but that episode of Flash vs Arrow had such a dom/sub vibe, I literally need a moment.

Barry is so fucking eager to please??? Especially Oliver. He wants to please Oliver. He wants to make Oliver proud.

And Oliver is literally is trying to give Barry the tools to help him make Oliver proud. Also, he’s trying to make sure Barry is safe while he does world-saving instead of putting himself at unnecessary risk and relying on his advanced healing to get him through.

I’ll never forget the first time I saw “I, Mudd,” because this scene made me tear up a little.

Despite everything I already knew about these characters, I completely bought that Uhura was succumbing to temptation and turning on the crew—and that Kirk was going to shame her for it before coming up with another brilliant escape plan—because let’s be real, we’ve seen that happen a million times in a million shows, whether they broadcast in 1966 or yesterday. I was thinking, Damn, I thought this show was different, but here we are again. And I was feeling crestfallen, disappointed, but mostly exhausted, because it’s tiring to live in a world full of pop culture in which even the strongest female characters might at any moment betray everyone for a chance at youth and beauty.

And so the revelation that in fact she was saving Kirk’s life (and everyone else’s), meant so much to me—because not only is it another amazing Uhura power move, it also highlights the fact that her character didn’t happen by accident. Nichols, Roddenberry et al. knew what they were up against. They knew the stereotypes and sexism bought into by other pop culture (and audiences), and in this scene they actively played against those expectations to say, Not on this show, folks. 

I know TOS was far from perfect in the way it dealt with gender and race, but damn, I follow several television shows today that could learn something from this scene.

NASA just flew the New Horizons spacecraft by Pluto. PLUTO. 

We’re going to have HELLA pictures of Pluto very soon. P. L. U. T. O. Even more HELLA than the “teaser” picture right before the flyby:

LOOK AT THAT ADORABLE MOTHERFUCKER WITH A HEART ON IT AND EVERYTHING.

You know where that picture was taken from? 476,000 MILES AWAY (766,048 KILOMETERS) You know what the closest approach distance was for New Horizons? 7,800 MILES (12,600 KILOMETERS) FROM THE SURFACE OF PLUTO.

That’s right. That means YOU AINT EVEN SEEN SHIT YET, SON.

It took us over 9 years to get to our solar system buddy 31.9 AU away. 

Do you know how far away an AU is? 93 MILLION GODDAMN MILES or 149.6 MILLION HOLY SHIT KILOMETERS. Multiplied by over 30. With a (dwarf) planet flying around in some CATAWAMPAS ASS orbit.

WE JUST HIT A DAMN NEEDLE IN A HAYSTACK AS LARGE AS THE SOLAR SYSTEM.

Because of this distance, the New Horizons spacecraft will take 16 MONTHS to transfer all the data from the encounter back to Earth.

As IF New Horizons wasn’t cool enough, WE JUST RECEIVED WORD FROM THE SPACECRAFT that it is A-OKAY.

That means that the spacecraft sent us a message to say HEY EARTH SUP I PASSED PLUTO AND IT WAS AWESOME. And then that message traveled FOUR AND HALF HOURS through the vastness of our solar system to get to us. THAT ALL HAPPENED TODAY.

And the best part? New Horizons called home to the Mission Operations Manager. THAT’S RIGHT. It called home to MOM.

As long time readers will know, I’m obsessed with the (currently stalled) economic “miracle” in Brazil. In the last 30 years, Brazil hasn’t just halved the number of people living in poverty; they’ve also dramatically decreased income inequality (although it is still way too high). 

Obviously one doesn’t want to confuse correlation with causation*, but given that economists agree that income inequality leads to slower economic growth, this correlation probably isn’t coincidental. Meanwhile, in the U.S., our poverty rates are stagnant; income inequality just keeps growing; and almost all the benefits of economic growth are enjoyed by the richest 10% of Americans. 

* Also I am not an economist. I am just some guy who reads The Economist. If any of this is wrong, let me know and I’ll edit it.
