After years of inactivity and several major upheavals, the Sagan 4 Tumblr is back up and running! On this blog, we will provide updates and information on the Sagan 4 project and all of its spinoffs.

What is Sagan 4?

Sagan 4 is an alien planet ecosystem speculative evolution project originally started by Hydromancerx who was inspired by Carl Sagan’s video. It started on the Gaming Steve forum (Sept 2, 2006) as a project with a few hand selected artists. They were given a single cell organism called Protosagania to start with and challenged to evolve it into other forms of life. Sagan 4 is now populated with many species of flora and fauna all created by artists who love drawing and evolving creatures. Some of the life that has evolved has been Purple floras, Plents, Iron-based fauna, and so much more.

In 2016 the project went on hiatus, as the wiki was thought lost along with the archive of the submitted organisms. Fans of the project in 2019 created a revival of the project, dubbed Sagan 4 Beta, following a separate timeline that branched in early history. The original project was recovered in 2020 and relaunched under the new name Sagan 4 Alpha, and now both projects coexist as a shared community.

The Sagan 4 project now has it’s own website, forum, and wiki. The team has grown to include other artists and the life on Sagan 4 keeps evolving and changing. The website, forum and wiki are hosted and maintained by MNIDJM.

These spooky scary diagrams were created by @evolution-incarnate, a transgender artist with a unique skill in speculative biomechanics who has been helping us with anatomical elaborations on the project for several years now!

By the way, she's currently open for commissions (and could use the support)--so if you want some wacky speculative bones of your own, or other kinds of art for that matter (including 3D models, character designs, and furry artwork), you should check it out!

THE TIMELINE HAS FRACTURED: DREAMWORKS ANIMATION PARTS WAYS WITH SAGANITES

Hollywood, CA – In a turn of events as dramatic as the film’s own time-traveling narrative, DreamWorks Animation has announced that Saganites will no longer be moving forward due to irreconcilable cast conflicts. What was set to be an ambitious sci-fi epic has found itself entangled in a web of creative differences and behind-the-scenes turmoil.

While the cosmic battle against The Delta Factor was meant to play out on screen, tensions among key cast members created an off-screen standoff that no amount of time travel could resolve. Sources close to the production cite ongoing disputes over character direction, contract negotiations, and a particularly intense debate over the portrayal of the Sagon— whose unsettling intensity and method-acting approach reportedly left co-stars and crew members deeply uncomfortable.

Despite the project’s unfortunate collapse in this timeline, DreamWorks remains committed to bringing innovative and boundary-pushing stories to life. While Saganites may never reach theaters, its vision of alien worlds and existential adventure will live on in the imaginations of those who dared to dream it.

To the fans who awaited this journey, we thank you for your enthusiasm. The saga may have ended here, but in another reality, perhaps Saganites soars on.

Today is Sagan 4's 18th anniversary! And…our last video was about our 17th anniversary! We can't leave our subscribers hanging forever, so we decided this was the perfect time to make another one. In this video, we showcase some fanart and go over some important events from the past year, as well as some future plans for the YouTube channel.

Sketch of a ghost capiri, an extinct pentapode which once wandered the rocky scrublands of what is now Barlowe. This one was a bit more of a challenge, since the species comes from a time when weirdness was favored over plausibility...resulting in a build-up of anatomical mistakes through its ancestry that made a mess of what the creator of this species, Arctic, had to work with when he made it. Now, we know that capiri legs are actually forelimbs, not hindlimbs--which helped a ton in reconstructing this funky little omnivore.

Fanart, Memes, and Spore Creations Wanted for Upcoming Anniversary Video

Hello everyone! As you now know, Sagan 4's 18th anniversary is coming up on September 2--there's nothing special about this particular year, but we want to start doing more for Sagan 4's anniversary so we can be better prepared for bigger events on landmarks such as the 20th.

We know it's a bit short notice, but we're hoping to be able to showcase some fanart for our anniversary video and blog posts! It can be something you already made (excluding approved/canon artwork), or you can make something specifically for this event. This includes not just drawings of creatures, but memes and Spore creations as well. It also doesn't need to be canonically accurate--Protosagania absorbing a microscopic cake? Impossible hybrid of a jedec and a waxface? Biblically accurate chimlopzock? All of these would be acceptable, too!

These are the only rules:

Must be Sagan 4-related

Must be worksafe and generally inoffensive

Must be your own work, and cannot be traced (excluding viral memes given a Sagan 4 spin (must be recorded on Know Your Meme, and not a candidate for deletion on the site))

Cannot be AI generated - as funny as Midjourney's failed attempt to give a shrew the right number of eyes might be, we cannot guarantee that training data was obtained ethically

Please post your fanart in the forum announcement thread, or find the corresponding fanart submission thread on the Discord server! To get into the video, you have until September 2 at 5:00 am GMT to submit your fanart; we'll try to fit anything posted after that into the blog post.

Sketch of a Russian clubtail, which, believe it or not, has nothing to do with Russia (instead being named for the Russ River, in which it lived). This tiny creature used its namesake tails to smack its predators. Though now extinct, it's actually more closely related to skuniks than to any other swarmers. Original species by Alwayswatching.

Sketch of spikeblades, an extinct true violetgrass with bioluminesent seeds that attracted nodents and other creatures which would store them for later use. Coming from a time when grazers were much more common on Sagan 4, spikeblades were razor sharp and could slice the mouths of creatures that try to eat them. Original species created by Allen.
