Jonathan Lethem: “My intent to skewer is practically nonexistent”

I’m very glad to have my first interview up at Salon today, where I talk to Jonathan Lethem about his excellent new story collection, Lucky Alan. We talk about ordering collections, about the relationship between short stories already written and novels still to come, about influence and a life lived in bookstores, and about Lethem’s great affection for his characters. As he says: “In fact, my intent to skewer is practically nonexistent. If I could make just one general statement here it would be that I am almost always already never skewering anything when I set out to write. One of the sad-strangest things I experience is when I’m taken for skewering characters I adore and cherish, identify with, and am abiding with out of fascination and yearning.”

I’ve thought about this Pikachu a lot this morning. Pokémon Center’s monthly plush release for the mascot dresses him up as a newly hired, career-track company employee. He has important notes and the company handbook in that felt briefcase, tools to help him get acclimated to his new role.

(He’s resonated with a lot of you, it seems. When I tweeted his photo this morning, Lady_Saydee lamented, “This Pikachu looks like he got life figured out more than I do.” Please, don’t let this get you down like that. Instead, just think, if Pikachu can find direction in his life, so can you. We’re all rooting for you.)

The question I keep wanting to ask out loud, though, as if I’ve met up with him for drinks after his first day at the new job, is “Why did they do this to you?”

Because I can’t help sharing a new system dressed up to look like an old console, I had to rush over here and post this decal set (thanks to NintenDaan and NintendoTweet for the heads up.). EpicPalDesigns is selling these vinyl decals for $14.09 through Etsy, though you’ll pay extra for shipping from Spain.

And please note that the Super Nintendo (PAL edition) decals only work with the New 3DS and not the New 3DS XL, the only option for the step-up portable we have in North America right now. EpicPalDesigns does intend to make XL versions eventually, though. For now, somewhere, an eagle is crying.
