Winter Garden Pond by Ben + Sandra
Our creation in it’s first winter. These photos show the changes of the surround foliage and the pond plants.
So these pictures were taken after clearing a lot of leaves from the garden! Luckily we put a wire cover over the pond so it was easier to remove the leaves that had fallen.
With some of the leaves we thought we’d create a shelter for the creatures and frogs to either hide or hibernate through out the cold winter. So we dug a small hole and filled it with leaves and used dead plants from the garden and sticks to cover.
The plants in and around the pond have died back for winter and some weeds like ‘forget me not’ have overtaken. They will bloom very pretty, small light blue flowers in late spring!
Tips on creating a healthy wildlife pond:
There are things that can ruin your pond... Mosquitos larvae, algae, low oxygen, and nitrites in the water. Heres how to prevent them.
With insect larvae, which are an important part of pond habitats, we introduced water snails which eat the mosquito larvae and in no time they were gone.
To stop algae which thrives in sunlight, we learnt that shallow water with cobbles in full sun help microorganisms thrive that eat the algae. The different levels in the pond also act as a ramp for creatures to leave the pond and can be used as shelves for plants to be placed.
And for the water oxygen and overall quality we bought from Ebay a selection of aquatic plants each with different properties. In the pictures you can see the oxygenator ‘parrots feather’ has spread over the pond from one shoot!
So thats the wildlife pond after almost a year and we hope it will thrive along with the garden this year!!
Garden DIY Pond by Sandra + Ben
Continuation from my last post about Amigo the frog.
We had decided on a garden renovation because everything had become too overgrown and shut out all natural sunlight. Being cautious not to waste anything we cut down we used the branches to create a log wall. This has become a new little home for insects/Beatles/ worms etc. We did so by digging a 3 foot deep hole with a cup and shovel making sure it there was a shallow end for all insects to climb in and out of. We’d secured all lining and ensured all wall boundaries were stable. Whilst doing so the cats were intrigued and decided to explore our homemade log house and were pleasantly surprised to find a pool of water. Which they quickly put to good use in the humid heat.
Recycling old reclaimed slabs and bricks from our local area we used them to form the surrounding pathways and edges of the pond. Leaving us with the gravel, sand and stones the only materials we paid for. Plus, Ben’s profession is a gardener. So the majority of plants that we have used were gifted to him by clients who no longer wanted them. Therefore using these to fill any gaps. Plus, it added to the ambience of this secret little DIY garden.
So, meet Amigo. The beady eyed little frog that’s made our pond his home. Now all our greenery has become plush he’s got a lovely little home to hide from any intruders (foxes and cats). However, he’s not always in but will always pop back most nights. One thing we’ve noticed and loved is the fact that over the weeks it’s become a nice little home for all insects and animals. It’s peaceful and a place for them to call home. 🐸
