At first everything was perfect, then…she died. If that is not a turn for the worse then…I don’t know what is. And no, I was not prepared for it even though I knew it would happen eventually.

Éomer: What are the things you consider to be worth fighting the system for?

“Love. Though with my newly found wisdom I-… I wouldn’t wish anyone to go through the same kind of agony I’v felt, yet I would wish everyone to enjoy the same kind of happiness I had.

Théoden: When have you been wrong but refused to see it?

“Perhaps… perhaps I should not have rushed to marriage with Ithilwen. It pains me to say this, but… Maybe if I had not married her, things would be-… I would be different - less…bitter.

Sauron: What is your greatest weakness?

“Currently or overall? I don’t know. What is it that makes me weak? My ability to feel? My stubbornness that prevents me from letting go?”

Maglor: Do you believe in redemption?

“I do, though at times I do wonder if…some are just too far gone to be granted redemption. Do they even deserve it?”

Lúthien: Do societal norms exist to be broken?

“No. They don’t exist to be broken, it is not their purpose, but they can be broken when needed.”

Thror: Do you value wealth?

“No. Wealth is not where happiness is.”

Thráin: Do you consider yourself a selfish person?

“I suppose I am, though...I wasn’t always like this. Do I regret becoming this... person I am now? Perhaps. Perhaps not. I do feel I am entitled to be a little self-centered considering that...I have to make it on my own from now on.

Dwalin: Do you have any hobbies?

“I used to have a few. Dancing, occasional singing and cooking as well. Plants and herbs and potions and poisons are the only hobby I have left and I’d say these days they are a part of my profession rather than a hobby.

Fili: Do you have a good smile?

“I like to think I did have...there’s just not much to smile for these days.”

“I can not let such trivial things to get in the way of my research.” Truth was, the elf had no idea when he had eaten. How many hours had it been since his last meal? Or was it days already? It was not like this was anything new. Ever since he had been left by himself, Sadron had noticed his appetite evading him quite often. What point was there to eat or to sleep? What point was there in anything at all?

Not that he would be able to get any proper sleep there, for the memory of his wife would only continue to haunt him there as the empty space beside him reminded him of his loss.

"Do you remember anything from last night?"

”Do I look like I do?” The only thing remaining from the dark haze Sadron called night, was the ache in his limbs and the dizziness clouding his mind. “If you know more than you let on, I advice you to spill your little secrets.” he hissed, lips pursed as he tried to recall last night’s events. He could not even tell when he had retired for the night or if he had slipped into bed on his own accords. A valet might have taken care of that. Or Galion, or Legolas even. And there was seemingly no explanation to why his memory was failing him. "Get the healers." he ordered, turning away to ponder over this most unpleasant mystery.

"My king, there is no need for healers. Though it seems I do have to apologize. My herbal infusion might have been more potent than I thought. You see, my liege, you woke up last night, unable to sleep. You then requested my help and before I let you drink what I had brewed, I did warn you of the possible side-effects, one of which is memory loss. I shall make sure next time you will remember those few hours before drinking the infusion."

Sadron bowed, almost sheepishly, which - given his usual insolence - was a rare sight.

"But I do take it you slept without any disturbance?"

"Yours or mine?" There is a lot to be found in Sadron’s eyes, not matter how much the depth tried to remain shut like a gate and the king’s eyes were merciless in their onslaught, plundering for any spark they may find in the other’s gaze. Did he not have a wife once? The Noldo never spoke of it, but Elrond did in a most secretive letter. They shared this fate apparently, a spouse lost leaving an emptiness behind hard to fill. Why did Sadron choose a blossom that, no matter how enticing and beautiful, was doomed to wither and end? Thranduil was tempted to give Elrond away, to reveal he knew more than the poison master ought to know. "Tell me more."

As he heard the Elvenking's first question, something in the way Sadron held himself changed. There was a small flicker in his eyes, a moment of weakness caused by the surprise at such a sudden inquiry which led to a pain-filled gasp recognized as such only by those who knew how it felt to lose the one you loved the most. It was all there for a fleeting moment: the grief, the pain, the anger too...until there was nothing left but an ellon who had lost half of his fëa - and perhaps himself as well.

The very next moment it was all hidden again behind strong walls the poison master had learnt to build during all these years that had just flown by like they had never even existed. This was the first time Sadron had tried to make it known he shared the King's predicament - that he understood and wished to be understood as well. Yet now, like the coward he was, he hid again.

"I can't..." His voice was but a whisper, scared and shaken, as if at any given moment he would be struck down by feelings that were all too familiar to him. "But I do know of such pain..." His usual defiance, the smug pride was gone and instead of challenging the king, Sadron seemed to avoid all eye contact.

With Sadron, it was always a thin line between pleasure over him being achieving and mindful of the king’s orders and mild anger whenever he acted out of line in an overdose of confidence. Yes, he had saved the prince’s life, there was no better way to gain the King’s favour. But Thranduil grumbled as they sat in his tub together, in his private quarters. It was bizarre. They did not even sleep together here, their intercourse always enjoyed elsewhere. “While you are already here, make yourself useful.” He handed the noldorin potionmaster a vial of oil and turned, his request obvious.

The situation was strange. So strange in fact that for the first time Sadron did not feel the need to boost up his own ego and test the king's patience in any way. He took the vial and held it in his hand for a brief moment - all the while he was staring and admiring the king's bare back - before he laid it down again and wrapped his arms gently around Thranduil.

In any other given moment it might have seemed that he had given to his old habits, but there was something in his touch that made it all different. Not once was his grip hard, not for a second did he force Thranduil to react to it. Carefully, Sadron pressed his lips against the other's neck.

"Thank you," he whispered and in his voice was something that had never been heard before: insecurity, vulnerability, sentimentality. "Thank you for giving me a reason to live."

They had insisted that there was no need for a formal dinner to greet their arrival in Rivendell, but the Elves had dismissed the thing and carried on with their preparations. Firie thought they just liked to hold events that called for good food and music to be shared in company, and that one reason was as good as the other.

For the night, she had been given a dress by an attendant in the palace, since their host had correctly assumed none of her party had packed proper clothes for a formal event. The long skirt felt odd, and more often than not, Firie got her legs caught in it and stumbled. Upon reaching the dining hall, however, a familiar face was soon spotted, although an eyebrow soon raised in a surprised yet very skeptical look. What was Sadron wearing?

His robes were longer, of deep dark blues decorated with light grey and silver; definitely not the kind of attire he usually wore. Was he dressed fancily for the evening? The girl could not help but approach him, trying not to let her amusement show. “Good evening, sir Sadron,” the grin on her lips was visible as her vivacious gaze landed on him. “My, so handsome tonight. Is it a special event? Trying to impress someone specific?”

There was no joy in Sadron's eyes when he turned to see who was speaking to him. Though he might have been dressed fancy, he clearly did not seem to share the celebratory mood every other elf in Rivendell was feeling. Sadron did not know how long it had been since he had joined any kind of festivities last. He knew what the occasion had been - the anniversary of his wedding - yet the time that lay between that particular moment in the past and the very moment in present was a mystery. What reason he had to celebrate anyway?

...and then there was this girl - this mortal girl - mocking him. "Most definitely not," was his short answer. "Someone merely thought this might do me good yet I fail to feel the benefits of such a feast."
