The forgotten ones: on honouring obscure gods
I adore obscure gods. The only issue with loving obscure gods is that they are obscure; not much information is available. Some gods have entire cultus that span across the ancient world with an abundance of information. Others, however, are sometimes only mentioned in an epic a few times or are only found in rare archaeological records. Honouring an obscure god can mean a lot of devotional work to honour them fully.
Experience will be the guiding factor. After worshipping obscure gods for a while, it’s become easier for me to honour them properly. Trust that moving time will teach you what you need — you can do it. Now, here are my tips for honouring obscure deities.
Obtain every scrap of information
Every detail matters. There is bound to be something to help you understand this obscure deity. Whether that’s directly seeing the artifacts that are recorded, reading academic interpretations, seeing them in texts, etc. Analysing their depictions in art will be especially useful, as that is how that deity was envisioned and worshipped.
When it comes to very contradictory interpretations by scholars, it may be helpful to make your own or apply UPG to come to your conclusion.
Study the world that worshipped them
The ancient world was very different and similar to our own. All events need to be put in context. The ways a god is worshipped may change, evolve, or be removed entirely. Or perhaps they just appeared in a particular period, never to be worshiped until the modern day. I recommend this book series, the Routledge Worlds series, which covers the world — ancient or modern — across the expanses.
However, always remember to keep the evidence in the context of the times. Callimachus’ hymns will not be the same as Homeros, for example. They are removed by hundreds of years and long-lost contexts. The date, location, historical events — all of it must be kept in mind when analysing data.
Use general/typical offerings when beginning
A big hurdle in worship is knowing what to offer. An easy way to avoid this is to give “general” offerings. In helpol, this can be wine, for example. Water is a very versatile choice too. Each religion will have its particular codes and rules, so knowing these rules and applying them to the obscure deity you are trying to worship will help. However, most of all, you will eventually gain the UPG you need to know what to offer.
If possible, see what the worshippers offered historically. A great way to find out what to offer is to find what they were offered in the past. You will likely find this information in the papers about the deity. Zoological and archaeological records may contain trace details of food and other devotional gifts.
Take note of all UPG
Every scrap of UPG will be helpful. Others may present upg around a similar figure, or you may develop a strong SPG. These personal tidbits of gnosis will make up a large majority of your worship. Keep the knowledge somewhere where you will keep track of it — a blog, a notebook, etc. It would be a poor choice to let the UPG be forgotten (though if you forget, that is alright — forgetting is natural and not your fault. Do not blame yourself). This tip also applies to SPG, especially if it comes from outside groups or people.
Study Syncretisms
The process of syncretism can reveal a lot about a deity’s character. Particularly in regards to who they are syncretised with. Historical syncretisms made sense to those worshipping the god, so what did they know what we do not? Knowledge can be gathered via historical syncretism and why it occurred.
Historical syncretism could also lead to you reconstructing that very syncretism. It all depends upon you and your lovely path.
Identify who they were worshipped with and why
Another clue is who a deity is worshipped with. Was the god worshipped with a spouse, their child, a sibling, or because of a shared domain/association? It all depends upon context and sometimes interpretation. When reconstructing worship, continuing that shared worship may be an excellent option to honour this obscure deity.
Try to identify associations
Deity information lists often include their associations. They show what the deity likes, wear, etc. Associations are helpful to know when seeking to honour a god. Finding these associations can help you develop worship and altars. Common associations are weapons and accessories - they can be seen in art and sometimes cultus. You will most likely find a deity’s associations in art, epithets if they have them, and offerings.
Ask the deity themself
Who is better to ask how to worship the deity than the deity in question? Communication is key. You could even pray for more information to come your way about them. Devotional work is ultimately about the god in question, so definitely make sure to ask them and see if they reply.
I hope my tips from my experience can help you build your worship. As you learn and grow, you will honour the obscure deity or deities you are researching. From personal experience, I can tell you it is well worth it.
TLDR; worshipping obscure gods is beautiful but can be difficult. My tips to help you develop a praxis are: obtain every scrap of information, study the world that worshipped them, use general/typical offerings when beginning, take note of all upg, try to identify associations, and ask the deity themself.

Elminx's Long-Form Lemonade for Sweet Cleansing
If you've been hanging out for more than a hot minute, you have probably caught on to a secret about my kitchen witching: it's not the NUMBER of ingredients you enchant; it's how you enchant them. For the purposes of witching, I prefer simple recipes (ingredient-wise) that have a bit of oomph to them. Do you need to stir a pot for 45 minutes straight? (see also my french onion soup recipe) What about starting a vinegar infusion that needs to be shaken every day?
This, as the saying goes, is where the magic is made. At least, for me.
So, imagine my surprise when my friends introduced me to a long-form way of making lemonade. Rather than simply juicing the lemons and adding some sugar and water - you combine the sugar and lemon peels and let them sit for some time to release the lemon's essential oils.
Not only does it make a superior lemonade (can confirm!), but it immediately had my magic wheels turning.
The goal is to make lemonade that will sweetly cleanse you of what ails you. This spell can easily be adapted to add specifiers—see the end of this post for more details.
As always, I will not tell you how to do YOUR magic. This is a technique, not a magic tutorial.
The Basics: When Life Gives You Lemons
Lemons have a long history of use as a cleansing agent. Cunningham's infamous green book lists them as a feminine plant, under the purview of water and the moon and used for the powers of "longevity, purification, love, friendship." (for what that's worth) From an herbal energetic perspective - lemons are considered to be cooling - they are used in the summer to cool hot termperatures and applied to the sick to help bring down fevers. Citric acid is also a bladder stimulant, which we will be making use of for the purposes of our potion-making.
What we associate with lemon as the "cleaning agent" is believed to come from limonene, a terpene found in the peels of most citrus fruits that is both antiviral and antibacterial. Lemonene is used in many cleaners that you can buy on the market but can also be extracted directly from the fruit, as we will do in this recipe.
The Technique
This standard high-end bartender technique makes wonderful, complex sour mixes that can absolutely make the perfect cocktail. Rather than extracting the limonene from the citrus using alcohol or vinegar, we use sugar.
This technique is called oleo-saccharum, which means "oil-sugar" - you are using sugar to draw the essential oils out of the lemon peels, making a natural (no heat) syrup. Note here: this syrup can be used on its own for all sorts of syrupy needs - you could stop the preparation here if you don't love lemonade.
This can be done on the fly (an hour or so), but I highly suggest letting this sit for 12-24 hours for the full effect.
The Recipe
You will need:
5-6 lemons, the best-looking ones you can find
1 1/4 cups sugar
Filter Water (to taste)
Peeler, citrus juicer, optional
Additional magical flavoring, optional
Become better acquainted with your lemons. For the purposes of this recipe, I do this by holding them, talking to them about what I want from them (general or specific cleansing), and rolling them across a hard surface. This last part helps to separate the peel from the pith, which will help you cut away the peel in the next step. Because we intentionally try to release the limonene compounds in this recipe, you may wish to begin by carving your lemon at this step (BEFORE you peel). You could carve your intentions, your name, the names of the people you are looking to cleanse, or any cleansing runes or sigils that you use in your craft.
Carefully peel your lemon. You want to get as little pith (white parts) as possible, as they don't taste good. Take your time here. Really breathe in the scents of the lemon during this. This is the first part of the cleansing process - you are incidentally cleaning yourself and your kitchen as you do this part of the spell. Lean into this. It smells amazing. Revel in it. Think about how it reminds you of everything being shiny and clean as a child. Lemons ARE cleansing - really feel into this here. We won't use the rest of the lemon until tomorrow; you can juice it here or store it overnight in an air-tight container)
Add your lemon peels and the sugar to a mixing bowl and thoroughly massage the sugar into the lemon peels. This should take some time - think fives of minutes at least. You want to do this until you can feel the change in consistency in the sugar - try to incorporate all of the sugar with all of the lemons. Remember, sugar is inherently sweetening, and lemons are inherently cleansing - you combine these two elements here to make a sweet, cleansing spell. Let the smell of it clean out your nose and your sinuses. This is the meat of your spellcasting - you are working your spell into your ingredients. Talk to it. Use your energy. Pray over it. You will know when this step is complete.
Cover your bowl and let it sit at room temperature overnight or for up to 24 hours. The longer this extracts, the more intense the flavor in the finished product. In a pinch, give it an hour, but I suggest waiting at least 8-10 for the best effect.
The next morning, add 2 cups boiling water to your lemon paste and stir until it has thoroughly combined - this is a great place to reinforce your magic from the day beforehand. (This version had the addition of some freshly picked sour cherries which gives its red color)
6. When this has cooled, add the lemon juice and additional water to taste. I personally put this in a half-gallon ball jar and filled it with water, and then my partner and I further diluted it from there.
7. Drink and enjoy. For an extra cleansing effect, consider that part of the act of citrus is that of a urinary stimulant - it will make you pee. Think about how peeing removes things from your life. Remove what needs cleansing. Your spell is complete.
This spell is as simple as that but it can be dressed up in some many different outfits with very little effort. Do you know a flavor (remember, all edibles here) with the right magic associations to add to this spell?
Add some blackberries at the infusion stage for good old-fashioned hedge witch protection. If you really need something out, you could experiment with infusing some jalapeno after you've made the lemonade (tread with a lot of care here...). I've worked with lavender and hibiscus here for calming, cool energies. I recently added a cup of sour cherries to Step 3 for a love-cleansing effect.
There are two ways you can add flavors to this spell: you can mix your flavor in during the sugaring phase, or you can do a secondary infusion after your lemonade has been made. Use your best judgment here - fruits can go in with the citrus peels for sure, but herbs and other more "tea like" ingredients might be better steeped afterward.
I haven't tried it yet, but I'm eager to use some of my savory kitchen herbs the next time I near to clear out my money flows.
Or alternatively, use it as the first step in a witchy cocktail (my go-to, as you know). This lemonade makes an exquisite base for a margarita—for a bougie twist, use white Patron and some Chambord; you will not be disappointed.
This is almost a blank slate - sweet cleansing could be used for anything you put your mind to.

Are You Overcomplicating Things?
We all do it. Here are some common pitfalls we run into when practicing witchcraft (and how to stop making things more difficult for ourselves!)
No Standards for Signs
"I saw a ____. Could that be a sign?" Nobody knows for sure, we weren't there and we're not you. Even if you've asked for a sign and are waiting for a response, now you're spending brainpower trying to assess every little thing around you. Smooth out the process by asking for specific signs so you know what you're looking for. Color + Noun, such as "a green feather" tends to work well. If you're not expecting a sign about a specific thing, let the Universe know what your standards are. "I will read things as a sign only if ____."
Too Many Spell Factors
More spell factors, generally, helps hone and amplify a spell. You can also go overboard. If you're exhausting yourself trying to find the exact moment the astrological hour, moon phase, and relevant constellations all line up with you having specific rare ingredients, memorizing a chant in another language, blah blah blah, you usually don't need to go that hard. Just pick two or three you can reasonably achieve and do what you need to do.
Being Lost in the Research
"I'm not ready to cast this spell until I ____." Research and prepping yourself properly are important, but it takes years to become a true ""expert."" At some point, we need to be confident in ourselves and actually take action. You're ready. It's fine.
Waiting for the Perfect Moment
Part of this can be astrological (see Spell Factors) but it's also just life. There's never a perfect moment to do anything... the Universe doesn't put those moments on a platter for us. Waiting for the exact perfect time can become an excuse to stall very easily! To quote Shia LaBeouf, "JUST DO IT!!!"
Needing a Second Opinion... on Everything
Second opinions aren't always bad; they can be very useful! But you don't need external validation for every move or interpretation you make. Remember that your craft is your own, not theirs. You have a good head on your shoulders! If you're still feeling unsure, write it down somewhere and come back to it later to see how you feel.
Overprotection
Wards, shields, and circles oh my! On top of that, there are protection methods galore with amulets, house charms, guardian spirits, reciting scripture, hand motions, and more. These are largely preventative measures that aren't under constant attack unless you are Up To Some Shit. No need to feel scared or vulnerable for not having every single one, just like you don't need to guard your house with triple locks, motion sensors, high-tech camera feeds, an electric fence, a guard dog, and a moat.
Materialism
There are so many beautiful tools out there. I do think liking the way our craft looks, to a point, is helpful because it gets you in the mindset. You can easily work with whatever you have around you, though. It's easy to fall into the trap of feeling like we need some specific ritual item that we've been doing just fine without before. Or that a functioning tool works okay, but it would be even better to shell out for the fancy one. Or that we have to have a statue of our deities. It's not necessary and it hurts your wallet, too.
Forgetting the Mundane
Not everything requires magical solutions. You don't need to perform a banishing spell when blocking their social media will have the same effect. Being firm about boundaries and telling someone directly their actions bother you (and tell them to stop) can usually prevent the need for a binding spell. The best clear-the-air/resolve conflict spell is an honest conversation. Figuring out if someone likes you romantically can be a question for the cards, or you can just ask them. (Yes, that's super nerve-wracking. You can do it, I promise.)
Never gonna forget that time I said that I wished there were more sober queer community spaces b/c I'm an alcoholic (1268 days yo) and I feel left out b/c everything in my town happens at bars, and Everybody On Tumblr got real mad at me b/c they assumed I was attacking gay bars as a concept
You are Like 12 and have never been to or seen a gay bar. I am Old and have a habit of enjoying them a bit too much. I have forgotten more about the importance of the bar and club scenes than you'll ever know. Just let a queen drink her ginger ale in peace.
People have gotten real mad at me for wanting queer spaces other than clubs/bars because bars and clubs are innately inaccessible for disabled people, too. I dont just mean how alcohol mixes with most medications or flashing lights either, I mean the unnecessary amount of stairs and lack of genuine handicap stalls or even wide enough door frames for larger mobility aids to fit through. Just to start.
The queer community has an ableism problem, treatment of people in recovery included.

Anyone wanna help?
To keep it brief, my gf was inadvertently pushed into a friendship with a guy(new coworker) who claims to be extremely powerful and work with lots of norse and greek gods.
He has overwhelmed her and tried to plant seeds of doubt in her about me being truthful to her in less than a day of knowing each other. His energy dosent have any apparent evilness but he tried to say it was my main goddess, hera, that told him i was untrustworthy despite hera telling me he was not speaking to her.
He did multiple tarot readings and pendulums on her without her consent and despite the fact he says hes primarily a norse god devotee, that he knows hera better than me. Hes angry constantly, yells and swears all the time and shes uncomfortable, not to mention he pried to learn her trauma the same night he did those unconsented readings. He also said " you can choose not to tell me your trauma but if i really wanna know, i can always find out through readings and my gods but i wont cause i respect you" aka super manipulative, controlling and abusive behavior super quickly.
He also vented to her (unsolicitedly) that one of his exes was lieing about him r*peing her and showed her that he was makeing fake accounts on different social medias to harass this girl. He also has the biggest witch ego ive ever seen and has the worst main character syndrome ever. He says very untrue things that have been proven wrong, that he might as well be a god himself, that he's being hunted by every cryptid imaginable and works with very common and popular gods as well as ones that hate each other and he dosent seem to even be able to set boundaries with them. I mean, the man says hes the highest ranking kind of angel while also working with multiple evil deities including multiple incarnations of satan himself. Not to mention hes very much insulted native beings and pretend sk*nw*lkers and w*nd*gos are the same things as say, mothman.
In the end, wether what hes doing is true or not, my gf is drained and anxious of him to the point where she veils all the time( she never used to veil before) and has panic attacks. Shes overwhelmed and unhappy.
What im asking is, if this guy is as powerful as he says and is as dangerous as he says he is(he says he cant hex people cause its killed them before and hes " too powerful" and " too emotional" that his power wouldnt smack someone on the wrist but instead maim them.), what can we do to protect ourselves/home/animals/lives from him? She wants to cut contact and protect herself but shes scared he wont ever leave her alone because of how much he dumped on her.
I need spells, i need wards, i need sigils and i need something if, should he attempt to hex her/us that he'd regret it. I need help and i need it asap.
If you cant offer help, please offer energy to go into the spells/wards/etc to protect us. We are very scared and neither of us are in as deep as him. Im barely out of baby witch territory and shes just entering it.
So I’ve been asked to comment on this and I’m both honored and horrified. The unfortunate reality is witchcraft promises power in exchange for magical thinking and it is fantastical in a way that attracts people who want to feel special and chosen. Usually this just results in forgivable cringe, other times- you get THIS GUY. I wouldn’t be too worried about him long term. I’d guess he feels hunted because he is being hunted. You really think someone can bumble about magic with that much arrogance and tactlessness and not piss someone off? I’d wager he actually has ties with no deities because I’ve never heard of a god who likes being spoken for or name dropped. Hell, Hera might help you in kicking his ass if you asked. So long term, he’s just a matter of time before something catches up to him. But you need help now, SO
Without further ado
Emergency Protection Crash Course
Immediately Step One is Mundane: Begin building a case against him. Record conversations and take photos if you need to. You need something to present to management as grounds for immediately getting shift changes so you do not overlap as well as potentially lead to firing him for harassment and threat. If this goes so far as police, that will help there too.
Once you’ve taken all your mundane avenues you can now it’s time to get magical:
Passive Protection -
Home Wards: make sure the wards on your home are up and maintained. If you’ve never made a ward before, start fresh. Clean every room, and I mean CLEAN. Marie Kondo the hell out of it and do those cleaning tasks you loath like deep cleaning a dishwasher. Any old or stagnant energy that a curse could cling to needs to get outta there. Then sit with you and your partner (casting a circle prior if your practice so asks for it) and imagine the two of you together creating a small white bubble of energy. (I tend to see a white glow ball , my partner sees a gelatinous cube. Whatever your energy looks and feels like is appropriate). Grow that bubble until it almost has a weight to it. You can make it bigger or smaller, move it around. Then ground down to the earth, connect to other elements if you see fit too, and ask those elements to aid you. Invite house spirits if you have them to contribute their energy too and grow that orb (or whatever) until it expands to encompass the entire border of your home. While one person holds the ward, have the other person craft a sigil. Release the energy and go put that sigil on ALL THE THINGS.
Herbal Protection: For me, that’s rosemary. I have huge bushes of rosemary outside I planted a few years ago as well as one in the backyard that act as a magical ward and would you know it- when I visited my local witch shop and coven home, they had rosemary too. But pick an herb that grows well in your area and feels protective to *you*. Grow it outside, or simply get some dried to hang above your door or put on mantles. Heck, pine leaves can be protective if you connect to pines in that way.
Sigils: I mentioned them above, but that protective sigil you made in the home warding practice? That can go on shoes, inside shoes, purses, whatever. Spell Protection -
Glamours/Raising Your Vibrations: Boost YOUR energy. Ego maniacs of all shapes and sizes prey upon the weak, or those they perceive to be. Boosts your personal energy through any way that makes you feel good. Hell, for me, getting boba on Fridays is an energy raising practice. Listen to music that pumps you up, be happy, feel good in the clothes you wear. The higher your energy is, the less chance curses can even stick. Look at it this way, if someone says ‘ you’re going to lose all of your money and die poor’ but you’re happy, motivated, and relaxed- you WILL get hired by someone sooner or later, and likely move up in the ranks. Even if your funds take a dip, they cant be held down if you aren’t down to begin with. Enchant your makeup, your clothes, your jewelry. A talisman could be great here, or protective crystals.
Shielding: Same practice as house warding but you focus on your own body and you do this every single morning. Veiling is also a good idea too.
I’ve also taken this spell from Queering Your Craft by Cassandra Snow
A Spell To Get Rid of Unsafe People In your Work And Social Life:
- A Jar With A Lid
- Person’s name written and a lock of their hair or something personal to them/that they’ve touched before.
Take the....well you take the jar to the bathroom and you, well, you pee on it. As you pee on it, she says to say “Be gone from my life (person’s name)” but say whatever feels good. I like “fuck you” personally for banishing. Wash your hands (please wash them) and as you do so say “ May the harm you do reflect back to you. May and I and my community be free from you.”
Bury the jar. Bury it deep and bury it far away. I’d even put a brick on that shit or a lot of rocks. Jump up and down on it. Do whatever feels good.
And that leads me to the most important part:
DO WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL SAFER.
All the protective spells in the world wont do shit if you are just going through the motions. One time I found a lucky penny on the ground, painted an evil eye on it, and took it to my boyfriend’s family dinner. A book didn’t tell me to do that but it felt right and I felt invincible. If your morning coffee gives you a boost, stir thrice some extra protective energy. If black or red makes you feel bold- wear that. Let your intuition guide you and surround yourself with things that amplify you. Salt baths are said to be cleansing, but my partner prefers to be scrubbed down with a big soapy loofa to get negative energy off. I keep a teacup of salt water under my bed to absorb bad energy from the day despite that typically being meant for when you have a ghost or entity in your home.
Your intuition will tell you what makes you feel safer and bolder and that will be your best tool.
Good luck! And don’t be afraid to reach out to the norse gods for help. Frejya loves to crush a male ego.

Can you make a post for knitting or crochet charms? I want to enchant my projects with a little confidence or luck or stuff like that
Both crocheting and knitting are forms of knot magic, so there's a lot you can do with both! Yarn, string, and other things like that have quite a few uses in magic, and they are very versatile. I tried to find a variety of things you could do, including what you mentioned. Hope you have fun!

BRA WITCHCRAFT 👙
love them or hate them, if you’re a bra owning individual you can use them to your advantage in the witching world!
-Sigil Charging: Place the piece of paper with the sigils you want to charge inside your left cup, over your heart, and leave it there for however long seems right to you. You can also draw sigils inside the cup for self love, etc. (in my experience it only works on your left side, stronger energy from the heart)
-Charm Carrying: Have a charm you need somewhere discreet? Put it in your bra! It keeps the charm close and secure while you go about your day.
-Energy: Okay… hear me out on this one. Your bra sits on your chest, right over your heart. It absorbs all of the negative energy from your day, right? Use your bras from bad days in curses, hexes, etc. for an extra kick. (be sure to cleanse it afterwards so you aren’t negatively affected)
-Defense: Your bra can attack others, but also defend you! Charm your bras like a poppet and use it as a defense mechanism to any ill will sent your way.
Now, my bra wearing witches, go forth and strut your stuff!
*this can also apply to binders & tank tops!*
