"So I have been told!" With a flick of his wrist, a servant pours them both wine. "Your company is most desired, I assure you. In India, the art of what you do is far more appreciated than it is here --- which is such a shame."

Tamara forced herself not to roll her eyes. She was never one to swoon over flattery.  She does not like to be called “Beautiful.’’  She knew she was. She had only to look in the mirror to see the jet black hair, fair skin, and striking features of her mother. The statuesque height,  blue  eyes, and confidence she’d gotten from her father.

‘’I was  about to go for a riding,’’ The duchess said, lifting her face to look at him, ‘’You may join me, if you wish.“she sweetly added, actually finding herself smiling to him.

"You ride then?" he asked, genuinely, but pleasantly surprised. "How wonderful. I would very much enjoy such an activity. Do you have a favorite horse or are you skilled enough to conquer whatever the stables may hold for us?"

“Am I? How sad.” She made no comment on her past, laced heavily by moments to be mourned. Dead parents were wept over heartily; the abandonment by those meant to care for her was fueled mostly by anger and fear; the children lost finally turned her numb.

Life was loss. Smiling, she snatched another card up. “Ah, if all were to have such freedom! But then, I might be out of a job.”

He laughed in response. "I truly doubt many would use the freedom only to spread their legs. You have such a poor opinion of your sex," he opined with a quirked brow before quickly moving to snatch up a pair of hearts. "I dare say most women I know... would leave their husbands."

“No, please don’t. I’m going to go insane if I’m forced to hide my smile in these hallways much longer.”

"No, no --- we must be very somber, your highness. I will promptly shame you for any display of happiness and you should do the same for me.

Quite honestly, I must say it is difficult to properly mourn when only servants and commoners have died."

‘’No, please,’’ The Duchess protested, ‘’It’s nice to see a happy face around here for once.’’

"Well, then! I would not want to disappoint such a beautiful woman," he replied charmingly, his smile widening. "May I inquire into what you find enjoyable? Perhaps I could join you?"

“Mourning is the best time for entertainment,” Anfisa confided over the edge of her playing cards. “Who would want to be left with all of those painful thoughts? Your turn, I believe.”

"I think you may be the only one with such thoughts, Anfisa," Samir replied, glancing at the cards on the table briefly before looking at the ones in his hand. "Perhaps it is the freedom of never worrying for one's reputation?" he inquired whimsically before placing a card down.

“I find myself exceedingly bored --- although it is a bit insensitive to think of one’s entertainment so soon, while so many are mourning. I will try to be more somber.”
