I feel like I need to share this because idk if Europeans are familiar with the presence of Aldi in the US, but at least especially in my area theyâve been growing a lot recently. Like Aldi bought out some local failing grocery chains where I live (Louisiana) and have opened Aldis in all these somewhat rural communities and small towns, which for the record Iâm fine with
But as a result of this they are advertising a lot more in my area and also in many cases, the people in these areas have never been confronted with Aldi or any European grocery store. So the ads that Aldi is pushing out to its new US customer base feature a cowboy shopping at Aldi who is explaining to new Aldi customers how Aldi works. Like this cowboy is explaining you gotta put a quarter in the shopping cart and why there are very little name brands. A cowboy is how they want to reach their American customer base. They gave us a cowboy
Trader Joe's is fun: in Germany it's the brand for cheapo US-style fast food⊠and it's Aldi Nord (blue in the map). Aldi US is Aldi SĂŒd (other brother). It's basically a Treaty of Tordesillas, but including Europe and without any direct involvement of the Pope. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aldi#Internationally

'fun' fact about David Willis's dumbing of age: as of now you can search for "reply" to get the number of all comments not censor⊠Àh, ich meine: with official seal of approval. in principle "reply" can appear in comments or elsewhere on the site, but that search is fast and easy: 78 out of 88 thoughts on âTell herâ are allowed to be printed in the official newspaper of MolossâŠÂ Bulmer⊠the Glorious Republic of Joyce and Dorothy!
And the usual reminder: that is David Willis' website.
Sure, it is the new mod that probably has installed things like the "one way and that is up" đ button below every daily comic
and that has posted stuff under their name like:
""If youâre âpointing outâ that a character is an abuser/hypocrite/manipulator/narcissist/insert negative trait here, thatâs gonna get deleted. This isnât analysis, itâs just insults.""
""And, perhaps most importantlyâif your comment is a negative statement about David Willis, another commenter, another group of commenters, a minority or minoritized group, or myself, it is going to get deleted.""
⊠but it's still only Willis' website and business and they can fire the new mod at any moment. not that as of now i think that would help much. (edited to fix the !)
Sigh. Seufz. So, remember the new Dumbing of Age mod?
David Willis' new mod today: ""iâm really gonna need to ask you to connect this back to a broader critique of how the comic handles race, because âitâs okay to do the callout-post-style stuff the rules prohibit so long as you point out the characters youâre calling out have privilegeâ is not a precedent iâm comfortable setting""
That's a reply-reprimand to this comment on today's strip:
Shepsquared: "And here we see two white girls decide to invade the privacy of a black boy less than 24 hours after everyone here got raided by the cops, all because one of them cares more about being right than knocking. And thatâs without bringing up how Dorothy is right about how Joyce dumped Walky for her 48 hours ago and Joyce doesnât stop to consider if theyâre intruding on him." (Accurate description, rather calm; it leaves out e.g. that another dorm just got raided this day, which Joyce heard about two scenes before, and that Amber is a wanted criminal, having fled to Walky's room)
And then it gets worse... replies quoted in full below, but please don't take my word for it.
Keep in mind that this is David Willis' new mod/enforcer, which (both) can and like to delete comments (working with Willis' website that to this day only allows to purge whole threads).
Please don't go after the new mod personally - as far as I can tell they wanna do their best under the circumstances... ok, to put it frankly: they have their orders and constraints - understanding that is not at all the same as agreeing with someone's actions or decisions.
David Willis is the person mainly responsible for that website and has hired that new mod.
Thread starting there: https://web.archive.org/web/20260513054051/https://www.dumbingofage.com/comic/noactualplan/#comment-2002712
I quote some more in full, pasted from the archived version, leaving out time stamps etc. - the Web Archive holds the accurate record.
Dot, replying to new mod's reprimand: "How about this: we spent months of realtime focusing on how an unrelated white girl felt about her best friend slash crush getting together with someone else, which is handled with care and pathos, while the Black boy in the equation got laughed at to his face by the girl his girlfriend cheated on him with, and this goes completely unremarked upon as the obviously horrifically cruel thing it is. Does this not speak to a broader carelessness with which the stripâs people of color are treated narratively?"
New mod: ""if you want to make the case that joyce or the comic treats walky worse than becky because heâs black and becky is white, youâre certainly welcome to. but just stating two events in the comic happened, and you liked the execution on one and not the other, is not analysis.""
Dot: "Like, no actually, âthis plot point was poorly executed and hereâs whyâ IS analysis, actually."
New mod: ""the issue is there is no âhereâs whyâ. walky âgot laughed at to his face by the girl his girlfriend cheated on him with, and this goes completely unremarked upon as the obviously horrifically cruel thing it isâ is just a statement of fact.* [Footnote at end of comment with a counterexample]
for it to be analysis, you would need to do something besides say that it happened. you have to actually explain how it âspeak(s) to a broader carelessness with which the stripâs people of color are treated narratively.â.
like, okay. if i say âthis hamburger is expensive. doesnât this speak to a broader rise in the increase of hamburgers?â, for it to be analysis, iâd need to, i dunno, look at other hamburger prices from this same restaurant over time, or the prices of hamburgers at other restaurants, or the prices of other goods and services, or inflation, or something. a graph has more than one data point, and financial fluctuations have more factors than the price of a single hamburger..which is why, besides the sheer unrelenting repetition with which this strip gets âugh character x is being a bad personâ comments, thereâs a bar on just pointing out a character did a bad thing.""
And so on. Including character counts done by new mod, which new mod themself allows as evidence.
my general opinion on what people should be "allowed" to portray and what topics they should be "allowed" to explore in fiction is that you can make whatever art with whatever themes you want but i'm also allowed to think the way you handled it was tasteless and should've been done differently. my negative opinion on your handling of sensitive topics is the price of admission for publicly showcasing your work. this is not a pro-censorship stance because i am not The Government
Why Was Your Comment Deleted?
i quote that ... text in full (I hope I'm allowed to call it that, but then this post would get deleted as ""comorbid"" under several rules, so...). Added paragraph numbers; leaving out 2 links in the first paragraph to earlier ... 'sets of rules' in comment threads.
Archived version: https://web.archive.org/web/20260510044800/https://www.dumbingofage.com/2026/blog/why-was-your-comment-deleted/
""Posted on May 9, 2026 by [new mod name - I leave out their name on purpose]
[1] People have been asking for a post where I lay out what, exactly, might get a comment deleted. Having done two of these already and being met with hostility makes me a little wary, but I agree having this stuff buried in a comments section of a comic from days ago is bad practice, so here we go.
[2] If youâre just pointing out a character did something wrong, thatâs gonna get deleted. Note the word âjustâ thereâitâs okay to bring up someoneâs wrongdoing if thereâs a point besides the wrongdoing. Say, some analysis of their character or arc or something.
[3] In general if your comment is just âthis is a thing that happened, and thatâs badâ, it is getting deleted. Weâre reading the same comic you are and know what happened in it.
[4] If youâre âpointing outâ that a character is an abuser/hypocrite/manipulator/narcissist/insert negative trait here, thatâs gonna get deleted. This isnât analysis, itâs just insults.
[5] If youâre âpointing outâ that a character, were they a reasonable person like you, would hate another character for their misdeeds or want nothing to do with them, it is getting deleted.
[6] If youâre âpointing outâ that one character in a conflict is obviously and unambiguously correct, or that another character in a conflict is obviously and unambiguously wrong, that comment is getting deleted. (Apply this one in good faithâif your reaction to this is to troll by defending characters acting on obvious hatred and bigotry, like Mary or an evil dad or whatever, that is also getting deleted!)
[7] If your comment can be boiled down to âwhy isnât character a doing action x instead of action y?â, itâs gonna get deleted.
[8] A friend of mine has suggested a rule along the lines of âif you write a comment as a personal letter or DM to a fictional character, it is getting deleted.â Iâm not gonna enforce this one but if you find yourself doing this you might wanna double-check itâs not comorbid with the other rules.
[9] If your comment can be boiled down to âugh, more of thisââmore of this character, more of this arc, whateverâitâs gonna get deleted.
[10] And, perhaps most importantlyâif your comment is a negative statement about David Willis, another commenter, another group of commenters, a minority or minoritized group, or myself, it is going to get deleted.
[11] I do not have the time to individually address each individual deletion. To keep the comments from becoming about the comments, any comments asking for clarification or seeking to debate these rules will also be deleted. I understand the guesswork involved in figuring out why a comment was deleted is stressful for some commenters. Iâm sorry that I have no remedy for that at this time.
[12] I reserve the right to modify these rules at any time and for any reason. If and when that happens, a comment will be made under that dayâs comic.

Sam Vimes, my beloved.
Sam Vimes, who was an alcoholic but found a reason and a purpose.
Sam Vimes, who was drawn from the bottle to a crime.
Sam Vimes, who stood up and became a leader.
Sam Vimes, who failed and would have given himself to the Gonne, but was saved by a myth disguised as a man.
Sam Vimes, who realised he was wrong and risked it all to uphold the humanity of what everyone else saw as a piece of clay.
Sam Vimes, who chose to chase a criminal and in doing so stopped a war.
Sam Vimes, who died in that other reality.
Sam Vimes, who killed a werewolf with his bare hands to protect the woman he loved and the officers he was upholding,
Sam Vimes, who wanted to beat a torturer to death but saw himself staring across the room and across the years and had mercy.
Sam Vimes, who saw a murdered (goblin) girl and said "NO"
Sam Vimes, who knew "perks" were part of life, and comforted the girl who had killed her family unintentionally with them.
Sam Vimes, who saved the blacksmith who wanted to defeat him.
Sam Vimes, who showed me that even though I saw myself as a failure, as fallen - I could still change and make change.
To Sam, and to Terry - thank you.
