Silph Co Field Agent journal

The barricade is holding for now. Bear took a bite on his shoulder while throwing one of those infected policemen off my back, protecting me. I cleaned up his wound and wrapped it tight, right now he is sitting against the wall, silently suffering.
I checked the gauze, he gave a low, reassuring huff and patted my knee as if to tell me to breathe. I am praying command answers our distress call soon..

This fever is burning him up from the inside out. His breathing has become so labored. I had to pull my balaclava past my chin just to catch my breath in this stuffy hallway. Bear noticed me shaking and rested his snout against my arm to keep me grounded. Seeing my buddy, who could split boulders struggle just to hold his head up, is hurting more than I can explain.

The infection's got em now. He looked me dead in the eyes, reached out to me, wheezing and defeated, and gave me a slow, deliberate nod. It was the same silent signal he used before every mission we've been on... He was telling me he was ready, choosing to go out as my partner. My hands shook as I pressed the barrel to the base of his skull. The gunshot shattered the room, leaving me alone in the quiet.

I pulled my balaclava back over my face, sitting in the blood beside Bear's body. Exactly one round left in the chamber. The exit door down the hall is bowing inward as the deadbolts tear free from the concrete anchors. I put the cold steel under my chin, trying to force my finger to pull the trigger, but grief has me completely paralyzed. The hinges just snapped off the wall.
I'm not running anymore
