The Naboo Archives: Handmaidens
a series of posts that explores the queens, handmaidens, and more
The Royal Handmaidens who served Queen Amidala; what became of them?
It is customary that, at the end of the Queen's term, her handmaidens are released from her service. Most queens, unlike Amidala, did not continue to another posting where handmaidens and decoys were required. Even then, Amidala did not take any of her original handmaidens to Coruscant with her when she assumed the position of Senator of Naboo within the Galactic Republic.
So what became of her original handmaidens? Let's find out.
Saché
(born: Sashah Adova)
While Padmé was on Tatooine during the invasion of Naboo by the Separatists, Saché stayed behind and worked with the Resistance to transport messages until she was caught by droids and tortured for information on the Queen's mission and whereabouts. She remained completely loyal throughout the heinous ordeal, and refused to give up any information.
Because of this loyalty, the resistance fighters on Naboo, as well as the Queen's life, were spared
Saché, after Padmé's terms were up, decided to run for a seat in the planetary Legislative Assembly, and won by unanimous vote because her loyalty to her people and planet was well renowned
Saché went on to become an influential member of both Réillata's and Jamillia's governments
Yané
(born; Suyan Higin)
Yané worked as a weaver and volunteered with orphans before she was recruited as a handmaiden, and went back to her passion for children afterwards
Yané opened up an orphanage with Saché's help, and helped raise hundreds of children, as well as displaced refugees
Saché and Yané eventually became a couple after their service to Padmé was up, and Saché often helped Yané around the orphanage
Eirtaé
(born; Eirtama Ballory)
Eirtaé, ever the lover of science and art, went on to study her passions in Otoh Gunga
Eirtaé also worked the rest of her life helping to mend the relations between the humans and gungans on Naboo
She was particularly fascinated by Gungan art and culture, and eventually moved to become a permanent resident in one of their underwater cities and studied how their technology affected their art
Rabé
(born; Rabene Tonsort)
Rabé, a former criminal who was forging priceless paintings and selling them to unsuspecting off-worlders before she was caught, imprisoned, and subsequently recruited by Panaka, went on to study music at a prestigious academy in Theed
Rabé was also in charge of the Queen's makeup due to her artisic skill
She often spoke of music and art, so her fellow handmaidens were not surprised when she chose to follow this path
Because of her deal with Panaka, her criminal history was wiped clean and she established a career for herself under her new name
Sabé
(born; Tsabin)
Sabé was overcome with grief and confusion after Padmé's death
Unable to accept the Empire's account of what happened, she and Captain Tonra took on false identities and began to investigate
She broke into Padmé's old apartment and stole the security recordings just days after her death, believing the recordings would hold clues
She had to hide the recordings in a safe spot on Naboo when the Empire was hot on her tail, and joined the rebellion shortly after
There is currently an unfinished canon comic running that involves Sabé coming face to face with Vader sometime during the rebellion, where he mistakes her for Padmé and refuses to kill her upon discovering her true identity. This series is, however, still in progress!
bonus content; not one of the handmaidens ever changed their names back, even though they had every right to do so. this was done in honour of Padmé's legacy and their deep love for her and the sisterhood they shared
