I've been trying to give a little peek behind the curtain here, but the reason we're in a trickier spot than some newer indie pubs is most of them start with a core staff of writer/editors who do most or even all of the writing, splitting whatever money comes in each month.
While we are doing some writing (I am writing the piece for the week after next!) it's really vital that we feature a wide range of writers—fan culture and cultural criticism are big umbrellas, and these conversations only work when you feature people with different perspectives, backgrounds, interests, etc etc.
We have about a dozen freelance pieces in the works, but we can't commission any more at the current rate of subscriber revenue. A lot of folks on here have been so enthusiastic about our new chapter and our vision for the publication—if that's you and you've been toying with subscribing, it would really help us as we get going. The yearly rate on the basic tier works out to about $6 a month, and our affordable tier rate is about half of that. Even a small one-off donation—it all helps!!
