Bruce has always believed names carry weight.

When you're little, it's almost exclusively sweetheart and darling. That's what Martha always called him. As you get older, they never disappear, they just become quieter and he rarely thinks before saying them, you're his daughter after all.

If he calls you by your full first name you're either seriously injured or seriously in trouble.

Otherwise, it's always one of his softer names.

He especially uses honey when he's checking on you after patrol (not me propagating my Bruce Wayne girl dad agenda)

JANUARY ‘85

Steve Harrington and you were worlds apart. He was a rich, popular douchebag and you were a minimum wage working teenager whose only friend was Jonathan Byers. Due to spending so much time with Jonathan, over time you had developed feelings for him. You knew he didn’t reciprocate your feelings so you just never acted on them.

Then his little brother Will went missing and instead of asking you for help he had asked Nancy Wheeler and that had made you burn with jealousy. That feeling only got worse when he had gotten into a whole fist fight with Steve Harrington just for Nancy. What did she have that you didn’t? You literally knew him better than anyone.

Unfortunately for you and Steve, Jonathan and Nancy had developed very mutual feelings for each other. Steve wasn’t an idiot, he saw the way Nancy looked at Jonathan and you saw the way he looked at her, they were in love, there was no stopping that.

So when Nancy and Jonathan finally got together, you distanced yourself from him, instead finding a friendship with Steve Harrington. You discovered that he wasn’t the same asshole that he was in high school, and instead was now a complete dork. He made you feel seen in a way that Jonathan hadn’t in the past few years, which led you to confessing to Steve how you had harboured feelings for Jonathan.

“I still love her too if I’m being honest” Steve told you matter of factly, making his feelings for Nancy clear. It was quite obvious that even though Nancy had stepped on his heart, he still loved and missed her. It was kind of sweet but sad at the same time.

You understood exactly how he felt. “I get it. I’ve liked Jon since forever, he’s my best friend. I literally know him best and he just hasn’t given me a second though. It hurts”. It was the first time you’d ever spoken about your feelings towards Jonathan out loud.

Steve looked at you sympathetically, “I can only imagine. I mean he was the school weirdo and yet you used to hang out with him and now he barely even talks to you”. He placed a hand on your shoulder in an effort to comfort you.

“Well that's just life I guess, it’s never fair is it?” you smiled sadly, leaning into his touch. His hand was firm on your shoulder, providing a comfort you hadn’t felt in years.

“It really isn’t” he agreed, since his girlfriend that he’d dreamed of having a whole life with had left him in a matter of moments.

You looked at him again, unintentionally pouting, “It’s just I wish we could do something so that the both of us could have what we wanted you know?”.

Upon hearing those words it was like a switch was flipped in Steve’s brain. “You know what? I think I have a plan”.

You looked at him skeptically. Steve wasn’t exactly known for being intellectually gifted so hearing that he had a plan wasn’t exactly comforting. “Do elaborate, Harrington” you told him, wanting to hear more about this plan of his.

“We should date” he announced proudly, like he had just solved all of your problems and achieved peak happiness.

“What?” you asked rhetorically, being both surprised and confused at his absurd suggestion. The thought of you dating him was just plain weird.

Steve then explained, “Not like actually dating, just pretend dating. Show them how happy we are and how unbothered we are that they are in a relationship. Make then downright jealous with how in love we are”. It sounded idiotic but weirdly appealing.

“Okay I’m in. But I have a few conditions” you declared your compliance to his stupid plan.

“Which are?” Steve asked, wanting to know your conditions for fake dating him.

You started listing things off, “Well, you can kiss me, but not touch my ass. You have to pay for the dates because well you’re rich and no sex”.

“I wasn’t gonna ask for sex” He tells you, a bit perplexed that you would think he expected that of you.

“Okay so what do we do exactly?” you enquire, not sure of the plan that Steve had in his mind.

“Well we lean into it like we’re in a real relationship. I’ll take you out on a date, get you flowers, take you to a nice fancy place, the works! Obviously we have to make sure that everyone knows we’re in a relationship and we have to look and act the part. Always keep touching each other, and kissing, especially in front of Nance and Jonathan” Steve explained with precision. From the sound of his plans it felt like he’s given quite a bit of though to it.

You nodded along to his ideas before asking, “How long have you been thinking about doing this?”

“A couple days. Why do you ask?” He questions you back, his eyes fixated on yours as if he was searching for something in your expression.

You shake your head, “Nothing it’s just that your plan sounds very well organized and I just didn’t expect that from you”.

Steve frowns at your words, looking offended. “Excuse me? Are you calling me dumb?” he asks you.

“Well Steve, you weren’t exactly known for being the brightest bulb in the lot” You tell him, justifying your statement, which anyone in town would agree with.

He placed a hand on his chest in mock offence, “I’m hurt! I can use my brain when I want to… I just don’t like doing Math or Science or English”. It was like he desperately wanted you to acknowledge the fact that he was not as dumb as you thought.

“Okay fair enough” you say, which makes him grin widely. You chuckled upon seeing his reaction, thinking how much of an idiot this guy was.

Steve then extended his hand out towards you, “Mission get with our lovers starts on the first day of summer”. You nodded, shaking his hand. His grip was firm, and comforting, he shook your hand for a moment longer before letting go.

SUMMER ‘85

Summer was supposed to be fun and happy and cheerful and all things rainbows and sunshines, but you and Steve had other plans. A few weeks before summer holidays, you had overheard Jonathan speaking to Nancy and it had come to your attention that they were applying for a job as a couple. This led to you and Steve also getting a summer job as a couple.

Steve’s dad was cutting him off and you needed the money so it was kind of a win-win situation, except for the fact that you’d be scooping ice cream for a bunch of brats all day long.

The night before the first day of summer, you were sitting on Steve’s bed, a bunch of papers stern across the room and a box of pizza lying next to you. This was all to make people think that you were having sex, but in reality you had to complete a couple assignments and he had offered to help.

“I swear I’m going to bang my head against a wall” you tell him, fatigue creeping into your voice as you stare at the physics notes in front of you.

Steve gives you a sympathetic look, “I would help, but you'd probably end up failing”. His tone was apologetic as if he was genuinely sorry that he couldn’t help you and he probably was. He liked helping people, especially his friends and you were definitely one of his good friends now.

You lean back against the headboard, rubbing your eyes, “Might just go to sleep at this point. We have to wake up early to go to Scoops anyways”.

“Oh yeah we should definitely sleep! Tomorrow is the first day which means that we’re going to have a lot of customers” He says while throwing a blanket your way. He then grabbed a blanket for himself and headed towards the door.

“What are you doing? Where are you going?” you ask him, straightening up in bed as his hand twisted the door knob.

Steve turned to look at you, “Well you’re sleeping here so I thought I would leave you alone and take the guest room”.

“Stay here, it’s fine. Don’t worry” You tell him, patting the space next to you, inviting him to lie down beside you.

“Are you sure?” He asked skeptically, walking back towards the bed. As he does so, you ease back into bed, pulling the blanket over yourself.

You roll your eyes at him playfully, “Yes Harrington I’m sure”.

The bed dips as he lies down next to you. He switches off the light, and pulls the blankets over himself, before muttering a quick good night.

There was something about this arrangement that was weirdly comforting. You liked spending time with Steve, he was nice, he was comfortable, he was everything you wished your family was like. But Jonathan was deep, he was the one you'd liked since sixth grade and that’s where your heart was.

The next morning you were woken up by Steve vigorously shaking you. “Hey wake up, we’re gonna be late” he told you, urgency in his voice.

“Calm down, jeez” you said groggily as you sat up in bed. When you finally adjusted to the setting you saw that Steve was already wearing the Scoops Ahoy sailor uniform. “You look so handsome, my fake boyfriend,” you teased.

He rolled his eyes at you, clearly in a hurry. “The bathroom’s there, get ready. I’m waiting for you downstairs”.

You got up and hastily got ready for work, stuffing yourself into the ridiculous sailor costume. You then went down to the living room where Steve was waiting for you with a PB&J sandwich in his hand.

“Honey I’m ready” you said sarcastically as you approached him.

“Eat up and follow me” he said handing you the sandwich and then grabbing his car keys and walking out the door. You sighed, following hims out and sitting down in the passenger seat of his BMW.

“Why did we have to get a job scooping ice cream and wearing ridiculous outfits?” you ask him, as the skirt makes you uncomfortable as you sit.

Steve looked at you like you’d just asked the most stupid question ever. “Uh because Jonathan and Nancy have a couple jobs and we have to out do them and this was the only job I could find that had two openings” he explained.

You gave him a dirty look, “Really? This was the only job? Or was it just the first one you saw and picked because you’re lazy?”.

Steve gasped, knowing he’d been caught. “I am not lazy, I just don’t have the attention span to read the whole news section for jobs” he justified himself.

“Mhm you’re totally not lazy. We could’ve been doing literally anything else! At this point I’m jealous of Nancy and Jonathan having better jobs” you tell him as you swat his arm.

He mouthed an ‘ow’ as you hit him, but continued driving you to the mall anyways. You knew he wasn’t actually hurt by your little swat and that he was just dramatic.

Your first day of work went smoothly. You met your other coworker Robin, who talked a lot but you thought she was amazing and instantly clicked with her. The twelve dollars and hours was a good deal and your customers were either people from school or little kids. The party, which included Will, Mike, Lucas and Max also visited you two.

Knowing that Mike and Will were Jonathan and Nancy’s siblings, you and Steve put on a whole love sick show, kissing each other and him holding your waist and all the puke-inducing things that couples do, in hopes that the two kids would somehow report this to their elders.

It was a little ridiculous how Steve kept kissing you even though the people you wanted to make jealous weren’t around, but he knew what he was doing and so did you.

A few days passed by and you and Steve settled into your little routine. You were practically living at his house now, so he’d wake up every morning, make you breakfast then you guys would drive to work, labour through the twelve hours, drive back home and then fall asleep watching a movie and eating frozen pizza. It was weirdly what made people believe that the two of you were a teenage couple that was deeply in love with each other.

JULY 4TH ‘85

As the Fourth of July approached, Dustin Henderson, who was Steve’s best friend apparently, graced you with his presence in Scoops Ahoy. You and Robin both teased Steve about the amount of children he was friends with at which he flipped you off making the both of you laugh.

The very next moment Steve was dragged into the break room by Dustin and the two of them were trying to crack a top secret Russian code. Robin gave you a look and you burst out laughing again.

“Do they think we’re idiots? They do know we can hear them right” Robin said, scooping a double chocolate for a little boy.

You decided to nitpick Steve, “Well they are definitely idiots, or at least Steve is. Dustin’s actually really smart but I think proximity to Steve lowers your IQ”.

Robin chuckled at your words. “Well you probably know him the best. You guys have been dating for a while now right?” she enquired about your relationship.

You shook your head, “We’ve been dating for a couple months, known him for two years though. He’s sweet, not like he was in high school”.

“Oh yeah, I remember. He was such an asshole, the whole King Steve thing was so gross” Robin remarked. You agreed with her since you very much hated Steve back when he was in high school. But these past few months had changed your opinion of him.

Dustin and Steve were unsuccessful in cracking the code, so you and Robin stepped in and helped them. They were reluctant at first to let you guys help, not wanting to put you in harm's way to which you told them to shut up and let you help.

Robin was very learned when it came to languages which led to the both of you finally cracking the code and discovering that the Russians were based under the Mall you guys were working at. Being the dumb teenagers that you guys were, you then proceeded to make a plan to infiltrate the Russian base, also managing to include Erica, a ten year old in the plan, and by some stroke of luck you succeeded. The victory was short lived though since Steve and Robin were soon captured by the Soviets as they rushed the kids to safety.

Your heart raced every moment that Steve and Robin were in captivity, it was safe to say that you were very worried about Steve but it was totally in a platonic way, or at least that’s what you told yourself because obviously your romantic feelings were for Jonathan.

The moment you freed Steve from the Soviets’ captivity, he’d wrapped his arms around you waist, seeking your comfort. Without a second thought, you’d reciprocated his actions, the two of you tangled up in a hug. You would’ve stayed like that if not for Robin yelling out at you two.

“Hey lovebirds, we’re kind of in a hurry right now” she said, following Dustin and Erica out in order to escape.

Steve and you broke apart quickly, following the group. He was clearly high on some kind of Russian drug. He was babbling to you about how he loved Nancy and something more about Nancy but you weren’t paying attention because you already knew everything about his feelings for the Wheeler girl.

“You look nice” he finally mumbled. You didn’t pay attention to it, chalking the statement up to the fact that he was high and probably hallucinating and definitely thought that you were Nancy.

A lot happened after that which included the group of you being chased by Russian guards, who were then taken down by El, which lead to the whole party plus Nancy and Jonathan reuniting with the Scoops Ahoy team.

Upon seeing Jonathan and Nancy, Steve immediately wrapped an arm around your waist and pulled you closer, but the couple could care less, so you shoved him off yourself instead choosing to focus on the plan to defeat the Mind Flayer.

After everything went down, you and Steve were sitting in the car. He was horribly beat up, his lip was cut and his face was swollen. You had somehow managed to get a hold of a first aid kit and were tending to the man.

“You don’t have to do that, I’m fine” Steve told you as you disinfected his lip, wincing from the alcohol as you did so.

In reply you rolled your eyes at him, “Shut up Harrington. If I don’t do this you’re going to get an infection and then you’ll die”. Obviously you were exaggerating, you just wanted to annoy him since you enjoyed doing so.

“I’m not going to die” he said, calling out your bluff.

“Shut up” You told him and he didn’t argue further.

Steve drove you to his home and you spent the night, but something was off this time. Every time you thought about Jonathan you didn’t feel the same anymore, you were no longer in love with your childhood best friend. So that morning you left before Steve ever woke up

JULY 11TH ‘85

A few days after the battle at Starcourt, you found out that the Byers were moving out to California, which made sense. Too much had happened to that family in Hawkins and they probably needed to get away from his town. Their move gave you the perfect excuse to fake break up with Steve.

Steve was a complicated subject. You hadn’t spoken to him since that night, you didn’t know what to say to him. He’d even come by your house, but you’d chosen not to open the door not knowing what you wanted.

Just as you were preparing to go visit Jonathan and his family one last time before they moved, you heard a knock on your door. Without looking through the peephole, you opened it. In front of you stood Steve Harrington, a bouquet of flowers held in his hand and an apologetic expression on his face.

“I’m sorry” he said, before you could get any words out. From the sound of his voice he really meant it, even though he hadn’t done anything.

At his apology, you were confused. “Sorry for what?” You asked , as he handed you the flowers, his fingers lingering on yours as you took the flowers.

“Sorry for whatever I’ve done that has pissed you off. You just left that day and I assumed it was because of something I did, so I’m sorry” Steve blurted out guilty even though he had done nothing except be himself and make you fall in love with him. His reaction made you feel extremely bad for him.

You sighed, “Steve you haven’t done anything. I’m not mad at you, I was just tired with everything that has been going on in Hawkins”. He looked relieved at your explanation.

Steve smiled, satisfied that you, the person that knew him the best, wasn't mad at him. “Oh okay good! So we’re back on track as a couple?” he asked a little too eagerly. It was like he had enjoyed your little game of pretend.

“No need though. Jon’s moving away it’s no use being a pretend couple, besides it wasn’t like our being a couple was affecting them anyway” You told the man in front of you who now looked a bit disappointed, but you told yourself that you were imagining things.

Steve’s face fell, but he covered it up with a signature Steve Harrington smile, “Right… So I guess this is the end huh?”.

You nodded, “Mhm, Steve Harrington, I officially break up our fake relationship". You chuckled a little as you said that, trying to hide the sadness in your eyes.

“So would you um.. Want to apply to the same job again?” He asked, in hopes that he would get to see you everyday.

You didn’t know he wanted that, so you replied with a quick and cold answer, “Yeah no, I already found a job”.

He gave you a tiny nod, heading back to his car. A tear trickled down your cheek and you quickly wiped it away. You stood staring into the distance as Steve drove away, realizing just how much you would miss him now that he’s become such a big part of your life. You’ds miss the way he snored, the way he woke up before you just to make you a sandwich for breakfast to make sure you were fed, the way he’d lean his head on your shoulder and wrap his arm around. Oh you would miss him so much, but you knew you had to let him go.

You knew the only way you'd be able to get over Steve would be to completely erase him from your life. Every time you saw him you felt a blush creep into your cheeks, and found yourself holding your breath. This wasn’t like your crush on Jonathan, this was different, and you knew that Steve would never reciprocate his feelings because he was deeply still in love with Nancy Wheeler.

SPRING ‘86

It had been nearly a year since you’d spoken to Steve. He’s tried to talk to you, maintain a friendship, but you'd kept pushing him away, avoiding him and after a while he’d stopped reaching out. Despite your drama with Steve, you were still friends with Robin.

After your fake break up with Steve, Robin had come over to your house to see how you were doing. “Why did you guys break up?” She’d asked you, as you sat beside her on your couch.

You didn’t want to lie to her so you confessed the truth. “It wasn’t real Robs. We were pretending to date so that Jonathan and Nancy would get jealous and realize that they were missing out on us and get with us instead”.

Robin has raised an eyebrow, “Okay, totally not weird. But you and Steve, you guys felt so real, like not one part of your relationship seemed fake to me or anyone with a good pair of eyes and common sense”.

“We’re just really good actors” You had told her. She wanted to say more, but you’d given her look that had given her a hint to not say anything more.

That was eight months ago and you were now settled into your new routine which did not include Steve Harrington. You were now working at the local grocery store and had come very close to running into Steve a couple times but had managed to narrowly avoid him. It was like a twisted game of hide and go seek except you were the only one playing. You had also taken Max Mayfield under your wing. Her life had basically fallen apart after her step brother had died and you had then decided to be there to support her and you tried your best.

Everything was going well until Chrissy Cunningham died in the trailer park you lived in. Max Mayfield had run up to your house, asking you to accompany her to Dustin’s house, explaining how Eddie was friends with the other kid and how that might end up with him in danger. You’d done as she has asked since over time you’d developed a soft spot for the kids.

Dustin had then dragged you to Family Video, which just so happened to be the place where Steve worked. You walked into that store right behind Max, and there he was, in all his dumbass glory, Steve Harrington.

His eyes met yours and it was like time stopped. He held eye contact for about a minute before his eyes traced your figure. “Hey, long time no see” he smiled, as you approached the desk, completely ignoring whatever Dustin was doing with the computer.

“Yeah, I’ve been busy” you replied, pursing your lips, avoiding the small talk he was trying to make. Robin gave you a look, that said, please just get a room already and you rolled your eyes at her suggestion.

Steve turned his attention from you to Dustin, “Henderson man what are you doing?”. Steve always pretended to be mad at Dustin even though you knew he would never really get mad at any of the kids.

Dustin didn’t reply to Steve, so you did instead, “He’s trying to see if anyone’s seen Eddie. The police found a body at his house and think he did it, but Dustin here thinks otherwise”. You didn’t really know Eddie that well to judge whether or not he had committed the crime he had been accused of.

“Because Eddie’s not a murderer” Dustin protested, half yelling at you, as another person cut his call.

“Hey don’t yell at her” Steve scolded the boy, instantly coming to your defence before you could even open your mouth.

That action of his earned you a look from both Robin and Max. They were both very intuitive girls and they could see just how Steve’s face had lit up when you had walked in. Robin had been observing how miserable Steve had been without your constant presence.

You couldn’t help but give a tiny smile at Steve’s response. It felt good to have him into your vicinity again. “So what’s the game plan here?” you ask, changing the subject.

“Find Ranger Rick” Dustin says, getting off his most recent phone call triumphantly, meaning he had finally found some useful information.

This revelation was followed by the lot of you trying to figure out where this Ranger Rick dude lived. Once you had your answer, you all cramped yourselves in Steve’s car to make your way to the destination. Robin, Max and Dustin all purposely sat in the backseat so you'd be forced to sit next to Steve in the passenger seat, which warranted you to shoot the girls a look of betrayal.

The whole car ride, you said nothing, in fact Dustin was the one doing most of the speaking. It was obvious that he was really attached to Eddie.

Once you reached Rick dude’s house, you searched everywhere for Eddie, finally finding him hiding under the tarp in the boat inside the boathouse. He looked scared, the genuine fear in his eyes telling you that he was in fact telling the truth about not killing Chrissy. The way he described her death made your blood run cold. It sounded way too much like something related to the Upside Down and you had thought that part of your life was over, El had closed the gate, this wasn’t supposed to be happening.

All of you decided that you need to go back to the trailer park in order to look for clues to confirm whether or not this was something from the Upside Down. Everyone was silent, even Dustin, having the same fear of that twisted dimension making a reappearance in your lives. You knew just how horribly it had affected Max.

“I swear I’m leaving this town once we clear up this mess” you mutter as you look out the window.

Unfortunately Steve hears you, “Yeah me too”. You sigh, not saying anything as his hand moves from the gear stick to rest over yours. For the first time in a long time, you let yourself bask in the comfort of Steve’s touch.

At that you heard Robin and Max giggle, which instantly made you pull away from Steve. Robin leaned toward you from the back seat, whispering in your ear, “He likes you too, you know”.

“Shut up Robin” you protested a little too loudly which earned you a look from everyone and a shit eating grin from Robin.

Max pursed her lips, realizing what the topic was about. She then turned towards Dustin, whispering something into his ear which made him snort. This in turn made you give her a look of disapproval.

You were still into Steve and these idiots were feeding your delusions and you hated it so much, or at least that’s what you told yourself.

When you pulled into the trailer park, the whole place was surrounded by police cars, and then you saw the one person that made you feel sick to your stomach, Nancy Wheeler. Why was it that every boy you loved was into her. You didn’t hate her, it wasn’t her fault that you were a hopeless romantic.

Steve got out of the car and immediately rushed over to Nancy to make sure she was okay which made you scoff. You just so desperately wanted to be the person he ran to. All the work you’d done to get Steve off your mind for the past eight months had been undone in just a few hours.

“I talked to Eddie’s uncle, he said that this kind of a murder had happened before. But it was back in the fifties committed by someone called Victor Creel” Nancy informed you all, stating the information she’d collected alongside Fred, who was now also dead.

Max was frowning, looking away into the distance which made you approach her. “Hey you okay?” you asked her, placing a hand on her shoulder.

She shook her head, grabbing onto your hand, “Chrissy and Fred, um.. They were both seeing the school councilor just like I am. I think it might be connected”.

That made sirens go off in your head. Steve immediately came up to the two of you when he saw the tense expression on both of your faces.

“What happened? All good?” he enquired. The rest of the lot turned to face you as he spoke.

Max explained the situation to everyone. The gears in everyone’s heads started turning. Everyone who had been targeted was not mentally or emotionally doing well, which meant Max could potentially be the next victim.

“Guy’s it’s getting late now, let’s get some rest and we’ll regroup in the morning. Max you’re staying with me through the night okay.” you say breaking the silence.

Everyone nods and Robin suggests, “How about we all stay together yeah? I think we all need it right now”. You nod agreeing with her statement.

The kids and Robin were out like a light, Nancy was trying her best to rest but kept tossing and turning. You were outside, trying to catch some fresh air in order to clear your head and make sense of the situation you were in.

You were sitting on a cheap lounge chair, your head in your hands, you were worried for max, for Dustin, for Robin, you just wished that all of you could catch a break. That's when you heard footsteps approaching you. You looked up to see Steve standing in front of you, a determined look on his face.

He slumped down in the chair next to yours, the cheap old thing creaking as he did so. “I missed you, like a lot” He told you, like it was supposed to clear away all your doubts and tension.

“What?” you asked him, raising your eyebrows at him. It was an odd statement to hear from his mouth, like sure you guys were casual friends but that didn’t mean he would miss you.

Steve looked at you, taking your hand in his. You didn’t protest. “I missed having you beside me every night” he told you like you were his fucking ex or something, and you kind of were, but only because other people thought you were dating.

You scoffed, “You say that like I was actually your girlfriend Harrington”. He was being so genuine and you were kind of blowing him off because the thought of Steve actually feeling something for you was just so absurd.

He holds your hand tighter, his thumb caressing the back of your hand. “Okay, I’m going to say something and I need you to listen to me, okay?” he asks for your confirmation before proceeding. You nod at him in understanding, telling him to continue. “We were just playing pretend but somewhere in between I fell for you. Remember when I showed up with those flowers? I was going to ask you out, but you just looked so uninterested that I backed out last minute”.

“Steve, what are you talking about? I saw you run up to Nancy just now. You still like her” You say, trying to convince yourself more than him.

Steve sighed, shaking his head. “I went over to her to find out more about the situation, I dont see her like that anymore” He tells you reassuringly.

“So what are you saying” you ask, hopefully this time.

“What I’m saying is that the past eight months have made me realize just how I feel about you. I missed you every single day. Honey, you’re the only one I want” he confessed, getting down on his knees in front of you.

You stare at him for a moment before breaking into a smile. “You know why I was sad that day with the flowers? Because I realized that I really liked you too” you told him.

Steve beams up at you, “So will you be my girlfriend now?” he asks eagerly.

You nod, leaning down to pull him into a kiss. Your first kiss as a real couple in love. It was soft, eager and desperate all at the same time. He smiled into the kiss, his hands all over you like he’d waited all year long to do this, and honestly he had.

“Take me on a date once all this is over” you tell him, momentarily breaking apart from him.

Steve stood up, pulling you up as well, “You bet I will”. He then pulled you back into his arms, savouring the taste of your lips on his.

Just like that your little game of pretend had turned into something very real.

But not everything was bad, you met new people, forged new friendships and that brought you some sort of twisted comfort. The most important of those people was Steve Harrington. In high school you used to know him as the most popular boy in school, but after fighting monsters with him you started to get to know the real him, and underneath all that macho fuckboy person of his, he was actually just the kindest person ever.

In conclusion, you fell in love with the man that Steve had become after falling from grace. You saw how he cared for the people around him, especially Dustin. He was never rude anymore, not even to Nancy or Jonathan, despite the messy circumstance of the break up. So when a beat up and high of Russian truth serum Steve has asked you out, you had immediately and confidently said yes.

Now, nearly two and a half years later the two of you stood in a house you called your own. His parents had fled town before the quarantine, so you had just moved in. You had redecorated the place to match your aesthetic and despite everything you two had found happiness in each other.

“Once we find this Vecna creep and flame him, I swear we’re gonna have that happy ending babe” Steve said, wrapping his arms around your waist and burying his face in the crook of your neck.

You let out a little laugh, “What happy ending?”. To you the idea of a happy ending had been extremely bizarre, but to your boyfriend, not so much.

Steve spun you around, so you were now facing him, flush against his chest. “Well the happy ending where you and I get married and have six, maybe seven kids” He says beaming down at you with a glint in his eyes.

The topic of marriage and kids catches you off guard, but you’re not opposed to it. You still raise your eyebrows at him for dramatic effect, “Six kids Harrington? Are you out of your bloody mind?”.

He pressed a soft kiss to your lips, then pulled away, looking into your eyes with absolute love and adoration. “I mean we can have as many kids as you want as long as they’re yours and mine”.

“Just charming aren’t we Steve” you teased him, “Besides we kind of already have six kids, even though one of them is being sulky and closed off right now”. Obviously you were referring to the Party. As a teenager you had babysat most of them and Steve had protected them from monsters once you were all dragged into the Upside Down mess, so in a way they were your kids.

Steve rolled his eyes at your comment, “Right, I totally forgot about them”.

You put on an offended expression, “How could you forget about our kids Steve? That’s just unacceptable”. He laughed at your terrible acting, pulling you closer into him.

“Yeah well, my favourite kid is being an asshole to me” He told you resting his head on your shoulder.

Immediately you understood that he was talking about Dustin. He was practically like Steve’s kid brother and after Eddie’s death he’d just distanced himself, pushing away anyone and everyone who tried to help. “He’s not being an asshole, he’s just a kid who’s grieving and who doesn’t know how to handle it”.

Steve sighed knowing that what you were saying was true. Part of the reason he was angry at Dustin was because he couldn’t do anything to help the kid. “I know” he said, then a beat “I just wish he would let us help him, you know?”

You wrapped your arms around him, hugging him tightly. “I know Stevie, but we’re gonna have to let him come to us okay?”. Steve melted into your embrace, nodding his head. You wanted to stay like that for a while but then remembered that you were wanted at the Squak, “Now let’s get going before Rocking Robin gets mad at us for being late”.

“By the way I meant what I said. I do want a life with you” Steve told you as you got into his beamer.

You smiled at him, a warmth in your eyes that only a few people ever saw. “I know, and I want it too, Steve. I love you, I want this, u, together till death do us apart you know” you affirmed that your dreams were the same as his.

Steve grinned, “Oh wow, wedding vows already huh? Let me at least propose first”. He obviously had plans to propose to you, you were basically his dream girl.

“It better be a big diamond Harrington” you told him as he continued driving. Steve merely hummed in response, making you roll your eyes.

Everyone was safe and alive, well almost everyone. El had sacrificed herself to end the cycle and though you mourned her, you respected her decision. Settling back into society was tough, you’d all seen and done things that had a hefty impact on all you mentally and physically. But eventually, things settled, and started becoming normal.

“Steve, I'm thinking of taking a full time position as a nurse at the hospital” you announced as your boyfriend flipped pancakes for you.

A big stack of pancakes was placed in front of you, complete with a whipped cream smiley face. “I think that’s a great idea sweetheart” he told you, his lips encasing yours as he pulled in for a kiss. You put your hands in his hair, as he pulled you closer, his hands roaming your whole body like he was touching you after ages even though it had barely been a couple hours since he was on top of you.

You two would’ve stayed that way if it weren’t for a voice, “Ugh you two are gross”. It was none other than Max Mayfield who was staying with you now. Her mother hadn’t made it in ‘86 and after waking up from his coma Max had nowhere to go, so you and Steve had opened your door for her and it was actually kind of nice having her.

“We’re a young couple, let us be” Steve argued with no real heat, “Don’t you also have a boyfriend?”.

Max rolled her eyes, “I do but that’s not the point! Anyway I just came to tell you guys that I’m going to school so bye”. She picked up her lunch bag, which Steve had prepared and walked towards the door.

“Bye Max, have a nice day” you said as she left, giving you one last smile as she did so.

“Kids are so much work” Steve groaned, leaning his forehead against yours. He loved Max, but she stressed him out a lot.

You then found your chance to tease him, “And you wanted six, what an idiot”. For the three months the two of you had spoken about your future a couple of times but nothing was set in stone just yet.

“That was old, dumb,naive me. The new me has now decided that maybe even two could be too many” he said, kissing your neck.

You laughed at his words, the sudden change in his dreams was quite humorous.“Could be, but that’s another adventure that we’ll face together and that’s all that matters” you told him, pulling him for a kiss.

“When you put it like that, I’m ready to have a thousand kids with you sweetheart” he said smiling into the kiss.

You kissed him back, letting his tongue dominate your mouth, your teeth grazing his skin as he did so. Breathless you finally pulled away and said, “Good, because we’re going to have one soon”.

Steve looked at you in utter shock and surprise, his hands travelling to your stomach. “You mean you’re..?” he asked, wanting to confirm that the words that had just left your mouth were true.

You nodded at him, a smile spreading across your face. “We’re having a baby Harrington” you told him, biting your lower lip in anticipation of his reaction.

“That’s the best news ever” he said, excitedly kissing you. He then picked you and spun you around in the air out of joy, “I can’t believe it’s finally happening”.

“Neither can I, but it is us. We’re going to have to be a real team this time” you said, still smiling widely as your feet touched the floor.

Steve didn’t miss a moment before blurting out, “Marry me, be my wife”.

“You’re not just saying that because I’m pregnant right?” you asked, just wanting to be sure. You knew he loved you but you just wanted to be sure.

“No no no, that’s not why” He said, fiddling through his coat pockets and pulling out a velvet box. He then got down on one knee right there in your kitchen. “I was going to do this tonight, I had a whole thing planned, but then when you gave me this amazing news I couldn’t help but want to ask you to be my wife right on the spot. So what do you say, will be my wife?” he proposed.

There were tears stinging your eyes, not out of sadness but overwhelming joy. “Yes of course I want to be your wife” you said, accepting his proposal and extending your left hand out towards him.

“Mr and Mrs Harrington. Sounds good right?” he asked, placing the huge rock onto your finger. It was a beautiful ring and an even more beautiful husband.

You nodded, “Sounds perfect Stevie”. He pulled you into another kiss and you were still smiling as he did so.

A job as a nurse, a baseball coach husband and a baby on the way, everything you’d ever dreamed of having. Just like that you had your white picket fence happy ending and it was just perfect.
