“ the view really is spectacular. ”

The air, crisp and sweet scent that carried the very colors of the horizon with it, caressed their skin softly through their clothes. The sun was setting, and the sky held pigments of pink and orange, with a faded touch of blue; in the middle of it all, a few sparks of bright green still remained, the scars of the breach. 

He stood at the battlements, leaning against the pale stone, glad to have his armor off and some decent clothing on for once. His feet tired of traveling, they were sore and calloused, but he did not care. He walked on clouds when she was near, and when she was not, he would walk even more just to be sure that she was. 

His heart could not contain it when he had heard just what she had been through, what she had to face, the close call she had in the fade. As easily as she had gotten out, she could have remained stuck in oblivion and the void of no return. There she stood, a pale gown that complimented every curve of her bodacious features, with a few bandages here and there on her arms, and the brightest smile a human could ever bear.

Fenris watched how she lit up at the sight of the mountains and snow. The light reflected off of them, giving the entire landscape a splash of warm colors, and yet nothing was as bright and colorful and sweet as she was. The sun was no match for the gold of her hair, the light of it was no description for the light in her soul. Nothing could amount to her grace.

When she spoke, Fenris smiled and looked at her, his heart thrumming with excitement and contentment. He walked many miles to reach Skyhold, and in that moment, was so grateful that he had, for he would never want to be anywhere but by her.

“Yes. Yes, it really is,” he replied, just above a whisper. 

He pushed himself away from the stone he was leaning on and he made his way over to her, reaching around her and placing his hand at her waist. She moved in close to him and he held her there. Fenris looked down at the arm by his chest, and at the bandages, and he pulled away momentarily. Seconds later, his hands reached over to her arm and began wrapping the familiar, worn red cloth around her bandages.

Fenris held her tightly by his side and they stood quietly against the parapet, enjoying the calm after the hurricanes they had faced together. Finally, they would be able to head home, wherever it may be, and they would get some rest before they had to attend to any duties. He didn’t care what came next. What he cared about was that the breach was closed, the danger was over, and he was never going to leave her again.

"Everything hurts..."

Fenris had one arm under Aura, holding her against his chest while he tried to figure out what to do with the other. She was torn and cut and bruised and he didn’t know what wound to cover first. He didn’t know if anything he did would stop the inevitable. There she was, destroyed and dying in his arms, and he couldn’t do anything about it. He couldn’t keep his promise, he couldn’t keep her safe.

“Aura... Tell me what to do, tell me, don’t...” he muttered, moving in close as he watched her suffer, until she suffered no more. “Don’t... go.”

Fenris was overwhelmed with emotion. Never had he thought this to actually happen. He had always expected risks and dangers, but his mind never dared to think of what would happen if he lost her; he was thrown unprepared towards it. Of all the deaths he had witnessed, of all the lives he had taken, of every soul that perished, hers was the truest, most genuine waste in death. 

When he found love in her, and when she gave him his heart, Fenris never expected to ever feel the amount of pain he had in the past. He would endure the branding of his lyrium markings a thousand times over to prevent the chance that a single hair on her head would be misplaced. Fenris would put her life ahead of his, protect her at all costs, yet in the end, it was her that took the final blow for him. It was her that sacrificed everything for him. 

She didn’t deserve it, not for him, not for a slave that had done nothing but cause destruction and death everywhere he went. A flower, a bird, a kind, wonderful soul like hers did not deserve the end it met for someone as tainted as him. It was for that reason, that Fenris tried his best not to hold her too tightly, for his rage and sorrow was beyond its limits. 

It was a moment nigh unending, but finally, Fenris gently laid her down, and rose to his feet. He cared not for the company that surrounded them, for the companions that took his place when he turned and left, he knew they’d give her the rest she deserved. He looked down momentarily, glancing at his arm, and he gently stroked the red cloth that carried the beautiful, intoxicating scent of the woman he loved. He didn’t need the sword he had thrown aside in the spur of the moment, nor the gauntlets he had taken off to hold sweet Aura. He did not need anything to rip out the heart of the man that did this to her, slowly, painfully, so that he may know half the pain that Fenris felt in losing Hawke. His Hawke.

Felras struggled against his bonds, trying to reach the other elf as he was dragged away by their captors. Magebane swam through his veins and prevented the use of his magic and the situation looked hopeless.

“Promise me that! Promise me that you’ll survive and get out of here!”

Fenris had to keep moving no matter what, amd he had found a small dirt road to follow. He knew it was dangerous, that there could likely be company waiting for them along the way, but he didn't care. As he spoke, Fenris couldn't think of what was a better alternative for him, and that was the worst part. "Just... don't talk," he grunted. It was both so that Felras wouldnt strain himself, and so that Fenris could think. Had it been anyone else, just anyone... the thought repeated in his mind almost as a wish, but he knew what the reality was.

Fenris looked at the other elf when he spoke and he then looked ahead, still moving. “A plan...” he spoke, glancing behind them. “I know I don’t plan on letting them catch us,” said Fenris, shifting so that he held Felras’ arm around his neck as to support him better. The thought of leaving Felras behind crossed Fenris’ mind, but it left immediately. Fenris owed him his life, the least he could do was return it. 

Luckily for them, most of their trouble was indoors, so they had some air to breathe - literally - as they got outside. Fenris didn’t stop moving, hoping to get away as quickly as he could. “Come on, they’ll be on us soon when they find the bodies, we need to be as far away from here as possible when that happens.”

Fenris didn’t do much in the way of work towards the other man when he saw Felras getting to it, so he paid attention to his target. Once he killed the man, he took a deep breath, and that was when the sound of Felras’ voice wrung in his ear. 

He turned around quick as lightning to see what was happening, and was going to help until the man burned to death. The elf froze, realizing what was going on. There he stood, and there was Felras, bleeding and on the fast road to death. In the short moment Fenris took to think about it, he thought for a moment that it would be the kinder alternative to him turning into an abomination, or remaining a blood mage. 

Fenris moved over to Felras to see the damage, and he thought about the fact that the elf was his friend. A friend that had helped, that had been hurt for him, that had fought for him, that came all the way out to the middle of nowhere and was bleeding out - all for him. But he was a blood mage. The internal struggle was eating away at Fenris, and he didn’t have time.

Felras pressed his hand hard to the wound to stem the flow of blood. He could taste blood on his teeth, and his breath came short and fast. “I-I’m alright. I’ll be alright. Just…let me…”

He took as deep a breath as he could and held out his hand, closing his eyes and concentrating. He drew from the blood spilled by their enemies and closed the wound in his side. He wasn’t able to do much more than close the wound on the surface, but it was enough to keep him from bleeding out until they could take proper care of it. When he opened his eyes again they were bloodshot, some of the vessels having burst from the effort. It certainly didn’t make him seem less threatening.

“T-that will do for now. We should go.”

Fenris simply watched Felras as he worked to heal himself, and a thousand thoughts ran through his head. He couldn’t believe it, even when the proof constantly rose up in front of him, he couldn’t believe it that Felras was a blood mage. Still, he was going to die, and there was no point in making a decision on what to do with a dead man, so Fenris was going to get him out of there first. He had it in his mind to kill the man where he stood, but after everything he had seen Felras do, every moment they fought together, every moment they shared, it was hard not to see all that while thinking about killing him.

Fenris took hold of Felras’ arm and began making his way down the hallway and through the door, finding an exit nearby. He walked quietly so that they could make a shaded escape, but when he heard men approaching, he quickened his steps and held onto Felras tightly.

Getting Along | Bethany x Fenris

Blasted city and blasted quests. As if it weren’t enough that he had to deal with mages in the first place, now he was traveling with one. Hawke just had to send Fenris out with Bethany. He could almost tell that it was her way of having the two get along. Still, he didn’t question her. Fenris had no qualms with letting people know how he felt towards a subject or matter, and he wasn’t going to stop any time soon. 

Fenris watched Hawke and Sebastian start up the camp and he simply glanced at Bethany before heading into the woods. Finding firewood was simple enough, even with an extra pair of hands, but Fenris still minded his own business. He already had too much on his mind to start thinking now.

Still, the elf couldn’t help but glance at Bethany. She was a curious one. Extremely polite and controlled for a mage, but that was what anyone ever thought about mages until push came to shove. He was making an effort to trust Hawke, he still needed time for Bethany.

“She has a certain look and smile for everything. Spend enough time with her, you’ll know the difference between the look she has for when she wants to kill you, or be intimate with you,” he spoke, almost in a chuckle. How speaking about that woman entertained him. “Telling her this will also help you learn the difference.”
