Have you ever thought about if that's why dean always gets with/tries to get with Sam's love instrests? Like he slept with his prom date, as soon as he saw jess he started to flirt with her, he was always interrupting Sarah and sam when they were talking, and everytime they needed to do a stake out dean is always the one who watches the girl. I always thought it was because he wanted to get with the girl, but now that I'm thinking..... maybe he doesn't want sam near anyone who could take sam away from him? Sam spends a lot of time asleep after Dean’s gone. He’s never been one to sleep in but he does now, more and more. It’s like all the times he dreamt of Dean dying, of Lucifer and the Cage, only to breathe in relief when he awoke–but in exact reverse. Now waking is the bad dream. In his sleep, Dean is still there. He dreams of his brother every night without fail. Simple things like conversations, sharing a beer, driving down the highway. It feels so real, only to be ripped away when he awakes. Sam almost wishes Dean would stop visiting his dreams, because it’s making him want to sleep and never wake up again–but he can’t bring himself to truly wish Dean away. In his dreams he can have the things that are gone forever. He can still hear the rumble of Dean’s laughter in his chest, feel the warmth of his touch and his smile. Hear his rough voice shaping his name, clear as day. Sammy. 

Over months and then years, the dreams become less and less frequent. They never stop completely. But they do change. Sam realizes with a painful lurch that Dean’s voice is growing less distinct, his presence less real. Often Sam doesn’t remember the details at all, but he can always tell when he was dreaming of Dean: when he wakes with a start and the uncanny feeling that his brother just left the room.
