The Rasa Pair Tag Game

This game was thought up by @siathawisit but it made me so excited I had to kick it off asap!!

Rules: The rasas are South Asian aesthetic categories that remain influential in the regions dramas and art (read more on the wikipedia article here). Literally, it’s the dominant “flavor” of a work or performance. For the game, pick a pair that represents each rasa to you. You can choose whether you want to do CP pairings or just characters. No need to explain unless you feel like it. Then tag 5 friends to find out their flavors of love.

Sringara (शृङ्गारः): Romance, Love, Beauty, Eroticism

The prettiest couple hitting every romantic melodrama note perfectly. Pearlpeak have those yaoi proportions to sell them to the BL crowd but the kind of breathless performances to make the sappiest most familiar plot-lines feel revelatory and astoundingly sensual.

Hasya (हास्यं): Laughter, Mirth, Comedy

Gone but not forgotten. Whether in 2gether or Tonhon Chonlatee, they were always wonderful and welcome goobers #mygoobers

Raudram (रौद्रं): Fury, Anger

Whether Daou is tearing a new one for rude and invasive people on the Internet or Offroad is giving him that piercing glance from the side of the stage when he’s crossed a line, this pair knows exactly how to channel their anger, and they can make it so damn compelling on screen. They are a lesson in how anger can play a meaningful part in love—protectiveness, possessiveness, power play, and more. You’ll want someone to be angry with you after you spend time with DaouOffroad.

Karuṇā (करुणा): Compassion, Mercy, Spiritual Longing, Sorrow

No pair has managed to convey such desperate soul-searching in multiple roles, and even their CP brand is laced with a kind of pessimism unlike any other pairing (40 fans and a divorce era). They just hurt so good.

Bībhatsa (बीभत्सं): Disgust, Aversion, Repulsion

I wanted to pick a CP from the early days of sex comedy BLs like Make It Right, but I don’t know much about the koojin brand outside of the shows and they were all lacking in gifs (but NiceAof, know that I thought about Lukmo falling for the smell of Yok’s bowel movements in MIR!). SurfJava on screen and off are giving the old boyish shenanigans, though. Their love-language seems like fart jokes and Tom and Jerry cartoon violence. They’d call each other slurs as an insult and a term of endearment.

Bhayanaka (भयानकं): Horror, Terror, Overwhelm

Really this award should just go to Bible on his own. His partners just have to deal with the malevolent aura his persona comes with (although he seems like a perfectly nice guy!). I just don't think it's a Bible series until he has blood on his face tbh. Luckily, Jes has been more than game for embracing the avant-dark side. His costumes the past two halloweens were beetlejuice and the joker. Meanwhile, Bible just did a live while sharpening his personal knife collection. I rest my case.

Vīram (वीरं): Heroism, Energy, Adventure

MaxTul are forerunners, game-changers, bold, brash, advocates, the list goes on, and fit enough to do their own stunts if they wanted. Even their proposals have an little extra dose of adventure.

Adbhutam (अद्भुतं): Awe, Wonder, Amazement

DMD in general likes to brand on a pretty seme who stays in constant awe of a beautiful uke—no complaints! But Keng and Namping take the other-worldly wonder to another level. They both have an aura of perfect composure, and the slow-mo and multiple lives (all the way back to time immemorial) storyline throughout khemjira certainly built on how majestic can appear. Watching them, you feel like you’re watching two heavenly creatures wrap their wings around each other.

Santam (शान्तरस): Peace, Tranquility, Calm

Perhaps it's being in the cast of chaos around them that BeverTonliew seem especially pacific in comparison. Still, their characters and their fanservice have a steady and steadfast quality to them, quiet but adoring. We all adore the friction-filled sparks and drama of Elizabeth Bennett and Darcy, but what about the subtle longings of Anne Elliott and Wentworth or Fanny Price and Edmund? It takes special kinds of actors to bring the tranquil love of shy and virtuous romantic leads to life as compellingly as Bever and Tonliew did.

This is just meant as an exercise in thinking with different aesthetic categories. If anyone wants an overview of how the theory actually works in Sanskrit poetics/dramaturgy, here's a good overview:

I think this is a useful paradigm to keep in mind while watching more lakorn-styled Thai series. The actual transmission of these ideas is a little complicated and I won't bore you with that, but this is ultimately the sort of thing that all that melodrama is aimed at -- not a false representation of reality but an emotional experience more intense than the muddle of daily life.

That girl, her brother, and my kid played for about 2 hours straight at full volume. Her dad was so thrilled that he kept offering to buy me food. And at one point I might've caught a glimpse of her mom having a brief happy cry in the hallway, but if I did, I pretended i didn't.

When I was at the natural history museum, the fossil section had stickers on the glass to engage children - things like "Flap your arms like a pterodactyl" or "Measure your hand against the mosasaurus." However the first of these I encountered, which I found alarming and threatening without context, was a sticker reading "Struggle like you are stuck in a tar pit"

I haven't read the book, but was Kongdech from northeastern Thailand (Isan), especially somewhere around Sakon Nakhon Province or neighboring provinces like Nakhon Phanom?

The line about him saying, "Everyone is Catholic in my community," really stood out to me. That's unusual in Thailand overall, since more than 90% of the country is Buddhist. However, there are a few villages and districts in the northeast where Catholicism became deeply rooted and entire communities are Catholic.

His mother also mentioned that the trip took "eight hours to Bangkok." In the 1990s, an overnight bus ride from rural Isan to Bangkok commonly took around 8–12 hours, depending on the province and road conditions. Catholic missions in northeastern Thailand historically built schools, boarding facilities, and seminaries. For many poor rural families, education through the Church was one of the few paths to social mobility. These communities were also (and often still are) tightly knit and heavily dependent on mutual support networks.

So if I had to place Kong on a map, my ranking would be:

1. Tha Rae (most likely)

2. Another Catholic village in Sakon Nakhon Province

3. A Catholic community in Nakhon Phanom Province near the Laos border

4. Another Isan Catholic settlement connected to French missionary history

Tha Rae, Sakon Nakhon, is especially interesting because it is famous for being the largest Catholic community in Thailand. It was established in the late nineteenth century through the work of French missionaries and Vietnamese Catholic migrants who settled in the area. Even today, it is known for its large Catholic population, historic church, and elaborate Christmas celebrations. In a place like Tha Rae, a boy saying, "Everybody back home is Catholic," would actually sound completely realistic.

The history behind this is fascinating. Catholicism first arrived in Siam during the sixteenth century through Portuguese missionaries who followed early European trade routes into Southeast Asia. Later, French missionaries from the Paris Foreign Missions Society became much more influential. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, they established churches, schools, orphanages, clinics, and seminaries across the region.

The northeast became a particularly important center for Catholicism because of its location along the Mekong River and its connections to Laos and Vietnam. Missionaries worked among Lao-speaking communities in Isan and also among Vietnamese Catholics who migrated into the area, especially during periods of persecution and political instability in Vietnam. Over time, some villages converted collectively, and Catholicism became part of local community identity rather than simply an individual religion. That's why many of Thailand's strongest Catholic communities today are found not in Bangkok, but in provinces such as:

Sakon Nakhon

Nakhon Phanom

Mukdahan

parts of Udon Thani

The poverty detail also feels historically accurate. The line about getting an ID card and a place to study is particularly interesting. If the story is set in 1996, that was before much of rural northeastern Thailand experienced the economic improvements of the 2000s. Many Catholic communities near the Laos border were farming villages where families depended on rice cultivation, seasonal labor, and remittances from relatives working elsewhere.

Church scholarships and boarding schools genuinely changed lives because they could provide:

education

housing

meals

religious training

access to official documents and administrative support

and sometimes a pathway toward the priesthood

The idea of a mother proudly sending her son to a seminary because it guaranteed an education, stable living conditions, and future opportunities would have been very believable for that time and place.

the scene of Tanrak as a small child and needing to believe in heaven because he lost his parents is so cutting.

one of the hardest things for me as an adult who was raised in catholicism and now chooses not to raise my own children that way is trying to sit with them with the ideas of death and mortality. experiencing this made it so obvious to me why organized religions that focus on the afterlife concept are still so appealing. who wants to accept that it's possible we just stop existing?

when they come to me struggling with this I do my best to give them solace and support and understanding without glossing over what I believe to be true. when they go to relatives or talk with friends who hold christian beliefs and they tell them about heaven, my kids instantly chose to believe that.

when they talk about faith in this drama I keep thinking how comforting is certainty...
