Saffron Wave

3000 years ago, a girl lived on an island. She made friends, fell in love, and was tasked with being the first person to save the world from evil. Nephele is a young woman living in 1629 BCE on Minoan Crete. She lives a simple life, fishing and farming her small plot of land to sustain herself. Life is completely upended by a mysterious woman appearing, giving her a magic pendant, and being told to defend the island from the Sea People. Is Nephele up to the task?

Hello! Welcome to the official blog for Saffron Wave, a historical magical girl comic!

Set 3000 years ago on ancient Crete, history and mythology combine in this tale of the world's first magical girl.

Nephele lives a life of uneventful solitude until her world is completely upended by strange monsters from the sea and an even stranger woman giving her magic powers. Nephele takes to the task with her new companions, unaware that she's being caught up in a personal conflict between the gods that's been dragging on for millennia.

Rink aka kellerybird is a digital illustrator from Northern California. With a life-long love of history and magical girls, its only natural that the two would combine into this passion project.

I wanted to wait until the new site was built but I can't wait any longer! I know I’ve been really bad about sharing updates & such here but I’m going to be better and I’m kicking that off with some fantastic news!

In case you just completely glossed over the title & shiny sparkly announcement image, Saffron Wave has joined the Spiderforest Webcomic Collective!

This has been a goal of mine for I don't even know how long, several years at least, and last month I got the amazing news that my comic was accepted into the collective!

Now, this does mean there will be some slight (very slight) changes going forward.

First, we're in the midst of building a new site for Saffron Wave that's hosted through the collective. This new site will become the main site for the comic and ComicFury will become the only mirror as of right now. One of the requirements for joining SF is that the new site be at least one update ahead of any mirrors; I haven't fully decided yet if I'm just going to skip a week here or do a double update on the new site (it really depends how many pages I can get done by the time the new site is finished). Patreon will still get updates as soon as they're done, but any public sites are beholden to this rule so CF will be at least one update behind going forward.

As of right now the estimated date for completing the new site is mid-September, but once we have a more clear idea of when it'll be done I can give a definitive time frame for what kind of update delay I'll be doing & when it will happen.

Second, I'll be changing the look of this site to something simpler, I updated the layout here in the hopes of having a self-hosted site look like this so we'll be transferring this design layout to the new site. To avoid confusion, I'll be really streamlining things here. All the extra pages and everything will still be up, but this site will just have a simpler look.

That's really all that will affect the comic here, anything else going forward will mostly just affect me as a creator, given I now have some small responsibilities & such to the collective. But on the other hand, I get to interact with a ton of cool webcomic creators and will even have the chance to participate in group activities in the future!

I'm forever grateful for you all sticking with me on this wild webcomic journey, and I hope you'll continue to follow me/the comic into the future.

Normally, I don't like to make "pretty girls being pretty" type of art I'd rather draw pretty men instead, but I had this image of Nephele from @saffron-wave webcomic in my head, so now it's on paper, and also digitalized.

Saffron Wave returns in 2024!

Hey there, been a while, hasn't it?

Sorry for the silence, but I've been dealing with a lot of crap the past half-year or so and now that life's finally settling down I can direct more energy to comics again~! If you'd like the details, you can check out this video where I explain why I've been gone.

While I've been on this break I've been doing some serious retconning and improvements for Saffron Wave.

The first big improvement is fixing the first half of chapter 1. The original pages weren't meant to be posted so the writing was really weak and didn't establish the story in the way I wanted. This has been fixed now, with new writing + new art~

The next improvement is updating the look of the website! This has been a bit of an on-going process behind the scenes, but it's almost ready and I should have that up and running by the end of the month.

The last major thing is going to be fixing chapter 4. I was really struggling to stay on top of things last year, and all the crap life threw at me starting in the summer really took the wind out of my sails so I decided to take a huge step back and reassess what I wanted to do with the story going forward. I should be able to reuse a lot of the existing art, again it's the writing that needs fixing, so I'm hoping to have this done by spring so we can get back to regular weekly updates.

That said, you can check out the revised pages here! I'll try to remember to be more active here as well now that I'm getting my groove back.

So I’m really not doing well right now. Working graveyard shifts has really messed with me both physically and mentally and I’m not able to stay on top of updates (especially when I don’t know what day it is anymore).

Long story short I’m either not sleeping or sleeping too much, I’ve got next to no appetite anymore, and my now permanent state of exhaustion is making me overly irritable and snappy and it’s just not a good time over here right now.

So I’m taking some time off from updates, I don’t need the added pressure of trying to push out comic pages each week when I’m feeling as awful as I do. I feel a bit bad because I’ve already gone on hiatus once with this chapter and executing it has just been a nightmare overal with moving and everything, but for my own sanity I gotta take some more time away.

Fortunately I’ll be moved to a swing shift starting September 5 and won’t be doing overnight shifts anymore, but until then I just gotta put my well being first. I’m aiming to start updating again on September 13th for the main site and tapas, and on the 29th for Webtoon, but may have to push this back further depending how long it takes me to readjust to a normal sleep schedule.

I’ll still be working on stuff in the meantime, but I’m not going to stress about uploading pages each week for a little while.
