I’ve always hated the “I’m leaving you/pushing you away for your own good” trope in BLs. Mainly because what they are trying to protect the other person from is some future feeling or abstract idea of them being hurt. The hurt they are potentially protecting them from is never equal to the hurt caused by their absence.

In Khemjira, for Khem it’s “I’m leaving you because I have a vengeful ghost that follows me around and wants me dead, who is ready and willing to use the people around me and does not care if they end up hurt or dead. That’s not even just a threat, we have a sample size of 3 people (Grandma Si, Thong, Ake)” Yeah, that’s a pretty valid reason in my book. Carry on, Khem.
