i think in general sometimes when people interpret characters they give them too much credit in a sense that they forget that people are often very much contradictory in their beliefs and sometimes they believe one thing but do another like. sometimes people say they want to leave when they want to stay. sometimes they stay when they want to leave. sometimes they say they understand something when they don’t and sometimes they say they don’t need things that they’re desperately yearning for. and if you want to create an appropriately multi dimensional reading of a character you need to accommodate this.
"being distressed about an evil thought is what shows you're a good person" = bad, unhelpful, is not at all conducive to OCD recovery
"there's no such thing as a good or bad thought", "your thoughts do not define your morality", etc = good, helpful, acknowledges the fact that thoughtcrime isn't real
remember kids, implying that distress is what makes you a good person is NOT a good way to encourage people to build a life where they are able to learn to live alongside intrusive thoughts

It wrinkles my brain that Jupiter’s moon Europa has oceans that are sixty miles deep, while Earth’s oceans only reach seven miles deep at most. I’m willing to bet good money that there’s life in Europa’s oceans. Like five bucks. You hear me, NASA? I bet you five bucks that there’s life on Europa… Now that there’s money and reputation on the line, I bet they send a mission there real quick.
I have no idea when this was originally posted, but NASA is working on their Europa mission RIGHT NOW to look for alien life! But get this, they theorize that because of the depth, gravity, and composition of the oceans, any organisms that lived there would be waaay bigger than aquatic life on Earth. So far everything’s going well with regards to their Europa mission so they should have a spacecraft on its way to look for giant sea monsters in space in only a few years. (The planned date is in the early 2020s.)
Looks like my negotiations worked. You’re welcome, humanity.
I’ve never been gripped with such cold terror and pure delight in my LIFE
explaining to an 18th century sailor that we’re looking for sea monsters in space.
The launch date for the Europa Clipper is October 2024.
Please let there be sea monsters in space Please let there be sea monsters in space Please let there be sea monsters in space Please let there be sea monsters in space Please let there be sea monsters in space Please let there be sea monsters in space
Yo is anyone gonna talk about the conditional acceptance of disabled people. Like the fact that its understandable to miss homework deadlines or have laundry pile up due to ADHD but its completely insane to think someone might forget to brush or flush a toilet or whatever other gross thing you can think of? Its not just a funny quirk its a disability. Same with autism, like there are fully people who need help using the bathroom due to autism. Stop fucking acting like someone being gross is a moral crisis. Stop fucking expecting all disabled people to fit your expectations. Stop acting like adhd and autism are just as trivial a trait as an astrological sign. Saw a post making fun of someone with adhd on tiktok who was honest about the fact they forget to flush sometimes and there were all kinds of ppl saying "i have adhd but i always flush they need to stop being gross". People wit low support needs get off ur fucking high horse yesterday pls.
"your mom" is a metaphysical concept to me. when i make a "your mom" joke the last thing im thinking about is my friends actual moms, who i usually don't respect. the mom is a metaphor. the esoteric concept of mom. hope this helps.
friendly reminder that you don't need any diagnosis or disorder to adapt your routine to accommodate you! sit down in the shower. brush your teeth and wash your face in the shower. bring a chair to the kitchen while you cook. use unscented products. your routine should be built for you.
life is so much better when u stop hyperanalysing urself and realise u can’t hate urself into being better u just have to accept ur a lil weird n fucked up slightly but it’s not that deep just live
to be continued after errands…

Its always so funny reading aesthetic critiques that try to lend themselves a sense of seriousness by trying to tie in a critique of capitalism. Bc if anything, the past 100 years should have taught us that capitalism doesn't have a set aesthetics. I've seen people complain about drab monotony as the aesthetic of capitalism, but also about how postmodern maximalism and bright colors are the aesthetic of capitalism. Anything can be the aesthetic of capitalism, because its just about what's selling in the moment. And people can sell their own aesthetics as "anti-capitalist" even when that's just another commercial trend (traditionalism, modernism, utilitarianism, maximalism, on and on forever).
20-30 years ago The Baffler was publishing articles that had the exact opposite complaint as this one going around rn: post-Fordist capitalism was drowning us in bright colors and loud, cheery designs. The alternative culture at that time loved minimalism and utilitarianism. Now trends caught up, and its the mainstream that's grey and minimalist and the critics who want color and uniqueness.
It's all fucking stupid, is what I'm saying.
#ok so like#yes?#but also: this is actually a terrible example of this#and i keep seeing people memefying this as a clout thing like#lol i don’t partake in spotify wrapped because i don’t believe in the commodification of data tracking#meanwhile they’re posting it on instametafacebookiverse#like#yes spotify keeps a record of the songs you listen to within the app they made for listening to songs#but they’re not actually tracking your every choice and action they’re tracking information you’ve put on your account that you made#to listen to songs#its the equivalent of the data you get when you like#look at stats within a video game#this game can tell that you played it x many hours#the real analogy to the insidious tracking from companies like google and zucky and amazon#would be if spotify was also tracking songs you heard in the mall/songs you played in other apps on your phone/songs you listened to on yt#and collated that into your spotify wrapped#this is at best a bad analogy used to suck the joy out of something harmless and fun#and at worst disinformation designed to distract folks from the deeply insidious tracking of the largest and most egregious actors#none of which are actually spotify unfortunately#like there is a real case to be made for the harm spotify is doing to the music industry#but that’s not about your personal privacy at all (via @swashbucklery)
being uncomfortable becomes easier when you realize that’s literally the point. it’s like working out. if you work out & it becomes easy for you, you already got all you could out of that workout. your body adjusted & is strong enough to handle it now. you’re not improving anymore. that’s why you up the ante with harder workouts, where you’re uncomfortable & not quite strong enough yet. bc eventually you will be strong enough. but if it’s not a challenge, there’s no gain. & that’s exactly how it is with situations out of your comfort zone. the more you put yourself in them, the easier they get—but that in-between phase where you’re struggling is still completely valid and ok and natural. it’s what’s supposed to happen. it’s what’s going to change you as a person. and you should keep doing it
Some tags I found in notes that I feel are a very, very important caveat
grounding techniques, ok 5 things i can see. ugly man. shitty palm tree. clear evidence of air pollution. conservative bumper stickers. roadkill. why do i feel worse
I used to do the 5 things you see, 4 things you hear etc with my daughter when she was spiralling, but it had a low success rate. Just didn't engage her brain, was too easy to just list shit things that made her feel shit.
I had to get creative.
Now we do shit like:
5 things you can see that you could easily steal without being noticed
4 things you think might be sticky if you licked them
3 things that you could fit in your mouth at once
2 inanimate objects that in another dimension, might fall in love
1 thing you can see that isn't made of cheese, but would be better if was
Obviously not those ones every time, I gotta keep mixing things up, else she doesn't have to really focus. Your mileage may vary, but it mostly works for us.
