mini hyperspecific fic rec list for TIME TRAVELLING SHANE bc i have now read three fics with this concept and i love each of them uniquely and dearly.

Day 90 by @greatcomets which is shane time looping after his ep5 accident. this fic is DELICIOUS it is such fantastic shane character study and uses his anxiety+comfort with routine in such wonderful ways. its also funny and suicidal and awkward and romantic in the best time loop ways.

circle back season by an anonymous author on ao3. i read this twice in a row as a truly great time travel story deserves. 18 year old shane timejumps into ep6 shane's present, and both of them have to explain this to ilya. it is SO beautiful and i can honestly say it gave me a new perspective on canon shane's anxiety, in a really fun way. and ilya is adorableeeee in this absolutely gone to pieces over baby shane which i find very relatable #iwishiknewyouwhenyouwere8

cut to the feeling by @boxboxlewis which is also 18 year old shane time jumping, but this time to 2026 when shilya are RETIRED and have a BABY which is very SHOCKING for the shane who just got out of the gym scene!! in these two fics i really love how the different points they pluck shane out of change his perspective so much, and here again shane's anxiety and control issues are played with so well. i love how resourceful he is in this fic lol. also some very sexy virginity "roleplay" which i adored.

in general i think time travel is a fantastic way to play in this genre space bc each of these fics futzes with the concept of the character knowing what kind of story theyre in. if shane knows hes in a romance, in a world with his happy ending, does that change anything about his choices? or is the whole point that his choices were the right ones all along, bc they are the choices that lead to love? its the opposite of what if x could only be watched once; what if the characters themselves see the track and must still make the active choice to run along it? its also a great place to put a character with anxiety; how do you challenge someone who agonizes over the "right" way to do things? by giving them that exact opportunity! truly three perfect fics that i am really enjoying putting in conversation with each other. thank you to these authors!!!

Spoilers for The Sunbearer Trials

Alright, since Celestial Monsters cover just got released, gonna share some theories I have, mostly centered around Xio.

•Xio’s power is vengeance due to his parent being Venganza and he wears a bracelet for good luck to either evade Mala Suerte’s powers or try and prevent his own from affecting people.

•When people’s eyes go black is Xio’s powers affecting them, Ocelo losing it because Teo taunted them and they wanted revenge, Aurestela attacking Teo cause she’s angry at him for keeping Aurelio’s attention, Atzi angry she’s losing, Xochi upset she didn’t get to the stones in time. Along with that, Xio tells the story of how when a couple girls in his class were making fun of his hair they both ended up getting really bad lice and having to shave their heads, Xio wanted revenge so it happened. His powers make bad things happen to people he’s upset at and causes people around him to become consumed with a want for vengeance.

•Throughout the book it’s hinted repeatedly that Xio is not Mala Suerte’s son. It’s pointed out that he’s the only one of the kid’s who doesn’t have straight black hair, during the second to last trial the floor tiles have Venganza’s symbol on them, Xio doesn’t go to see a doctor about transitioning.

•Xio doesn’t medically transition because his blood is black and it’d give away that he’s an obsidian.

•Xio was trying to lose the trials on purpose so he can free the obsidians, but his powers affecting the other contestants was making it harder since the trials search the hearts of a person and Xio is failing to keep them from becoming spiteful and vengeful.
