Berlin Salsa Congress 2008 Review by Sydney Hutchinson If you needed any more proof of the salsa explosion that has been going on around the world for the past few years, you only needed to look as far as the flyer table at the Berlin Salsa Congress this year. In just that one square meter of tabletop, I picked up flyers for salsa congresses and festivals in Poland, Switzerland, Morocco, Estonia, the UK, Slovenia, Greece, Turkey, Monaco, two cities in the Netherlands, and three cities in Germany. When I started performing in New York in 2000, salsa hadn’t yet been heard of in most of these places. Or maybe it was just that New York can still be so insular and cliquish as a scene. Whatever the case, this is one of the great attractions of being a salsera/o today: you never know who you’ll meet next, or where you’ll end up.
This is Part Two of Do's and Dont's of Leader and Followers on the Dance Floor. If you haven't read Part One, check it out here. (Rising crescendo): Ladies
When I went to my first salsa class I was scared. Very scared. I was nervous and I made excuses and put it off for a couple of weeks. Even now, after 10 years of dancing, I get nervous going to new classes where I don't know anybody. If I knew then, what I know now, I would be a professional salsa dancer. Now, with the incredible internet, you can learn how to dance salsa from anywhere in the world. You can be on your couch, in your kitchen in Fiji and learn to salsa dance. It is an incredible time to learn to dance.
So you have decided that you really want to learn to salsa dance. First you will have to find a teacher for private lessons or a group class. There are a few different benefits to both.Private classes are great for the real beginner. They help to build a stong, solid foundation. Privates enable you to go at your own pace and ask as many questions as you want. If you are shy at first, privates also help you to get your moves down and then feel more comfotable when you take group class.Group classes have few of their own benefits. Group salsa classes have a great social atmosphere. Everyone is there for a fun cause and it is a great place to meet new people with a common interest. Group classes are a great way to break out of your shell. They enable you to see what it is like dancing with many different kinds of people with different dance styles. This is the best way to prepare for hitting the salsa clubs.Try doing both group and private lessons. This will ensure that you will be dancing up a storm in no time. I am sure you are wondering how long it takes untill you feel like you can dance in the clubs. Well, that question is a loaded one. It depends entirely on the individual and how fast they pick it up.
When you hear great salsa music, it is almost impossible to keep your body from moving to the beat. Even non dancers find themselves tapping their feet and bobbing their heads. There is a passion in latin music that we just don't get in rock and roll, or hip hop, or country. It is in the clave, in the rhythm that hits something at our core and picks us off our feet.
Music and dancing has been a part of many different cultures for centuries. It is part of celebration and entertainment. And whether they knew it or not, way back when the dancing began, there are numerous amazing health benefits. Now that the American population is facing a major obesity epidemic, health benefits from dancing is something that should be taken a closer look at.
Dancing is all the craze right now. We have so many tv shows and contests on primetime television showing amazing dancers of all different styles, ethnicities, and body types. What do all of these dancers have in common?? Well, other than rythym, they have confiDANCE on the dance floor. They may not be the most confident people off the dance floor, but when they are in their element they command all the attention. There are a few key reasons why women have a weakness for men that dance.1. Confidence! confidence! confidence! A woman that sees a man dancing knows that he feels comfortable enough in his skin to express himself though movement.2. Most women love to dance. So naturally, women will like to share something they love with their partner. Dancing is something you can enjoy as a couple, whether it is going out to the club and freestylin it, or picking up a social partner dance.3. This is possibly the most important. If a man moves on the dance floor with rhythm, then that dancing movement will translate into other areas of how a man moves. This starts getting the chemicals and pharemones in a womans brain working. So the attraction just skyrockets from there.4. Women are romantic. We all want to be swept off our feet. When a guy takes a woman on the dancefloor, focuses all his attention on her and takes care of her, she immediately feels comfortable. Sometimes no conversation is needed. Need I say more.
Whether you are a beginning, intermediate, or advanced salsa dancer, there are certain tips and tools that will always come in handy when you want to dance at your best. It is one of the greatest things about salsa dancing. We are ALL ALWAYS learning, so that means that even the best dancers that you look up to will never know all there is to know about dancing. If we knew everything there was to know it would quite frankly get boring. Constantly challenging ourselves, as dancers, with new styles, moves and tricks is what keeps us dancing. So with that said there are certain importand tips that will never die. I have been dancing socially for about 10 years now. When I feel myself getting rusty, I revert back to the 'ol basics.
In the San Francisco Bay Area? Well, summer in San Francisco is one of the best times of year for the avid salsa dancer. The salsa skirts come out and the heat is turned on.The greatest thing about salsa in San Fran is the diversity of people that salsa dancing pulls together. So many different cultures and ethnicities are being joined through salsa dancing. It is one of the best ways to enlarge your social circle of friends.
I have been salsa dancing now for over 10 years. I have taken my breaks in between life's curve balls but I always come back. What is it that draws me back in? What is it that drives me to stay out late, get few hours of sleep, and dance with partners who are less than pleasant? It is for that feeling that every salsa dancer, who has been doing it for a good period of time, looks for. It is that moment when everything else falls away, to reveal two people connecting on a deep, awake, and very present level.Through out the years, months and days we are concentrating on so many things. To be completely in the present is almost impossible to do.There is a moment when two people are dancing to the rhythm of the music, when they are able to let go and let their essence seep out of their pores and flow through them. This is that moment that we search for, the 'Ultimate High'. It is like being in love. It is open, expressive and vulnerable. Without judgment, and youthfully passionate.
There are so many choices in music today. With cultures crossing more than ever, and the US being the ultimate melting pot that it is, it is no wonder that Latin music is hitting an all time high. It is not easy hitting the charts with Latin music though. Critics are tough and you have to be able to cross cultural boundaries now more than ever to be heard and kept. These top 5 latin music bands and artists have proven they have a sound worth hearing and rhythms guaranteed to lift you off your seat.
