7 notes on seeing Rómeó és Júlia
So yeah I kinda ended up watching the musical Rómeó és Júlia for the 15th time, which is of cause dumb and crazy but alsoo was an excellent idea since it was one of the best performances I have seen so far and I thought I’d share some of my favourite details:
1. During “Verona” Tybalt passing Mercutio and ruffling Mercutio’s hair to annoy the “boy” ( it worked well with the considerable age difference between Mercutio and Tybalt in that performance, so a bit lile the master of the field trying to show the youngster his place)
2. When Romeo and Juliet first meet at the ball and start to flirt and dance, Mercutio literally drops everything (in this particular case the girl he was flirting with) and rushes over to see what his friend is up to. Seeing that Romeo is falling in love AGAIN he grabs Benvolio and starts to passionately dance with him, mimicking Romeo and Juliet.
3.Tybalt being shown as constantly battling his temper during the show. He easily gets angry and agressive but…he doesn’t want to. He again and again tries to stay calm, not to loose his temper. He knows what his great weakness is and that he is too easy ruled by his anger but he doesn’t want this. (this of course makes it the more tragic when we see where his anger leads)
4.Mercutio being all playful during the duel. For him it is still a game, he enjoys the taunting and fighting, not realising that Tybalt is totally crazed with anger by now. There is no real hatred or malice in him. He only realises that it is not a game anymore the second he sees the knife in Tybalt’s hand-and sees the oblivious Romeo running right into the zone of danger. Instead of escaping himself he consciously chooses to push Romeo to safety. We hear him gasp in pain as the kife pierces him.
5. Mercutio starting his dying scene as angry and sarcastically funny, but his absolute terror and fear of death keep showing. He does not want to die. He is terrified of dying. Death was never something he thought about and now he has to go and he just does not want to. As he shouted his final curse on both families tears ran down his face, and yet he died in Romeo’s arms, trying to stroke his friend’s cheek.
6. Romeo refusing to let go of Mercutio’s corpse while he is accused of murdering Tybalt and his fate is debated. But he just doesn’t care. Instead he keeps checking for a pulse or heartbeat over and over again, till realising there really is none. Then he takes his dead friend’s hand into his and holds it.
7.Romeo thinking about commiting suicide later on in the same scene as the debate on how the killing of Tybalt continues. He holds the knife thinking about just stabbing himself and Benvolio stands next to him- doing nothing. He does not try to stop Romeo from killing himself. He is not sure if he should do so. He is not sure if it would be the best thing to keep his friend from suicide right then. Only when Romeo himself drops the knife he approaches him, hugs him and comforts him.
Aaaand by that point I was basically dead on the inside as well and while there were manymore great bits I’ll leave it at this.
