pretty shitty how baseline human activities like singing, dancing and making art got turned into skills instead of being seen as behaviors
so now it’s like ‘the point of doing them is to get good at them’ and not ‘this is a thing humans do, the way birds sing and bees make hives’.
I know I’ve posted this before, but it bears repeating.
This is a thing humans do; you don’t have to be good at it to enjoy it.

Episode 7
Fruits basket anime- Motoko Minagawa
Now that I think about it, I don’t understand why the anime actually adapted Motoko Minagawa’s story arc but not Kakeru Manabe and his girlfriend’s connection to Tohru’s life I felt what the girlfriend said showed way more about Yuki and Tohru’s growth cause the girl really talked about how no one should be comparing people’s suffering. I don’t know. Just a random thought because I liked Kakeru more than the Prince Yuki fanclub lol
I love this so much. Sometimes I feel sorry for people who are so desperate to make a name for themselves or to leave behind some sort of legacy. As if that is the only type of life worth living and deserves respect. It is all well and wonderful that people today can express themselves in so many ways, but what about people that lead "monotonous" lives and are happy to do so? Are they wrong for that? Do their lives mean less because they lived a humble life? No. I think there is a lot to learn from people like that. Ego is an extremely delicate thing and is a front runner for most problems we run into living on this planet.

Two Yuki and Kyo scenes removed from the anime series
I know they had to discard scenes in the anime due to episode limitation, but I seriously wish they showed these scenes that occurred after Yuki and Kyo had their last fight because it truly showed the true personality of Yuki-- Yuki the jerk 😂😂😂😂

but consuming trash does not help my brain, and it makes this void even bigger. gotta start watching and reading things to enjoy it, to review it, and critique it. consume things that have some sort of purpose at least.

Look dude/dudette. I grew up with Fruits Basket. I was in high school when I first started watching the original anime; the manga finished around that time as well. It was/is one of my favorite works of fiction to date. It’s because it is my favorite, that I keep going back to it and analyzing it more than I should. I connected to this series on a personal level, but there were some parts I didn’t connect to at all. Though I dismissed it/ was oblivious to most of the things as I originally engulfed it, as I dissect things at this age, I no longer can. I am a full-blown adult who works with middle school kids, and therefore, I don’t accept it even more.
Yes, I am able to separate fiction from reality. However, Fruits Basket is special to me; I am allowed to acknowledge its flaws, and I will never be comfortable with Kyoko’s romantic life.

Biggest flaw of Fruits Basket
*spoiler* i feel the same way about katsuya and kyoko. takaya does a brilliant job at depicting abuse, and then she goes around to give us a couple created by the abuse of power. this manga had been so healing for me during some parts of my life, but I cannot imagine how triggering it must be for people who were sexually abused as kids.
It is so messed up because there is even a panel where kyoko asks katsuya if he’s a pedo/”lolicon”. I just did’t get it. the age gap was horrendous (even more because she was a MIDDLE SCHOOLER and he was 20 years old man) and this wasn’t even written 100 years ago or 50 years!!!! granted, it worked out for them as they were reasonable parent butttt it still irks me.
(Reading anything after this sentence will be spoilers for those who have not read the manga!) I wrote this in my Fruits basket review, but did anyone else realize how Yuki was the butt of all gender jokes in the series? Of course, you did! But the joke goes even further than that– there were moments in the manga where I would get confused between Yuki and Akito; and once I finished reading the entire manga, I couldn’t help but feel that those jokes about Yuki being a female was Takaya’s way of hinting at Akito’s gender especially in these two specific scenes! Or maybe it was just a coincidence, and Takaya did not plan any of this. Didn’t Ritsu also dress up as a female? Source of manga imagse: TokyoPop Translation. Volume 3(15/16) and Volume 19 (113) respectively.
I’m reblogging this because the second season finished, and I still can’t help but think Yuki Sohma’s gender identity was used to foreshadow Akito’s story.

Fruits Basket: Zodiac Curse in relation to family
By now, we all know that the curse of the zodiac is the “bond” that they have with “God”. None of the zodiac member are able to run away from Akito or even disrespect this being. There are moments when they try to be resistant and leave, but at the end of the day, they come back. They stay silent. They continuously get abused. They don’t blame Akito. I think this bond and curse can be compared to a toxic family relationship. We don’t choose our family. We are born into a family; and throughout our life, our attachment style and how we reciprocate feelings and emotions are connected to that family unit. There are moments we give excuses to some of our toxic family. There are moments we seek validation from those exact people. There are moments when the thoughts and pressure inside our heads that come from them makes us feel as if we are drowning in the middle of the sea. There are moments we even cut that bond with a sharp knife but then somehow it fixes itself. That is the curse. That is the bond
I kinda expected it, but it’s still sad we didn’t get to see Tohru’s class teasing her about going on a date (while she tries to hide visiting Kazuma) and Kyo being an idiot about it ;3

OMG!!! What Kyo said felt slightly out of place for me because this scene was missing!! No wonder I didn’t feel heartbroken when Tohru started to cry after Kyo gave her his whole support at the end of that episode. Although I truly think Kyo believed in Tohru when she said she was not going on a date, this moment opened the door for him to accept that someone else might end up with her and that he will support her no matter what because he loves her.
okay i’ll be real i don’t understand people calling kyo a “bad boy” when he is one of the most straight-laced, high-strung characters in fruits basket. like bad boy is not his vibe at all. he studies and is good at school, loves his dad, loves his gf, cries about stepping on a flower, cats love him, he’s scared of drugs and alcohol, scared of a bear that shigure made up, scared of women, scared of being a pervert, he’s a super virgin, he doesn’t dress cool at ALL. he’s just a fuckign nerd. if i saw him in real life i’d shove him in a locker

Tohru and Kyo or Kyo and Kagura
So, I just caught up with the anime and after watching episode 24, a lot of things make more sense to me. (This is spoilers for those who did not read manga). First, the lines that Tohru said solidified the reason Kyo and her ended up together. Tohru was kind to all people, but she felt as if she was a burden as well. She knew her friends and close ones loved her; HOWEVER, none of them actually gave her the space to talk about her own feelings, and so, she bottled every emotion inside her heart. How can I say that everyone loved her but didn’t give her a safe space to talk about her feelings? Well, some people need verbal consent before they feel that they can open up. We all know Tohru apologized for everything she did, and she was very fragile; so, Kyo actually telling her that she could open up to him was something that she always needed- Permission. Don’t get me wrong, Yuki is my number one. If I hadn’t seen spoilers before reading the manga, I would have thought he ended up with Tohru because he had so many interactions with her at the very beginning of the story. However, Yuki never truly opened up. Moreover, he NEVER told Tohru that she could open up to him. In fact, he was so wrapped up in his own problem, he didn’t even realize that those small moments where Tohru felt uneasy or was upset (Kyo on the other hand never intentionally opened up to Tohru, but people/life forced it out of him lol). As for Kagura, I remember that the manga stated that her love came from pity. This reason made sense, but I did not really understand it until now. In episode 24, while Kyo is having a flashback of his mother, he talked about how he did not want that forced love. His mom was afraid of him but convinced herself that she loved all of him because that is what a mother does. He knew that she never acknowledged the real him, but tried to force that type of “fake” love onto him. .....this, my friend....this was exactly what Kagura did! Her personality was very forceful! She shoved her love onto him, and he was not able to handle it because it felt fake to him. There was even a moment Kagura mentioned that she even loved his true form. In Kyo’s eyes, it might have seemed like she was forcing herself to love that part of him.
