Works in progress, Anzu wyliei, an oviraptoroid dinosaur discovered in South Dakota. Both sketches are on watercolour paper, and will be inked and coloured. The top sketch is an adult, and the bottom sketch will depict three fledglings in a grassland habitat. The sketches are intended to go together as “Mother and young.”

This dinosaur, known as the  “Chicken from Hell”, likely roamed in a grassland-like habitat. Recent evidence of plant life in the mid to late Cretaceous suggests grasses existed at this time. Evidence for the emergence of the first flowering plants (the angiosperms) used to date only as far back as the late Cretaceous, but the date keeps being pushed back, and now it is thought that the first flowering plants emerged as early as the Triassic. How amazing!
