Next, we have...
Francis of Assisi!
As a saint he is well loved (and for good reason) so Francis has very big shoes to fill! As St Francis's (unknowing) representative, Francis must "relearn" as much as he can about animals and biology to be its proper patron. However, his heart often battles with his head on this matter, as unfortunately the education he's being provided has a distinctly creationist and androcentric lean. Francis is also being trained in Umbrian Italian, but it takes more of a backseat to Latin than Joan's Old French Lessons do as a result of the languages being more similar to each other.
Francis bears two kinds of scars: the physical and the psychological kind. Physically, he's been given the stigmata on his hands and feet (the forehead and chest were deemed too dangerous, but no, Francis did not give consent nor is he aware that these wounds are not divine). These wounds will sometimes have "flare ups" when he's stressed or emotional and will hurt/bleed more excessively. They're kept in sterile bandages that need to be changed daily. Psychologically, he has a healthy fear of paternal figures due to being convinced he spent another lifetime with St. Francis's notoriously abusive father.
Despite this, Francis is probably the most well-adjusted member of the Academy. He sees everything as a gift and tries to see everything from a lens of gratitude. He would rather give help than receive it (though he does accept it) and makes for an excellent travel companion. He smiles often (especially when nervous) and is generally nonjudgemental. He doesn't take well to violence or screaming. He is pretty confident in himself but knows his boundaries, which is what keeps him from fully being a people-pleaser.
Francis loves the sunshine and noticing all the little things he can find. His favorite food is oranges. He saw roadkill once and is now deeply afraid of cars. His build is slender and he is the tallest member of the academy at about 5'11". His devotion of choice is Adoration too, but also singing and making music. He is self-taught in the classical guitar and his voice part is tenor. Francis is Joan's best friend and Augustine (Gus)'s roommate. He and Gus do get along decently despite having very different personalities; they're like brothers.
Why was this Saint Chosen?
St. Francis being chosen for the academy is among the easier to understand - he's a very popular saint, so he'd make a great poster boy. From a propaganda perspective, it is also convenient to reclaim a seemingly peace and environmentally focused figure to have him say what you (or your wealthy donors) want to about war or the existence of climate change...
me: ah yes. I would like to make the Academy sedevacantist to show how conservative traditionalist ideologies bring people further from the church
me researching real sedevantist communities:
(I just have the burden of knowledge. That is all. I fault no one who is in this mindset because many people are simply manipulated into it. But please guys be so serious 🙏)
I TRIED LOOKING DEEPER AND THE SITE IS BROKEN. Every tab that isn't the home page won't let me in. Probably for the best this is literally just rage bait for normal Catholics
Salve! Since I am generally bad at introductions (but I still really want to get my concept out there somehow) I think the best way at this point to help us understand the concept of Saints' Academy is to go character by character and show off our saints!
Starting with...
Joan of Arc!
Though to her own knowledge she is the real Joan of Arc brought back to Earth (she is not), only some of the traits of the actual Saint remained: bluntness, determination, and most of her worth being tied to what she believes to be her mission. And a terrible, terrible fear of fire. (How did that get there? The showrunners of the Academy have their ways...) Joan also has a disability - epilepsy - that is used to further manipulate her into thinking she's the real deal (as attacks are reframed as "visions" and "ecstasy" despite how unpleasant and seemingly random they are).
((Important Note: I have done some cursory research and I aim to do as much as I possibly can to depict epilepsy well as it's not something I personally suffer from. The pinky promise I aim to keep is that it won't be reduced to a mere plot device.))
Joan is our protagonist - she drives our story forward and her struggle with learning about who she truly is deep down and why the underlying mechanics of the Academy are a problem is at the heartbeat of the story. She’s the morale that keeps her fellow soldiers moving forward but we also gain insight as to how that effects what's inside her.
Currently she's being educated and trained in skills relevant to her sainthood - Old French (as well as the usual Latin studies), sewing, and swordsmanship (but only the theatrical kind).
Out of the other saints she's closest with Francis (though not in a romantic way, to make it extremely clear - romance just isn't something on her radar at this point), as his mellowness evens out her fierceness and her focus brings him down to earth. Her roommate is Lucia, who keeps to herself and doesn't enjoy connecting with others, so her and Joan's relationship isn't very strong.
Joan is about 5'4" and at this point is 16 going on 17, like all of the saints in the Academy. Her voice part is Alto. Her prayer style of choice is Eucharistic Adoration in the form of "vigils" where she stays by the Sacrament in increments of an hour or more, often at night when she can't sleep. She doesn't have specifically a favorite food but she loves bread, pastry, and anything with gluten in it. Her dream is to have a ranch with horses :)
Why was this Saint chosen?
For some reason despite the real St Joan breaking a lot of expectations for sanctity and what is expected of holy women, conservative/traditional Catholics everywhere seem to adore her and place her on their shields like St Michael. Joan of Arc can get away with it, but she's definitely the exception. The way they idolize her is creepy and I don't like it. So obviously the evil radtrad academy would recruit her despite the obvious friction a sane person would see this causing
hello! some concept sketches to get us started, but in as short as I can...
Saints Academy is a story I dreamt up about a year ago now where seven teens were raised to fully believe they are the following saints: Joan of Arc, Francis of Assisi, Catherine of Siena, Therese of Lisieux, Augustine of Hippo, Ignatius of Loyola, and Lucia of Fatima (she's practically a saint...there's a method to this madness I'll probably elaborate on at some point)
They are in a secluded in a home deep in the Appalachian wood, in an academic program run by the angel Uriel to be witnesses to Christ in the end times
Join me in the biggest game of "just trust me" creative process I've ever attempted :)
